People were just having fun and giving their best fight! It was truly delightful. Here are the results of Mermaid s Tourney AS XXXVII: I look forward to seeing you all again. The dates for the next Mermaid s Tourney are July 4,5,6, Thank you all for helping us to uphold our vision of the dream! 5 The false isle runestone october A.S. xxxvij False Isle s busy summer. By Alicia le Willefulle Although False Isle s regular meetings were cancelled for the summer, many of its members continued to be active during the summer tourney season both here in the Shire and at outside events. Many won prizes and several awards received as well as new relationships forged. But as this newsletter has not been published for a while, I ve also included some earlier events of note. I have tried to include all the people who attended these events and honors they accrued but there has been so many I may have inadvertently missed someone, for which I hope they will accept my apologies. April 6-7 False Isle s Ithra was very successful with many people from inside and outside the shire attending and several of our members teaching classes. A marvelous feast was put on. Huzzah to all those who helped make this event a success! During court at the Ithra, a shire landmark occurred when Lord Grimon de Beaujolais became False Isle s first ever rapier cadet when Don Albert Faulke of Sanford tied a red scarf on Lord Grimon s arm. Grimon was given a well-deserved rapier salute from his students. Huzzah to Lord Grimon! April Ælfric the Lost journeyed to Lions Gate to attend their Spring Ithra and the Cardinal s Birthday Bash. April Lord Grimon, Stephen and Alicia traveled to Shittemwoode to attend Sir Edward s Memorial Tournament. Grimon and Alicia fought in both rapier tournaments. Stephen won a marshmallow crossbow for his efforts on the archery range; unfortunately it was because he tied for most challenged archer. April Lord Grimon, Lady Rhyannan, Lord Rory, Lady Sabine, Edward, Effie, Constance, Stephen, Alicia, Tita and Ambrosine all traveled to Hartwood for their Ithra where Rory and Sabine taught a well-received Introduction to Rapier class, and Edward taught about Courtly Love. May Sealion War was held in Lions Gate this year at the lovely Equestrian park in Chilliwack. Lord Grimon, Lady Rhyannan, Lord Rory, Lady Sabine, Stephen, Alicia, Ælfric, Hermannus and Tita all attended. May Lord Grimon and Lady Rhyannan attended May Crown in Stromgard where in addition to fighting in the rapier tourney, they accepted an Award of Arms for Constance de Montbard who was not in attendance herself. They later surprised her with it at a shire meeting and it was publicly presented to her at this year s Mermaid Tourney. June 5 (?) A very successful demo was held for two classes at Edgehill School who were taught a bit about life in a medieval castle such as clothing, food, etc. and medieval fighting as well as being entertained by dancers. Tita did an excellent job of organizing this event which was also attended by Lord Grimon, Alicia, Stephen, Ælfric, Constance, and Hermannus. June 7-9 Stephen and Alicia attended Seagirt s Newcomer s Event. Stephen and his partner, Tirso, won the duals archery competition. June Hartwood Birthday Bash was attended by Lord Rory, Lady Sabine, Stephen, and Alicia along with Lord Grimon s Don, Albert Faulke of Sandford. Lord Rory fought in both heavy and rapier tourneys while Sabine, Alicia and Don Albert fought in the rapier tourney. Both of these tourneys were Pas s a tourney where chivalry, honor and showmanship count as much as skill at arms. The winners were judged by Seagirt s Baroness Nadezdha Toronova and the ladies of the viewing stand. Each of the False Isle combatants earned a prize for some aspect of their fighting with Alicia being awarded the top rapier prize - a fighting dagger made and donated by our own Lord Rory. July 5-7 False Isle turned out in force for our own Mermaid Tourney autocratted by Lady Rhyannan. This was another very successful event which was attended by many visitors including a large number of rapier fighters from Washington (see separate article). Lady Constance received her Award of Arms from Baroness Amanda and Baron Gerhard during opening court. Hermannus authorized as a heavy fighter and fought in his first tournament. During closing court, False Isle joyously welcomed His Lordship Owyn of Clan Frog and Geoffrey of Mylar, two long time friends of False Isle who recently moved here from Lions Gate. July Lord Grimon, Lady Rhyannan, Stephen, Alicia and Eleanor all traveled