2 Dear All, Hold onto your hats! Summer is here. It is fabulous to see those formerly shaggy ponies looking sleek and ready for action. A big thank you to all of our volunteers who are creating so many opportunities for our children this year. One volunteer who has committed hugely to the PC over the years is Sarah Curtis. Having supported the Vine in a variety of roles whilst her own children were members, Sarah now takes charge of some of the key health and safety tasks needed when we hold major events and shows. This year the Pony Club is recognising her sterling contribution with a Cubitt Award which she will receive on 2 June Congratulations Sarah! Following our May show at Park Farm, Oakley (thank you to Mr & Mrs Small for allowing us to use the Park Farm facility), our next big event is the One Day Event at Woodhouse Farm (by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Pusinelli) on Monday 1 September. This event has two levels (level 1 and level 2) which are open to PC members (see details on schedule due out shortly) and a special mini-mini level open to Vine members only. We hope that as many members as possible will take part in the event and, perhaps even more importantly, as many parents, grandparents, friends, instructors, members etc. etc. will help as volunteers. Last year we needed around 45 volunteers. Please contact Rachel Bladon at rachelbladon1@googl .com if you can help. If you have noticed that this edition of Hoofprint looks just a little different, it is because Kirstin Goodenough has kindly taken over its production and has used her professional skills to give it a subtle revamp. Looks great! Thank you Kirstin. We do love to celebrate the activities of our members and their lovely ponies in Hoofprint. Please do send in your photographs and, if relevant, a little commentary. Competition photos are great (and do keep sending them) but we also want pictures of you and your pony just having fun! Congratulations Congratulations to Sharon and Chris on the birth of Master William Quant who was born on Friday 21st February weighing in at a fighting weight of 9lbs 13oz. All are doing well and, as you can see (right), William has already decided where he should be spending most of his days and is looking forward to becoming the youngest member of the Vine Pony Club and our mascot at the Area Show Jumping competition in June. 2 Caroline The Vine One Day Event The Vine levels 1 & 2 ODE will take place this year on Monday 1 September 2014 at Woodhouse Farm, Ashford Hill (by kind permission of the Pusinelli family). PLEASE SAVE THE DATE IN YOUR DIARY! We have two new organisers Rachel Bladon and Jayne Aufiero. Thank you ladies! We have chosen the Monday to avoid clashes with Newbury Show, the Southern Novice Championships, the Southern Mini Championships etc. etc. The Schedule will be out shortly. We shall send it by and put it up on our branch website and the main Pony Club calendar. It would be great if you could encourage PC friends to come along as well. Running alongside the main events will be a special smaller event just for our Vine Mini members. We are keen to include our younger riders in the competition and this year will be a test to see how a mini-mini class goes. If it is a success, we may open this section of the event to members from other branches next year. Running the ODE on a Monday does mean that we may lose of our regular helpers (we hope not!) but we would love to gain lots of new helpers including our older members and friends, relatives etc. Could you please contact Rachel Bladon at rachelbladon1@googl .com to let her know if you can help either the day before to set up or on the day. Last year we needed 45 people to help so please do volunteer. If you have a young child riding and cannot help yourself, please see if you can provide someone else e.g. relative, friend etc.
3 Show Jumping Report We have had a great start to the 2014 Show Jumping. Bea Webber, Grace McFarlane and Izzy Ackroyd represented the Vine at the Goodwood Pony Club Show Jumping all the girls jumped clear and the team came 5th. Really well done fabulous result. Congratulations to Hattie Lees taking two 1st places at the New Forest Hunt Pony club show, with Lucy Harley 7th and Anouk Mauree 7th in their respective classes at the same show. To continue the success, well done to Gemma Raymond for her 4th place in the 90cm Open and Anouk for the winning the Dengie Winter League Qualifier & coming 2nd in 1m class at the Royal Artillery Pony club show. Anouk was joined in qualifying for the Dengie Area Final by Lauren Wall, Connie Burrell and Tatiane Mauree. The final was hosted by Goodwood pony club and held at Crofton Manor. The girls all jumped a tough 95cm course extremely well, with Anouk placed 7th. Georgie Vile qualified her new pony for the Blue Chip Affiliated Championships at Hartbury. She jumped some great clear rounds in the final coming 17th overall. Six Vine members made the trek to the Cricklands Winter League Finals at the David Broome Centre in Wales (Jessica and Katie Blatchford, Lottie and Elizabeth Hutton and Anouk and Tatiane Mauree). All the girls jumped some great clear rounds and there were rosettes all round. All the girls did well in the overall championship with Anouk coming joint 2nd on points in the 3 championship and awarded the Championship Bronze Medal. Anouk will also be representing the Vine at 1.05m in the Pony Club Area 9 Championships later in the summer. Rider Development Pathway The Pony Club s new initiative the Rider Development Pathway is a scheme set up to identify the most talented Pony Club members in the country and help them prepare for programmes offered by the British Equestrian Federation and provide a stepping stone for young riders working towards the talent pathways of the three Olympic disciplines. The Pathway is open to all Pony Club members aged years who meet certain competitive criteria in Dressage, Show-Jumping and Eventing. This year over 250 riders applied to take part at nine regional training and assessment days. As Olivia was able to meet the criteria for her age