2 May/June 2016 Page 2 PRESIDENT S LETTER Jim Chillemi WSCC President Dear Members: It's a jungle out there; at least Tarzan thought so. Actually many would agree. It's a crowded market place and trying to find your niche and have your voice and message heard is nothing less than a challenge. As a Chamber member, you have already taken a significant step in propelling your organization forward separating yourself from the marketplace in which you do business. It shows a willingness to go the extra step, to differentiate your product and service from the fleet, by seeking an organization dedicated to enterprise and best business practices. If you were asked you could probably expound on another half dozen ways that you would be a better choice for your clients than your competitors. Price is always a great differentiator, but no one wants to be judged on price alone. There is nothing unique, creative, or inspiring about shaving a nickel and playing at the shallow end of the pool. It certainly won't feed the soul. It can also be terminal for yout company's health; there is always a faster gun and a lower price. If your competitor is charging less for a service that you offer, you can always take comfort in reminding yourself and your clients that is what it must be worth; simply less. I have taken the long way around the mountain to get to the point I am really trying to make. You are not doing this alone, no man/woman (PC) is an island unto themselves. Even if you are a one person outfit, you collaborate with others and need their support. You are not succeeding by your energies alone. As an illustration if you have a staff of four plus yourself, you only have 20% representation. If you don't get the other 80% on board and stroking in the same direction, your efforts are futile. If things are going well for you, give yourself a hand. If there problems, you are probably more than 20% of the problem, hardly seems fair but there you have it. So, how is this to be accomplished? The short answer is leadership. LEADERSHIP, it is such a huge word. We are not talking about you as the "leader" coming into the office 30 minutes early or staying late. It's not about saving an extra 1% somewhere in your supply chain (although that too is important). It is and has always been about creating a shared vision; from the dawn of time. Did you see Mel Gibson in Braveheart? Great sound track too! You must get your support staff (your team) to drink the Kool-Aid, get on the bus, buy in, see the vision, share the goal. This can be a daunting task as everyone's carrot is different. Some like it hot, some like it cold some like it just right. Illustration: The guy wants his donkey to perform in a certain way. He tells his companion that he must speak sweetly to the donkey. He immediately proceeds to hit the donkey in the head with a broom. The companion is confused by the act, the man replies, I speak sweetly but first I get his attention. Creating a shared vision is the most important job for the leader. Leadership is about taking people to a place they cannot get to on their own. Everyone wants a vehicle to their dreams, and they may not even know it. There is a leadership lesson I hope to share in the next President s letter. It is derived from the book "The Boys In The Boat" about nine Americans and their bid for gold in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It's inspiring, and who among us doesn't want to be inspired? After reading it you find yourself asking " could I do that" I would like to think the answer is yes.