to Shittemwoode (Washington) to attend July Coronation. Several notable events occurred during the weekend. Saturday was Alicia s birthday and she was surprised and honored by gifts, cake and birthday wishes. During Saturday s rapier tourney, Lady Rhyannan received a red cadet scarf (along with Aria Lyons from Seagirt) from Maestro Artimis de Montessori to become False Isle s second cadet. During Sunday s Closing Court, Alicia received her Award of Arms from newly crowned King Nikolaus and Queen Alyssia and Lord Grimon and Lady Rhyannan were awarded Goutte de Sangs in a double ceremony. July Lady Alicia and Stephen attended the War of Feast or Famine in Seagirt. July 31 - August 5 Several members of False Isle went to Clinton War. Aline, Gordon, Ælfric and Morgen all arrived early during work week with HL Grimon, HL Rhyannan, Lord Rory, Lady Sabine, Lady Constance, Continued page 7 5

The false isle runestone october A.S. xxxvij Thorvald, Lady Alicia, Stephen, Tita and Hermannus all arriving in time for the weekend. HL Grimon s Don, Albert Faulke came with them as Grimon and HL Rhyannan had been visiting him at his home in Madrone. Much fighting, shopping and socializing occurred during the weekend and several members taught or attended Ithra sessions. Lord Rory was called into court on Saturday and received a Goutte de Sang from the hands of Baron Gerhard and Baroness Amanda and later Don Diarmuid de Rosas asked Rory to become his cadet. August 9-10 Lady Alicia, Stephen and Ælfric (who had been travelling mundanely since Clinton) attended Lions Gate s SYG (Sargent, Yeoman and Gallant) Trials. August 11 Morgana from Lions Gate visited the False Isle Dance Troop s practice and taught some new dances. The dance troop was happy to see Grimon, Rory and Sabine join in as well having Rhyannan cheering on from the sidelines. August Maestro Artimis, Lady Tatiana and their two children visited False Isle on a (mostly) mundane camping trip. Maestro Artimis also conducted a rapier session during their visit and several of the shire enjoyed social visits with them. August Seagirt s Summer Tourney was attended by HL Grimon, HL Rhyannan, HL Rory, Lady Sabine, Stephen, Lady Alicia, Tita and Hermannus. False Isle made their presence known during several of the competitions. Although unable to win the Champion titles (which are awarded to the top Seagirtians), others can enter the competitions and win other prizes. HL Grimon won the Archery competition while in the A&S competitions; Lady Alicia won the Arts category and Lady Alicia and Tita tied for first in the Teaching categories. Huzzah to HL Grimon, Lady Alicia, and Tita for their skills! On Saturday, a ceremony was held in which Maestro Artimis took Lady Alicia as his apprentice and a short while later before the rapier competition Maestro Artimis took Lady Sabine as his third cadet. August 30-September 2 HL Grimon, HL Rhyannan, Stephen and Lady Alicia all attended September Crown in Bear Wood (Washington) which included four rapier tourneys; HL Grimon was in the semi-finals for two of these tourneys. Lady Alicia entered an embroidered bag in the Apprentice Display and received very favorable comments on her work. HL Grimon s birthday was celebrated at Crown and he received gifts and a cake. September 6-8 Lions Gates Stepdown was attended by HL Grimon, HL Rhyannan, HL Rory, Lady Sabine, Lady Saeunn, Hermannus and Tita. Several entered the rapier tournament which was reported to be a lot of fun though the eric was crowded. Tita won two prizes for teaching in the first ever Dance Tourney in spite of the pouring rain on Sunday. Hermannus also participated in the dance although not as a competitor. September Cragmere s Birthday Tourney was attended by HL Grimon, HL Rhyannan, HL Rory, Lady Sabine, Tita, and Hermannus. Grimon won the prize for best lover during the rapier tourney and now sports a lovely new red cloak. He also won the archery prize while Hermannus won a prize for chivalry on the field. Although Alicia, Stephen and Ælfric were unable to attend this event due to a family wedding in Calgary, they made the most of their trip with Ælfric and Stephen attending Lions Gate s dance practice and Alicia attending their rapier practice on the way to Calgary as well as Alicia attending Montengarde s rapier practice before they returned home. September 21 False Isle had a large display and demo at the Fall Fair, another success for Tita the Demo-crat! HL Rory s pavilion was set up and many people contributed to the Arts and Sciences displays as well as participating