2 News of the World and Beyond The Interact Club at Healdsburg High School presented the 2012 Senior Prom on April 14 at Healdsburg High School and there was a whole lot of shaking going on. The event was open to all seniors in the community. The student members of the Interact Club raised money to hold the event and then arranged everything from live music to food and decorations. Rita and Steve Minkin, pictured at left, were named the King and Queen. The Interact Club is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Healdsburg Sunrise and the Rotary Club of Healdsburg. Prom King and Queen Reed and Sue Beaman have a new grandson born on Sue's birthday April 21, 9 lbs and named Jack Reed, parents, sister Vivian, and grandparents are excited. The Beamans also enjoyed the Panama Canal cruise with the group of friends Stoufers, Plasses, & Chomes in March. Melissa reports that it was a wonderful trip. The ship and food were great. They did lots of shopping at every port. They went snorkeling off Aruba and saw a sunken military ship. Melissa and Lou Ann sang in the Pop Choir and Lou Ann sang a solo in They are the Champions. The trip through the canal was on a beautiful day and they went through the locks alongside a tanker. The locks were very interesting. Melissa says if you haven t seen the Panama Canal, it should definitely be on your bucket list things to do before you kick the bucket. Jim & Joan Palmieri, Patty & Evan Griffith, Eric Hollowell and Di Ann Usher went on a square dance cruise with Jerry Story and Joe Saltel. Read Evan s account on the next two pages! The Greens, Harkeys, and Plasses are currently bowling in New Orleans. They re gone for 10 days so they must be doing more than bowling. Patty will tell us all about it next month. Senior Games Several of our members are participating in the local Senior Games. The Azevodos, Stoufers, Griffiths, Eric & Di Ann and possibly others will compete in the Square Dancing. Dick Harkey, Dave Green, Eric Hollowell, and John Stoufer will compete in Bocci. Melissa Stoufer will be an alternate and along with Di Ann Usher will be the cheering section. Later in this Newsletter see Steve Minkin s write-up on how the Senior Games work. Deadline for registration is May 1. Pete Richardson starts chemo on Monday, April 30 for pancreatic cancer. He and Gloria need your prayers. They thank everyone for all the cards, calls, and well wishes they ve received. Birthdays & Anniversaries Happy Birthday to Evan Griffith (May 6), Pete Richardson (May 16) and Jim Bossaller (May 23). Happy Anniversary to Louie & Nancy Azevedo (May 13) and Dave & Patty Green (May 14). 2
3 New Officers Well, we have one new officer, and one existing officer changed positions. We had elections at our April General Meeting. Dick Harkey moved from Vice President to President. Ron Plasse is the new Vice President. Loren Cooper and Melissa Stoufer will continue as Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Installation of officers will be after square dancing on a special Cake Night, May 3 rd. Other news from the General meeting: We decided to be dark on May 24 th. We ll start a new beginner class August 23rd. Christmas party will be on Sunday, December 9. Square Dancers AHOY!!! So when Jerry Story and Joe Saltel decide to give a cruise, what else can you do? Go with them. So the Newbies (Jim, Joan, Patty & Evan) chaperoned by Eric and Di Ann took off on their great adventure to Galveston. Really. Galveston. It s so famous Glenn Campbell wrote a song about it. By Evan Griffith The Newbies with their Chaperones Actually, that is where we met our ship. It was a pretty good indicator how much fun we were going to have when we could hear the girls howling with laughter from the bathroom. After settling into our staterooms, we explored the ship we were on, the Mariner of the Seas. Huge, beautiful, amazing. Pools, spas, miniature golf, ice rink, a five deck promenade, rock climbing wall, more pools, cafes, bars, more cafes, more bars, 3 huge formal dining rooms, a theater well, you get the idea. 3