group she applied for Eventing. Her application was successful and she spent an interesting training day at Warwickshire College, working first on the flat in a large group of members whose age and level of competence varied enormously and then show-jumping somewhat strangely with a group of members who had applied specifically to show-jump. Cross-country riding was not assessed. About 40 Pony Club members attended the day in Warwickshire with only three riders (sadly Olivia was not selected as the Eventing member) invited to attend a national camp in Cheshire this summer. Looking ahead, from the Cheshire camp 6 riders will be selected as the 2014 Pony Club Rider Development 3 Squad one from each discipline plus a further three. Having spoken to one of the organisers of the scheme, I understand that plans for the roll out of the scheme were developed in haste as funding for the pathway was only finalised 2 months ago. I am sure changes will be made to the scheme for next year with the benefit of hindsight. The organisers certainly felt that talented riders had been missed who had been unable to meet the necessary competitive criteria. I think it is a case of watch this space. This is certainly an exciting development for the Pony Club and extremely popular amongst members but may need some fine tuning over the coming months. Katie Bartlett
4 Easter Egg Hunt: Preparing for egg throwing Minis The minis are starting to shake off the winter blues, even the waterproofs have been left at home on occasion. The ponies are all getting their summer coats and we are looking forward to a busy summer. Over the winter we were very lucky to be able to use the lovely new school at Plantation Farm owned by Richard and Kate Bandy. We held a few mini rallies there which were well attended and just kept everyone ticking over. In March spring turned up at the farm with the arrival of calves and lambs. Some of our Minis came along one Saturday morning to feed the pet lambs and twin orphan calves. We took the opportunity to do the Mini Farming Badge congratulations to Roddy Goodenough, Henry McDermott, Eleanor Ford, Elinor Hewitt, Ella Woolmer, Ella Mead and Isabella Thorne who all passed with flying colours. During the Easter holidays we were very lucky to be able to visit Oaksey House, the rehabilitation centre for injured jockeys and people who work in racing. It is a wonderful facility and they were very welcoming. The children were given a lesson in falling off (using the airtrack) and were also allowed to use the Equicisors. I can certainly see that pony racing could suit some of our members. One or two of the adults also had a little instruction on the airtrack learning to fall correctly what I learnt was that I am too old to fall off. I have been visiting the physio ever since! Our annual Easter Egg Hunt was held on a dry, warm Saturday morning. 20 minis and their ponies came along. We had a lovely group hack round the farm and back to the garden where the ponies were then put away whilst the children looked for pegs to trade for chocolate. We played some egg inspired games (using real eggs) and finally had hotdogs and cake. A good morning was had by all. Looking ahead to the summer months we are now holding fortnightly rallies at Zoe s on a Wednesday evening, we are planning a picnic hack round Sydmonton Wood and of course camp is fast approaching. Zoe and I hope to see all our minis over the coming weeks and especially look forward to welcoming our new members. Happy Riding! 5 Eventing HoofPrint The Vine eventing season got off to a good start on Sunday 25th April at the Bisley & Sandown Chase Pony Club. The Vine team of Tori McAlister, Gemma Raymond, Alice McGonnel and Anna Jones in the Level 3 won their class with Tori winning her section, Gemma and Alice both coming 2nd in their section and Anna 7th in her section. Miles Albert was also competing as an individual and he came 6th in his section. In the Level 2 class Jessica Blatchford came 7th. All of the Vine competitors enjoyed the event the course was beautiful with many of the fences in a wood surrounded by bluebells. Vine Survey Results Thank you to the 21 families who responded to the Vine Survey. Our very first attempt at a questionnaire the good news is that it all worked and we got some useful ideas both for mounted rallies and social events. For mounted rallies, jumping in its various forms (cross country, show jumping, general and grid work) are still the most popular with dressage in the mix as well. All things which we are currently offering. There is, however, a demand for all day rallies combined both with stable management and social activities and for a hack. Jenny Englefield and Brenda Sampson are putting together plans for a hack. Is there anyone who would be able to organise or help to organise an all day rally for the branch? In response to an interest in attending shows, Charlotte Piddington arranged for the branch to meet up on Cross Country Day at Badminton. We also have considerable enthusiasm being shown for eating pizzas and barbecues. In response to that I am looking for a volunteer to host a barbecue over the summer. Can you help? Caroline It is not every day that you find a National Champion in your midst! Nadine Gregory is a long standing instructor at the Vine Pony Club camp each year. This year she will be arriving at camp with a new title under her belt. On her beautiful gelding Candover Dramatico she won the Petplan Equine Area Festival Medium Restricted class at the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships with a margin of over 3%. An amazing achievement! Royal Windsor Congratulations to Emma Chamings who represented the Vine Pony Club and Area 13 at Royal Windsor Show. Not a winner this time but a strong performance and a wonderful experience! For our experienced show jumpers this is an event to watch out for. Each local branch puts forward up to two nominated riders into a ballot and around 8 riders from Area 13 get the chance to compete. It usually gets advertised around the branch at the beginning of the year so keep your eyes peeled! 5
