The Rosette Newsletter of the Tennessee Society Order of Confederate Rose ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Spring Edition ~ April 2013 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From the President s Desk A warm Tennessee Greeting to all my Southern Family! I think we re all ready for some warm weather! We ve had a busy winter, when weather permitted, and I expect we re all anxious to get back out and serve the Sunny South. First on the TNSOCR list is the state convention down in Ringgold, Georgia, this month. Folks my big short-coming is remembering all times listed are eastern time. I believe that with the exception of Wild Mountain Roses #11, all of our other chapters are in central time so be sure to turn your watches back when you head to Georgia. We need items for the ditty bags for those attending the general meeting, 25 is the current count, each lady should bring a teacup & saucer for the chapter drawing to create or add to their collections. And anyone who would like to donate an item or 2 for doorprizes we d be grateful. Nothing huge $5-$10 value. One of the officials at the museum & tunnel at Tunnel Hill has offered to give any of us a tour who can arrive early. Cost $3, tour time 2-?, I told him some of us need to be back at the convention center for our EC meeting and he said he could tailor the tour to our needs. Know about the Great Locomomtive Chase? Very simple to get to just get off I-75 exit for Ringgold/Tunnel Hill and head toward Tunnel Hill, once in that town, watch for the sign on left and turn in just a block and you re there! Hope to see ya ll in Ringgold, Vonda Dixon I had the honor of addressing the Wheeler-Long Camp in Dunlap and Cmdr. Charles Bowling (rt.) became a Life Member on the spot! Life member David Cole from the NB Forrest Camp, Chattanooga (left) is also a TNSOCR Life Member. Welcome to our only 2 Thorns for life! 1

Registration forms for the 2013 Tennessee Division Reunion and Tennessee Society Convention in Ringgold, Georgia, April as well as the National SCV and OCR Meetings in Vicksburg, Mississippi, July are all online at Roses of the Cumberlands #1, Crossville Carolyn Hedgecoth, Pres. Sponsored by Dillard-Camp #1828 We welcome Debbie Raymer and Janiece Hamblen, both of whom will be an asset to our chapter membership. We also wish to thank the Dillard-Judd SCV Camp #1828 for the February 18 unanimous vote in favor of sponsoring our chapter in order to bring us into compliance with new SCV guidelines. We hope to "do the camp proud" and look forward to working with the Highland Roses #14 which is also sponsored by Dillard- Judd. A chapter meeting was held at Ryan's on Feb10 Ruby Pruett and I attended the Lee-Jackson Banquet in Doyle on January 26. A bountiful meal, fellowship with other attendees, and the musical talents of Ross Moore were enjoyed by all. 3

Joe and Ruby Pruett, Leif and Betty Lu Bendeke, Frank and Helen Holladay attended the March 9 Abe Officer Memorial Service, hosted by the Champ Ferguson SCV Camp, where "Miss Ruby" was one of the speakers. Jerry and Carolyn Hedgecoth along with Frank and Helen Holladay attended the March 17 Cynthia Holford Officer #18 sponsored memorial service at Conley Cemetery for the Confederate Texans and Alabama boy that were massacred by Union troops on March 12, Mrs. Officer, who took a bullet to the shoulder during the horrific incident, was remembered as well. Helen Holladay recently donated three original oil paintings depicting scenes from the War Between the States era, and especially favoring the South, that were works of Dahl Blum, one of her long-time art students who is now deceased, to the Military Memorial Museum in Crossville. Stop by the museum at 20 S. Main St. to view these paintings if you're in the area. Janiece Hamblen and granddaughter at the Blue Gray Ball in Dickson in the last photo. Our chapter is in the process of collecting a contribution to the Citizens To Save Our Parks legal defense fund. I look forward to seeing everyone at the SCV/TNSOCR Reunion in Ringgold. Submitted by: Carolyn Hedgecoth, President 4

Mariam Beck Forrest #5, Weakley County Jan Hensley, Pres. - Sponsored by Col. Jeffrey Forrest Camp # 323 As the ad on TV says Life comes at you hard sometimes. A lot has been happening personally to our members since our last article but not in our chapter activities. Greg and Debra Joe Nail have bought a new house in Sharon. After a lot of muscle and back breaking work for renovations, they are in the process of moving now and enjoying their new home. Debbie Erickson s mother-in-law passed away. She and her husband had to move her belongs out of the retirement center and handle her estate. Elaine Neill has had severe sinus infections and stopped up ears. Some of our members have had good news to brag about. Terri Gordon s son has been accepted into Naval Flight School. Elaine s son and daughter are on the Dean s list at Liberty University. We welcome back Judy Wilson and her daughter Jessie Rudy into our chapter. They had to take a little hiatus from a lot of activities because Jessie had twins. We are so glad to have them back and look forward to helping raise some new little Confederates! We would like to invite anyone interested to come join us April 13 in Greenfield. A lady has a shop with looms and we are going to learn the techniques of braiding rugs. We are so glad that spring is here and we can get out and be active again. We are looking forward to seeing you at State Convention and all the upcoming events. Jane Simmons Davis #6, Murfreesboro Debria Beatey, Pres. Sponsored by Murfreesboro #33 Barbara & Bill attended At Thompson s Station Lee-Jackson luncheon in Eagleville the Blue-Gray Ball Mary Custis Lee Chapter #9, Memphis Margie Potts, Pres. Sponsored by R.E. Lee Camp #1640 We d like to invite everyone to events in Germantown on May 18 th and June 1 st. We also supported the Memphis Parks in the fight against renaming the Confederate parks there. More information to follow. 5

