2 President s Message Hello to all you "dancers and prancers"... Thanks to all of you that offered me your views on our pie night experiment. It looks like the early pie night trial was a one-night stand. I believe if everyone agrees, we will just keep it the way it always has been at 9 o'clock. I'd like to extend another thank you to all the people who helped make the garage sale so successful, and our hoedown such fun. Your efforts are a huge blessing to our club as well as to the organizations who will benefit from the proceeds. And one final thought... something that strikes me each week as we gather. The power of a simple smile... how it can offer a gift to ourselves as well as others. And each week we gather together to share our smiles. And with our smiles come friendship, mutual respect, and playfulness. What a wonderful, revitalizing experience to share among trusted friends! As we meet each week, I reflect on the pleasure of those moments... how special those moments are among all the moments of our life. Dance, play, and especially smiles, they are our weekly gifts to each other. I'm looking forward to seeing you and your smile soon... I've had three multi-generational family camps at Emandal my annual dance for 200 teenagers from San Francisco Chinatown my 35th year for the San Francisco Girls Chorus, a country club in Novato's day camp, my thirtieth year doing two high school camps at Westminster Woods and big Saturday night dances for Geyserville's Vineyard Club (33 years), an estate in Napa, and my annual dance for Fritz Maytag (20 years). And Rita and I are enjoying our Tuesday dances at the Healdsburg Plaza -- lots of great bands this year! Steve Note: Steve s links are live, just Ctrl and click

3 Circle n Squares Club News We are Going Back to our Regular Pie Night Time Well, thank you for trying the earlier time for our Pie Night, but from the feedback given to Steve and Jackie from members of the Club, most people prefer our old time frame at the end of the evening. So, for our August Pie Night August 24 we will return to our original time of 9:00 p.m. for Pie. The idea of making prep easier by pre-cutting pies is still a good one. If you could please bring your pies cut into small pieces (perhaps half the size of the usual slice of pie), this will save the committee time in set-up. Peggy would like to encourage everyone to dress in square dance clothes on Pie Nights just for old time sake, since we used to dress in square dance clothes every week. This is a nice once a month showing. Thank You! Circle n Squares Garage Sale To Benefit our Vietnam Veterans This fine looking group of people manned (and womaned ) our Club-sponsored Garage Sale on Saturday, August 5. Great response from Club members in providing things for the sale, which yielded $650 that will be added to our growing donation for the local Vietnam Vets Association. Submitted by: Roving Reporter Thanks go to Tom & Jan Woodard, Louie & Nancy Azevedo, Larry and Barbara Wofford, and Evan and Patty Griffiths. You folks are amazing! Thanks so much for giving up your Saturday to help the Club and our local Vietnam Vets. Tom asked that we pre-warn you that we will have another sale next year, so hang on to items that you come across over the months and plan to donate them to the Club s sale. Annual Circle n Squares Summer Picnic Time to Sign-up for the Picnic Our Annual Circle n Squares Picnic, will be held on Saturday, September 23, starting at 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon and running until we run out of steam. We are planning a 2 nd Annual Bocce Tournament, so exercise your bocce rolling arm and plan to have some fun on the bocce courts. Sign-up sheets for the picnic are on the counter at Monroe Hall during workshop on Thursday nights. See flyer at the end of the newsletter. 4 News from Around the World GO'N TO THE HOEDOWN!!!!!!! Reported by: (the dance partner, who wishes to remain anonymous for this report) Doris, well known square dancer, and former club president, finally convinced her dance partner, (who wishes to remain anonymous for this report), to go to Silver State because she wanted to dance to and see Joe Saltel. She discovered that Joe was coming to SONOMA COUNTY for the Circle n Squares Hoedown!! How great was this going to be?! So, preparations were made, outfits were chosen, leis were purchased at the party store, clothing matched up in the style of Hawaii, just for Joe. Doris, who lives by a calendar, got greatly excited that the coming Hoedown was going to be SO great with Joe Saltel! The day arrived, the excitement grew, and the time to dress up approached. A very busy day with lots of activities, culminating with THE Hoedown!!! She and her dance partner (who wishes to remain anonymous for this report) got their Hoedown clothes on and looked forward to an exciting evening of dancing. Onward to Monroe Hall. The excitement began to build... until she and her dance partner (who wishes to remain anonymous for this report) drove into the parking lot of Monroe... NOT ONE CAR IN THE PARKING LOT!!! NO, it couldn't be...yes, it was...the Hoedown was NEXT week!!!! The only question remaining, what do we do with all these deviled eggs? Ha ha ha ha ha ha Doris' Birthday Report But wait there s more For my birthday I wanted to go gold panning. Who wouldn't want to spend their birthday in beautiful downtown Oroville where it cools off to 104 degrees at sundown? In spite of the heat, we had a wonderful time and I learned something, too. I learned that I should never expect the locals to tell me where to go gold panning... What was I thinking? Even though it looked like gold was scattered on bed of the river (magnified by the water) we did not get any gold, but we did get what they call "color" and of course good memories. Western Sonoma County Historical Society s Cemetery Walk Submitted by: Elaine Von der Porten Western Sonoma County Historical Society hosts a cemetery walk in the old Sebastopol Cemetery, as their major fundraiser of the year. Six (6) residents of Sonoma County who are buried in the cemetery are featured and short vignettes are played out at each plot visited and a little is learned about the resident and his/her life. The Circle n Squares have had a group of people attend the walk for the last several years enjoying the evening and the time together. This year s scheduled time for our group is Friday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m. The evening includes a light dinner antipasto, salad, soup, and bread before the walk, and