in heavy, rapier, boffer and dance demos. We had a lot of visitors to the encampment with several showing interest in our activities. Maestro Artimis and Lady Tatiana joined us from Seagirt as did Genevieve de Clairveaux (apprentice sister to Lady Alicia) and her lord Richard Touchet from Lionsdale. Our guests brought additional display items with them and Maestro Artimis and Richard both fought in the tourneys. Their presence was much appreciated and social time was enjoyed with them at Friday evening s Meet and Greet at the UHall, Saturday evening at a potluck for the demo participants at Rory and Sabine s and at the Sunday morning brunch at Hermannus and Tita s (huzzah for the culinary skills of Hermannus and Lord Grimon, and to Tita for letting us eat all that scrumptious food in front of her while she is dieting!). September 27 A Newcomer s Potluck was held at the UHall for those who wanted to find out more after the previous week s demo. The hall was crowded as several new people joined the regulars for the potluck which also included an A&S display. HL Rory talking to interested newcomers at the Newcomers Feast 7

october A.S. xxxv1j The false isle runestone Clinton war Greetings M'lord Chronicler: I send unto to you this account of this years Clinton event. Clinton was wet!! Clinton was cold! Our company rolled in at 2:00 am after a 20 hour day. Rory jumped out of the van in shorts and jumped right back in. Frost bite! The ale, warmed by the drive shaft, chilled within minutes. We set up Thorvalds tent with frozen fingers and the four of us climbed in... Aline de Bruges and Gordon Clinghan had valiantly staved off the rest of the Knowne Worlde (as they arrived in Clinton before the rest of us) and held tent land. I had filled Aline in prior to Clinton how very HOT it was up there and this might be the major source of discomfort--well it poured! The sun did grace us with it's presence for Saturday and some of Sunday and made War and Baroness Amandas last Walk possible. Sabine had had some trouble with translation from New World French to Olde World French over a certain word much to the continued merriment of all present. (I still owe those that were present "dinner" at the A and W). Tita washed feet and gave foot massages to the great comfort and refreshment of the fighters. We are forever in your debt. Hermannus decided to cut his war teeth with a little bash like Clinton. He received a beautiful token from Thorvald and Rory to commemorate the event and provoked alot of interest in his nether region when a certain part of his armour required attention. (Or so they say). Lord Grimon helps Hermannus with his armour Claude the truffle pig postured himself as a cavalier and might I say attracted much attention. He and HL Grimon did enjoy each others compagnie for some time. Truly, I am not addle pated! The garde-robes were incredible. They were beautifully decorated and featured brilliantly witty medieval graffiti. (Had to be seen to believed). Constance and Aline decided to go a-hunting Saturdays eve and captured a pirate. He annoyed them and so they threw him over board. Thus no plunder to finance the trip home. Sabine killed a pirate on the bridge and Alicia held her ground well against a gang of brigands! Rory was overwhelmed with attention and was awarded his Goutte de Sang (Huzzah!) thus making him His Lordship (HL) and was proposed to by Don Diarmuid de Rosa to be his cadet. (This was outside the tavern--now every damsel knows to stay away from relationships like that. Will he respect me in the morning?). Classes were enjoyable. The tavern and eateries were good. We felt that dragons should have been removed during the week-end and too many mundanes attended naked! The rapier war was also cut very short. Rory met a real vampire (with fangs and everything) in the parking lot! I could report much more as Clinton is always an event where many things do happen. I was fortunate and connected with some Olde Friends and as usual made some that are Newe. Those attending from False Isle were: HL Grimon and HL Rhyannan Stephen of Hunmanby and Lady Alicia Le Wilfulle Ælfric the Lost Tita the Wanderer and Hermannus Morgan Drachenfels Aline de Bruges and Gordon Clinghan Lady Constance de Montbard Thorvald Toothspitter This scribe and HL Rory * To Constance and Thorvald you are truly the best travelling companions in the Knowne Worlde and the best of gentles. In Service, Lady Sabine de Provence Deputy Mistress of Arts and Science Student False Isle Ecole D'Epee Cadet to Maestro Artemis de Montessori Shire of False Isle 8