4 We were joined by 200 other dancers from all over, but mostly Texas where Jerry and Joe are from. At night, we took over the pool decks and dosado d under the stars. Jerry and Joe put on quite a show and were joined by a top notch cuer. During the first two days, we played miniature golf, strolled around, ate, drank, ate some more. Laughed. Laughed some more. Ate some more, hit the bar again. Laughed a lot more. Then we danced. Our Waiter at the Rhapsody of the Sea Dining Room (He is not as surly as he looks. We just didn t go for his licking our plates before we ate. Other than that, he was a pretty good waiter). The first port of call was Roatan, where all three couples went on their various excursions. Jim and Joan took a sailing cruise with Captain Ron (Kurt Russell) complete with his first mate (wife) and crew member abandoning said Captain Ron to sail his boat with the help of the tourists!!!! Really. Jim looks good at the helm of the boat. Di Ann and Eric took off for the ruins, Patty for Secret Island and I blew bubbles underwater. A good time was had by all. At night, more dancing, more laughs and a libation or two. Next day, it was Belize. Jim and Joan took off for a jungle cruise, joined by a spider monkey. Di Ann and Eric took off and lost his wallet. Patty took off for another adventure. I blew more bubbles. Then dinner, dancing, still more laughs, more libations, desert and mid-night snacks. Next day, Cozumel. More excursions, buffet lines, snorkeling, dancing, laughter, libations, more laughs. Next day, we were back on the sea, Thank Goodness, headed for good old Galveston. We were all exhausted from laughing, eating, dancing and in general coming close to HAVING TOO MUCH FUN. NOTE TO READERS: Jerry and Joe are planning another adventure in TWO YEARS. Mark your calendars, please. 4

6 Senior Games By Steve Minkin Just a few days left to get in your registrations for our area's first Senior Games square dance events! So put together your bocce ball/ square dance team, or your golf/square dance team, or... well, you get the idea: registering for the games allows you to compete in all the events, including square dancing. The deadline for registration is May 1 st, although the games don't start until May 30 th We are patterning our event on the square dance competition that is a key part of the world's biggest senior games -- the Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah, where square dancing has been a fixture for more than a decade. Ours will be only the second square dance event at any senior games. The commissioner for the sport, Carolyn Maloney, is available to answer any questions you may have by phone at Profits from the event go to the Sonoma County Council on Aging. We will have a welcoming dance on Friday night, June 8. This dance will also be a chance for singles, couples and foursomes to find dancers to fill out their square for the Mainstream and Plus events. (Singles are encouraged to come with a partner, if they can, to make the process easier.) Saturday morning we will have a practice session, with the competition itself on Saturday afternoon. And Saturday night we will have the results, the presentation of awards and the closing dance. This year's categories will be Mainstream, Plus and Random Plus. Each square will be assigned two judges with stopwatches for each five minute segment, and the judges will time how long the square is broken down, starting their watches at the time of the breakdown and stopping them when the square has formed lines and is prepared to rejoin the action. The square with the lowest cumulative down-time wins. Each division's competition will consist of three five-minute tips, the first one easy, then medium, then hard. The general atmosphere and level will be more like a fun dance than a hot hash or take-no-prisoners tip. All dances will be held at the auditorium in Spring Lake Village in east Santa Rosa -- a spacious, well-lit, modern facility with a beautiful wooden dance floor. The cost to register for the senior games is $40. That covers your eligibility to try many sports as you would like to try, including golf, ping pong, bocce ball, running and pickle ball: There is a $5 fee for the square dancing competition, which is the same as most of the sports ($40 for golf). The $5 entitles you to compete in all three square dance divisions, dance Friday night, Saturday morning, afternoon and night, and you get a lunch at the hall. We encourage you put together your own square. The Huntsman Games has at least one pre-set square that has been repeat champions in their division for a number of years. You may also arrive as a foursome, a couple, or a single, and find a square to join or to create during the Friday Welcoming Dance. In the Random Plus category couples are randomly assigned to squares with three other couples, and that group of four couples then competes as a square. We encourage folks who are intrigued by this but can't or don't wish to compete to join us as judges. We'll need a bunch of them! We can offer you lunch, an invitation to dance with us at the closing party, and an opportunity to help shape a new (to this region) and exciting way to feature and to play with our dance. If you are interested in learning more, or in volunteering, please give Carolyn a call at , or Tom & Carolyn at maloneyville14@sbcglobal.net or me at steve@steveminkin.com And the web site for signing up for the competition is: 6