5 ends with homemade apple crisp / pie that we enjoy in Burbank s cottage after the walk. The cost is $40 per person (again it is a fundraiser) and sign-ups are now being taken at workshop. Friends and family are welcome to join us, so please consider bringing someone new with you. If you are still interested in going (or just became interested in going), tickets can be purchased through Brown Paper Tickets The walk starts with dinner at the St. Stephen s Episcopal Church 500 Robinson Road, Sebastopol Harvest Hoedown in Yuba City October 27, 28, 29 Submitted by: Dale Reitz Attention Club members who have RV s. I am trying to recruit club members who have an RV to join us at the Harvest Hoedown in Yuba City on October 27, 28, and 29. Last year we had two (2) RV s there and it provided a fun gathering place during meal breaks. If we can get a larger number of RVs going, then we can get a bigger / better spot to park. The spots are all on grass and have water and electricity. If you are interested, please let me know. The callers this year at Harvest Hoedown are: Ray Brendzy, from Canada Bobby Poyner, from Illinois Charlie Robertson, from California Matt Worley, from Virginia The Harvest Hoedown is held at the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds, 442 Franklin Avenue, Yuba City, CA Tropical Night with Joe Saltel Our August hoedown with Joe Saltel was great, as usual. Joe came prepared dressed in his tropical shirt, and with lots of songs with an island flair. And, his mama was along, as always, keeping us all on our toes. We didn t have quite as many squares as we normally have, but everyone really seemed to enjoy the evening and Joe was spot-on with his calling. Lots of folks were dressed in tropical clothing and fitting in with our theme. Little Gizmo (the unofficial mascot for the Club) wanted to get into the spirit too, so put on his lei and wowed (bow-wowed) his girlfriends (and he has lots of those girlfriends). Coffee was awarded to the Redwood Rainbows for having the most dancers, outside of the Circle n Squares at the hoedown. Thanks to all for attending and making it such a great evening. Sundae Sunday with Joe Saltel Submitted by: Nancy Azevedo Not getting enough of Joe Saltel on Saturday, The Albertsons, Azevedos, Weavers and Doug travelled to Ukiah for Sundae Sunday! We had the privilege of dancing to Joe again, along with Lawrence Johnstone, in the air conditioned Senior Center and had the opportunity to make our own Sundae and enjoy home baked chocolate chip cookies. We also got the opportunity to visit with Willie and Jenny McGinn long time members who are in the process of moving to Texas to be near grandchildren. A great afternoon, hopefully more of us can attend next year...