Aunt Polly Eaton Williams #10, Gainesboro Lisa Swann, Pres. Sponsored by Gainesboro Invincibles #1683 Mike, Lisa at the Lee-Jackson in Doyle, and Ms. Eleanor receiving certificate making her TN s oldest Rose at 96 ½! Vonda, guest Georgia, and Lisa at the Blue-Gray Ball in Dickson. Vonda and MacKenzie ~ Thompson Station ~ Vonda, Lisa Carolyn, Vonda placing Roses on the massacred Texan s graves. Welcome to new members: Glenda Solomon; Wendi, Tony, Reagan Worley; and Charles Bowling Wild Mountain Roses #11, Elizabethton Clara Ingram-Craft, Pres. Sponsored by Lt. Robert J. Tipton #2083 Hello Springtime? I sure hope so. We have seen so much snow, etc that I am about ready to move to a warmer climate. No gardens started yet and the Bradford Pears are just now starting to bloom. We are about 4 weeks behind on Spring. I have a feeling that Summer will get our attention soon enough. Chapter 11 has gotten off to a good start this year. First of all, we have 8 new members; yes 8. This is the largest membership we have ever had. We are growing and I hope the rest of the society is growing too. There will be new chapters coming along and all of us will be gaining new members. We have work to do and the more workers we have the easier the work is for all of us. On March 5, 2013 we hosted a dinner for the Lt Robert J Tipton Camp The camp lost it's meeting place due to closure. Adjutant (and OCR Thorn) Jeffrey Craft very graciously invited the camp to use his computer shop for the March meeting. Our new Entertainment Chairwoman, Pam Hicks and President Clara Ingram- Craft prepared a wonderful dinner of Venison Meat Loaf, brown beans, Italian potatoes, cole slaw, and cornbread with Georgia Cornbread Cake for dessert. The meal was enjoyed by all. (I guess everyone liked it since there was very little left). Pam Hicks does a wonderful job of planning for occasions. When it comes to food she is hard to beat. Thanks Pam. 6

On March 23, 2013 there was another Tennessee Confederate Flagging on Green Hill Cemetery in Elizabethton. OCR members Bill Hicks, Jackie Weaver Dennison, and Bill Dennison participated on a cool afternoon. Another flagging is planned for April 13, 2013 from 12pm to 4pm. Happy 39th wedding anniversary to Bill and Jackie Dennison on March 29, A great couple with super Confederate hearts. They live in Bristol, Virginia and Bill is an SCV member in Virginia but they are OCR members in Tennessee. Happy 1st wedding anniversary to Jeffrey and Clara-Ingram Craft on April 7, State convention is fast approaching and I am really looking forward to it. I haven't been able to attend the last 2 and I have missed seeing my OCR sisters and hope to meet some of the new ones. Take care and God bless each and every one of you. Clara Ingram-Craft President Highland Roses #14, Cookeville Pat Butler, Pres. Sponsored by Dillard-Judd #1828 Meet the new members next newsletter! Blanche Louise Lewis #16, Columbia Hazle Estes, Pres. Sponsored by Teena and fiancé Roger Godwin at the Blue-Gray Ball Praise Report Brenda Crosno has received a clean bill of health! 8 Cynthia Holford Officer #18, Livingston Betty Aronson, Pres. Sponsored by Gen. Geo. Dibbs Dibrell #875 We began 2013 by attending the Myers Zollicoffer SCV banquet, attended by myself and Betty Mullins, who was escorted by her son, Highland Brigade commander Michael Williams, and we shared the table with gentlemen from our sponsoring camp, Gen. G.G. Dibrell. Betty and Betty at M-Z Lee-jackson Members with Ross Moore and Cmdr. Savage at thehighland Brigade Lee-Jackson The camp asked us to act as hostesses for the Lee Jackson banquet later that month, attended by Louise Stover, Sue Pope, Carlotta Eland, Betty Mullins and myself, and we enjoyed the music of the always wonderful Ross Moore. In March, Betty Mullins, Larry Gunnels, and I were honored to attend one of two memorials that honored the Officer family and our namesake; on March 9, the Capt. Champ Ferguson SCV camp honored Uncle Abe Officer, the trusted slave of the Officer's who hid young John Officer in the attic on the day of the Officer house massacre, saving his life. On March 10, our chapter held a memorial at the Conley-Officer Cemetery to honor the 6 Confederate soldiers killed at the Officer house on March 14, 1864 as well as Cynthia Holford Officer, who was wounded. Sue Pope, Louise Stover, Betty Mullins, Carlotta Eland, and myself laid a wreath on Mrs. Officer's grave. Carlotta, Betty, Sue, Louise and Betty A. with chapter 18 wreath and Sue and Louise at Cynthia Officer s grave Finally, in remembrance of Confederate history month, Sue Pope, Larry gunnels and I presented a proclamation to Overton County Executive (and SCV member) Ron Cyrus for his signature and to be framed and hung in the County Annex. We've also added 2 new members this month: Teresa Penticuff and Karen Hensley. Welcome ladies! And we're ready for convention! Hope to see everyone there! God save the South!