The false isle runestone october A.S. xxxvij Lions gate baronial stepdown Greetings M'lord Chronicler Stephen of Hunmanby also knowne as He with Grace-Under-Fire I send to you some images of the StepDown ceremonies attended by some Denizens of False Isle. Good Gentles as Ye may realize our beloved Baron Gerhard and Baroness Amanda of Lionsgate have retired. The ceremony took place in Warner Loat Park this September past. Their Excellencies have contributed much to the growth and prosperity of this Shire and we owe them not only a debt of friendship but of continued support in all their endeavors. Taking their place is the most esteemed Devon and Aurora. The ceremonies were conducted most warmly and ably by Their Excellencies Devon and Groa, Crown Prince and Princess of the Principality of the North. Excellencies Amanda and Gerhardt did lift our hearts by joining hands and skipping down the aisle when released of their duties and were witnessed bestowing a loving embrace, one to the other, when the new Baron and Baroness were installed. Although as one might expect this affair had much solemnity and some sadness for ones who have contributed so much to the "dream". Those taking their place did so with great deference and respect. Excellencies Devon and Aurora have much to bring to the dream and were wholly regarded as a very good choice for Baron and Baroness of LionsGate. There was also much joculatiry and enjoyment. One event close to the Ladies Heart was the signing of a petition with some 150 names bidding Don Diarmuid to resume the wearing of tights. In fact he was gifted with a pair of most comely tights which he models in the enclosed image. The rapier tournament was most enjoyable and action packed and was won by Don Maestro Artemis de Montessori. The "Heavy" fighting tournament featured the Blind Samuri scenario which was hilarious. An Archery tournament was attended by False Isle denizens HL Grimon de Beaujolais and Lady Saeunne and friend Sharone of Burns-to-Be. It was a most enjoyable event and HL Owen did enjoy rekindling Olde Friendships. I join the populace of False Isle and send our warmest regards and best wishes to Their Excellencies Gerhard and Amanda in a long and joyous retirement together; and to Their Excellencies Devon and Aurora in fulfilling their new tasks as Baron and Baroness of Lions Gate. In Service, Lady Sabine de Provence Shire of False Isle Don Diarmuid de Rosa at Stepdown HL Owen of Clan Frog at Stepdown 9

october A.S. xxxv1j The false isle runestone "How I Spent My Summer Holidays" by Aline de Bruges & Gordon Clinghan Though our plans were much loftier, Gordon and I were able to attend only 2 events this summer: Mermaid and Clinton, before both of which we were rained out, and rained out again! However, the sun surely shone on the weekends of each event, and the Saturdays of each were a wondrous experience for both of us! Our first Mermaid was unforgettable, from the warmth and camaraderie of all of False Isle and her fair guests, to the excellent displays of archery, rapier and heavy fighting, dance, bardic song and story, moonlights and flaming arrows, to the final court held under the shelterng trees and the warm summer sun. Truly, a most medieval moment that lasted the entire weekend, despite Gordon's becoming so ill, and my escapades with the fire-pit ring(memories of which are still a little too real!). Clinton was everything we'd heard it might be, except hot! It was crowded! Indeed, on our arrival on Wednesday morning, we were initially unable to honour the promise made to locate space for all of the soon-to-arrive False Isle contingent. Many thanks to Aileen, the archer John Mcandrew's lady, without whose support, encouragement and help the False Isle Encampment would never have appeared! Once we were all settled into our new site, (with the help of Rory and Sabine, Thorvald, and especially, Alicia), we were able to stroll among the multitudes of merchants selling everything from hamburgers, to finely crafted jewellry, to both modest and ostentatious garb, swords, and even pavillions! Though neither Gordon nor I was prepared to fight at the Clinton War this year, we were awed by the clash of heavy fighting during the war, and inspired by the artistry of the rapier combat, both in the tourneys and in the streets! Gordon also enjoyed both the bardic circle and several dance events, while Lady Constance and I practiced other skills by the taking of prisoners, most notably (for one reason or another) the communications officer of the