6 Mission Trip to Tanzania Submitted by: Chris and Ed Baker In July we had the privilege and joy of participating in a mission trip to Tanzania. The 17 day trip was organized by our son, Mike, lead pastor at Crosspoint Community Church, and Pastor Forrest Haskins from First Baptist Church in Windsor. Forrest and his wife, Purity, were missionaries to the Datooga people group in Tanzania for a number of years. They are currently living in Sonoma County because Forrest s family needs their help. Our team consisted of 16 adults, some from Crosspoint and some from First Baptist plus Purity s sister from Kenya, and 4 children, our two grandchildren (7 and 4 years old) and Forrest and Purity s two children (10 and 6 years old). We went to help in the village of Moheda-Gew where Forrest and Purity had lived and worked. After flying into Arusha, Tanzania, near Mount Kilimanjaro, our team drove three hours on a paved road and then another three hours on a dirt road to reach Moheda-Gew. Moheda-Gew is nothing like what we would picture as a village. It is a collection of widely separated stick and mud dwellings with no commercial area. You can t see one dwelling from another, and there is only one tiny hut that has a few things for sale. The area is dry desert and virtually every plant has thorns on it. Before We had four main projects while we were there. One was to make some major improvements to the school office/teachers' lounge. This is a government run school, and there are only three teachers for the 101 students. First we removed the existing windows, many of which had broken panes, and replaced them with new window frames and new glass and a metal design protective barrier. Now no critters will be able to get into the room. We also replaced the dirt and concrete floor with a new tile one. And lastly we painted the room, but not until after we had put mortar and gypsum on the walls to make a smooth surface for the paint. After Our second project was to do exactly the same things to the church building--new windows with a protective metal barrier where there were only openings in the walls before, replace the floor and tile over it, and smooth out the walls so we could paint. 7 Our third project was a Vacation Bible School type program in the school. While the students were not on any kind of a vacation when we were there, we were allowed to work with them in the morning in place of their regular schooling. It was optional for the students to attend our Vacation Bible School, but almost all 101 students were there all five days. Can you imagine what chaos would occur with close to 100 students in a relatively small classroom here? Not there. The kids were extremely well behaved. They loved singing songs with us, listening to the stories we told them, doing the craft projects we had for them including coloring pictures we brought with us. They had never colored before. They also really enjoyed the games we played with them: jump rope, soccer and other ball games, throwing Frisbees, playing with a parachute, shombay (tag) which Chris played with many of the kids much of the play time, and many other games. We had so much fun! Our final big project was to try to repair their water reservoir. Moheda-Gew and the surrounding area are very dry desert land. While the village is near the southeast side of Lake Eyasi, the lake is salt water, twice as salty as the ocean. The reservoir has not functioned for about 3 years, which means that the people have to walk for miles and miles every day just to get water, something we take for granted. We had hoped to make some repairs that would have given them about 1/4 to 1/3 of the capacity they had before, but that did not work out. It s a long story, but the final outcome was that our team ended up hiring a contractor who is supposed to be restoring the reservoir to its full capacity. He began work on the reservoir this week. If all goes as planned, the reservoir will fill during the rainy season (there are no creeks or rivers in the area) and last for a good portion of the year. The people will still have to walk to get water, but not nearly as far. The Datooga people couldn t have been more welcoming and hospitable. They helped with the work at the reservoir, the school, and the church. They invited us to their homes, came to visit us at Forrest and Purity s house, where we were staying, and never passed us on a footpath without a greeting and a handshake. The village chief even gave all the men and the two boys in our group their own bilangidas (slender wooden poles, cut from trees in the distant hills, then shaped and straightened). You can t be a Datooga man without one. They use them to herd their cattle and goats and to deal with scorpions and thorn bushes. They lean on them and gesture with them when they talk. Bilangidas have many other uses. The men carry them everywhere.

8 It was very hard to leave when our time there was up. Our hearts will always be with the Datooga people, and we are very thankful we had this time to spend with them. 9 Circle n Squares Summer BBQ / Potluck and Bocce Ball Tournament Saturday, September 23, :00 until??? Be sure you have marked your calendar and reserved Saturday, September 23, for the Circle n Squares Annual BBQ / Picnic and Bocce Ball Tournament. Last year s Bocce winners will be looking to repeat their performance and take on all challengers, so keep doing your arm exercises, back-spin ball throws, and beer or wine drinking. You want to be ready!! If you are not a Bocce player, not to worry there are other things to keep you occupied? Or, you might play for the first time and be our new champion Beginner s Luck, you know!! The sign-up sheet is out on the counter at Monroe Hall during workshops, so take a minute and sign-up to bring an appetizer, salad, side dish, or dessert. The Club will provide the meat for BBQ, but if you are not a meat eater, you might bring some sort of main dish rather than a side dish. The BBQ will be held at the Harkey s House 5711 Marsh Hawk Drive, Santa Rosa (707) , if you need directions. See you there!!

10 On the Mend Dawn Reitz It was great to see Dawn back out on the dance floor, both at workshop and at the Joe Saltel Hoedown. Nice recovery from her surgery and she is out there dancing again. Dale Reitz Now that Dawn is up and ready to dance again, Dale is down with Plantar Fasciitis and is wearing a medical boot for support while he heals from this nasty condition. Anne Johnson Also great to see Anne out at workshop on Thursday. She too has been battling issues with her feet, but she is almost back to dancing fitness, so we hope to see her back out on the dance floor very soon. Mary Desideri while Mary isn t sick, she doesn t get out to dance with us too often any more. But at 96 years old, most of us won t be out on the dance floor much either. Mary was out to help in the background the other night and to just have a chance to visit with friends. Great to see you out at Club, Mary!! Dick Harkey missed workshop and our hoedown this past week as he too was suffering from a round of battle with Plantar Fasciitis brought on by too much work in the yard, climbing the hills and standing on ladders to get work completed. Nancy Azevedo keeps pushing back against the various things that are trying to keep her down. While Nancy is still suffering from the affects of Shingles, she is not letting that slow her down. She is out on the dance floor, working committees, and handling most of the communication for our Club. Awesome!
