Warren Farnam, Rifle Coach-Modoc County. Front Row: Mavrick Farnam, Rifle-Modoc County The California 4-H sent their first ever Shooting Sports Team to compete at the National Championship in Grand Island, Nebraska in June. Modoc boasted three of the four members and the two coaches. Grady Ingraham and Paden Smith both of the Davis Creek 4-H Club were on the shotgun team and Mavrick Farnam of the New Pioneer 4-H Club shot rifle. The boys represented California great and did awesome for their first competition at this level. There are over 600,000 4-H members in Shooting Sports in the nation. Only 612 were honored with the opportunity to compete at the National Championship this year. California 4-H has never sent an official team to the competition. It was a great honor to have so many members from the team in our little county. All of the boys are great representatives of the 4-H organization and they did amazingly well in such a competitive The shotgun team placed 19 th overall in the nation in sporting clays, skeet and trap. Clayton Holmes of Amador County placed 21 st overall. Paden Smith placed 45 th overall and Grady Ingraham was 69 th. The boys were one of almost 250 competitors in shotgun. They placed in the top 20% for almost the entire competition. Mavrick Farnam shot rifle for the California team. He placed 21 st in the Nation overall for small bore rifle. Because he was the only rifle member, CA was not eligible for the team competition in rifle. Mavrick placed in the top 25% of the group of almost 80 shooters during the National Championship! The competition was fierce for both disciplines. The Shotgun team that won overall only missed 8 clays out of 900 the entire competition. The team learned a lot and are proud to have represented California 4-H in their first trip to the Championships! A big thank you to the Shotgun Coach, Ken Smith of Davis Creek and Rifle Coach, Warren Farnam of Alturas for all of their dedication and hard work to the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. The team would like to thank all of their sponsors and people who have supported them along the way. Huge thanks to their Gold Sponsors, the Milano Foundation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Vestra Resources, Inc., Modoc County Fish, Game & Recreation Commission, Desert Rose Casino, Sacramento Valley Shooting Center, US Sportsman s Alliance and Alturas Rifle & Pistol Club. Without them and many, many others this would not have been possible. Thank you for your continued support for the 4-H Shooting Sports program.

4 Modoc County 4-H attended the State Leadership Conference in Irvine, CA for the first time in years. This conference is open to HI 4-H and All-Star members or members who will serve as a delegate for our county. Five ELITE members represented Modoc in at UC Irvine in Irvine, CA for almost a week last month. Modoc County All-Star, Gonzalo Ramirez of Winema 4- H attended, as well as HI 4-H members, Kristy Sphar of New Pioneer, Haley Dancer of Davis Creek, Brady Deaton of New Pioneer and Seth Gibson of Providence. The theme was Bring your Fairytale to Life. To kick off the conference, Modoc attended a Day at Disneyland and California Adventure. The teens and families loved getting some extra time to just hang out and have fun. Friday was check-in and games to get to know eachother. Over H senior members attended the event. Grant Baldwin was the guest speaker Friday night and he gave a moving speech. He focuses on giving teens a reality check and with his quick wit and humor, he was enjoyed by all. After the speaker, there was a huge ice cream sundae bar and trading goods time. Each county provides something for the kids to trade with other kids in an effort to get them to mingle. Modoc sent packs of gum with leadership quotes on them. They were a huge hit and seemed to be the golden trade good of the conference. Saturday was filled with workshops and sessions. Heather Hadwick presented a workshop, Take it to the Limit! The attendees were able to get some ice breakers, club goal worksheets and other activities to use for officer trainings or planning committees. The ELITE members could choose from over 20 sessions in each workshop time. From film making, learning to DJ, robotics, leadership building to how to play Quidditch. The day was filled with fun and learning and then commenced with a BEACH party where food trucks met the group at the beach for dinner, the members could swim in the ocean, play beach volleyball and dance. Sunday was wrap up day, spent listening to guest speakers and presentations from the state ambassadors. The kids had a great time and can t wait to go again next year! SLC is in Humboldt next year, so get ready!!! A huge thank you to the Milano Family for their generous donation to get us to this conference! It was a GREAT experience and all of the attendees are so thankful to have gotten the opportunity to attend. Above: back row: Gonzalo Ramire, Brady Deaton and Seth Gibson.
