1 5572 PLANNING SESSION The Walker County Board of Education met in planning session on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. at the Advancing Education Center, 925 Osburn Road, Chickamauga, Georgia. Board members present were, Mr. Dale Wilson, Chairperson, Mr. Mike Carruth, Vice Chairperson, Ms. Phyllis Hunter, Ms. Karen Stoker, and Mr. Bobby McNabb. Mr. Damon Raines, Superintendent, was also present. Mr. Dale Wilson called the meeting to order and welcomed those present. Mr. Carruth gave the invocation. Special Needs Playground Equipment for Chattanooga Valley Elementary School: Mr. Wilson called for a motion from the Board to approve the proposal between the Walker County Board of Education and BYO Recreation, LLC for the purchase and installation of playground equipment in the amount of $22, The terms and provisions of this contract being agreed upon to, by and between the Walker County Board of Education and BYO Recreation, LLC, and the contract being fully executed by the Board and BYO Recreation, LLC. The purchase of special needs playground equipment is being funded with ESPLOST funds. Previously similar equipment has been purchased and installed at Rock Spring and Stone Creek Elementary Schools. Ms. Hunter made a motion to approve the recommendation, and Mr. Carruth seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
4 5575 ITEMS OF INFORMATION Facilities Update: Mr. Damon Raines, Superintendent, presented updates on the following facilities: 1. Chattanooga Valley Middle, Rossville Middle, and Saddle Ridge K-8 Greenhouses Site work and concrete pads have been constructed. The greenhouse structure is now being installed at Saddle Ridge K-8 School. The electrical is being run now at the greenhouse located at Chattanooga Valley Middle School. Due to a lack of available power and natural gas, propane will be used and a tank will be set for heat. The site work is now complete. The contractor is getting ready to pour concrete pad at Rossville Middle School. HVAC for Cherokee Ridge and Fairyland Elementary Schools Gyms The bid opening was held this afternoon. Once the bids are reviewed, a recommendation will be made for a contractor to perform the work. Roofing Projects Ridgeland High School Kitchen and Rock Spring Elementary School The roof on the Ridgeland High School kitchen is complete. The contractor is now in the process of setting up to re-roof the portion of Rock Spring Elementary School that was constructed in The start date for this project will be after testing is over. Bus Barn / Central Office Preliminary work and planning has started for the bus barn and Central Office. Southern A & E is working on estimates and preliminary plans now for both sites. Re-wiring of schools A Request for Proposal (RFP) is being finalized now to re-wire schools for low voltage equipment such as switches, access points, and camera systems. The process will begin with three schools at a time and continue to progress throughout the school system. Superintendent s Report: Mr. Damon Raines, Superintendent, presented information on the following items: 2. There will be a celebration at Rossville Elementary School in the afternoon on Wednesday, April 12, 2017, to celebrate the school s hard work and dedication and being removed from the State s focused list. Formative II and Summative conference s went out on April 10. Those will be done after student testing is completed. This will probably take two hours at each building. The Project Search Graduation will be held on May 12, 2017, at the Advancing Education Center. Kindergarten registration was held at the Advancing Education Center today and Mr. Raines thanked everyone for their hard work in registering one-hundred-forty-two new kindergartners. The 6 th Calvary Museum will be hosting a reception for Ridgeland High School Art students on Thursday, April 13, The students art depicts WWI propaganda posters. Mr. Raines invited all in attendance to drop by and attend. The art will be on exhibit until November. The West LaFayette Transformation Plan Committee met on Sunday, April 9, 2017, at Gilbert Elementary School, and then on Monday and Tuesday during the day at the Cherokee Regional Library, and to close things up, met on Tuesday evening, at Gilbert Elementary School. Information gathered, will be released at a later date.
5 5576 Review Tentative Agenda: Mr. Raines reviewed the tentative agenda items for Monday, April 18, Executive Session: Mr. Dale Wilson called for a motion to enter into executive session for the purpose of personnel and to consider a matter involving the disclosure of personally identifiable information from a student s educational records. Ms. Stoker made a motion to enter into executive session, and Ms. Hunter seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. 4. At the conclusion of executive session, Mr. McNabb made a motion to return to regular session. The motion was seconded by Mr. Carruth and approved unanimously. The Board considered a request from one high school student for the Board to waive the requirements of Board Policy IHF(6) and allow he/she to graduate early. The student is a senior and presented valid plans for post-secondary options or the workforce. Upon careful consideration of the request, the requirements of Board Policy IHF(6) will be waived and the requesting student will be permitted to graduate early, as requested. Personnel Recommendations: Mr. Dale Wilson called for a motion to approve the Personnel Report dated April 11, 2017, with Certificated Personnel. After a motion by Ms. Hunter and second by Ms. Stoker, the Personnel Report was approved with a 5-0. Mr. Carruth abstained from voting on Justin Carruth at Ridgeland High School, which recommendation passed Mr. Dale Wilson abstained from voting on Mary Wilson at Gilbert Elementary School, which was approved Adjourn: On a motion by Ms. Hunter and second by Mr. McNabb, the Board voted unanimously to adjourn.