Ship Drakkar, whom we finally threw overboard when he serenaded his own "beauty" in song! Our return home was uneventful, yet it was infused with memories of our days at Clinton, new friends, and new goals to set our sights on. So inspired, we determined to attend at least one more event, but the return to the mundane world of school and work proved too onerous and we were unable to join with our False Isle friends in any more journeys. Here at home, I thoroughly enjoyed taking a very small part in my first Fall Fair demo, talking to people and displaying some garb, and in my first Newcomers' Feast (which I missed due to illness before!), which to my inexperienced eye appeared to have been exceptionally successful. Although not many newcomers attended, those who did were most interested and most interesting! And it was wonderful to have so many young people enjoying their own company, permitting the adults some time for talking andsharing! We all seemed reluctant to break up and leave. Gordon and I both look to the future with great pleasure and anticipation, joyful in having been offered the chance to "live" in a very different world! Many thanks to all for having made us feel so much a part of False Isle! SEWING SESSIONS with Aline 10 October OPEN SESSION 6:30-8:30 pm 17 October NO SESSION - parent/teacher interviews- 24 October SEWING FOR DUMMIES only 31 October NO SESSION - HALLOWEEN 7 November OPEN SESSION *hangings for Winterfeast? 14 November SEWING FOR DUMMIES only 21 November OPEN SESSION*hangings for Winterfeast ONLY 28 November SEWING FOR DUMMIES only There are no sessions through christmas holidays. There may not be sessions in early december except by special arrangement, as the school may not be available due to christmas concerts and special events. Any changes to this proposed schedule will be announced as soon as possible, and a tentative final schedule will be printed and distributed as soon as availability and dates have been confirmed. 10

The false isle runestone october A.S. xxxvij Summer memories By Tita the Wanderer In May, Hermann and I traveled to SeaLion War. Nothing of note happened there at least, not to us. J In June, several of us attended a demo for the Grade Five students at Edgehill School. The demo was extremely successful and fun, and the kids were wellbehaved and very interested in the material. My first experience as an autocrat/democrat. In July there was Mermaid. I led medieval dance (first time at a Mermaid? I don t know for sure) and my lord Hermann was carded and authorized as a heavy, and fought in his first tourney. I appeared in court for the first time, presenting tokens of identification to my False Isle Dance Troupe. In August we traveled with quite a group to Clinton War, taking the Shire Pavilion to serve as a communal kitchen and gathering place. This made the event a LOT more fun. I taught a medieval dance ithra there at the request of the Ithra Chancellor, and it was so well received that it was overbooked! Great fun. My lord Hermann fought in his first war and made his first kill! HL Rory and Thorvald presented him with a plaque to commemorate the occasion. Sciences competition with teaching the dance Tourdion. I won first prize (shared with Lady Alicia) in that category. My lord Hermann fought in the heavy tourney and managed to arm Baron Sir Liam among other excitements. Hermannus fighting at SST In September we went to the Baronial Stepdown event in Lions Gate. I competed in, and my lord Hermann participated in, a Dance Tourney. I entered as a dancer and a teacher, and won prizes for Most Entertaining and Best New Dance with the dance I taught, Peasbrawl. We were among the few participants/competitors who weren t from Lions Gate and I think we did False Isle proud. Hermannus in armour We also went to SST (Seagirt Summer Tourney), which was my favorite event of the season. I participated in a really enjoyable dance revel, as well as entering the Teaching component of the Arts and Dancing at Stepdown Then we went to Cragmere Birthday Bash. My lord again fought in the heavy tourney and won a prize for chivalry upon the field. I was most proud. Later that evening I led dance by torchlight, although the turnout was small. Lastly I was the co-autocrat of a very successful public demo at the Fall Fair. This demo was attended by over a hundred people, and has led to us welcoming a few newcomers to our feast table and weekly practices. The success of this demo would not have been possible without the participation and assistance of the entire Shire. 11
