Many thanks from Merrill Gardens in Rohnert Park as they were thankful to have some entertainment during their Western Days. The folks at the Gardens seemed to really enjoy the dancing (though they could see our bloomers). Dancers got to meet Jan s dad, who lives at the Gardens, and was out enjoying the afternoon s entertainment. Thank you s go to the Griffiths, Greens, Jan Eckert, Dick Harkey and the Azevedos who gave up a few hours on a Saturday afternoon and were treated to a delicious barbecue lunch... The Griffiths, Azevedos. Splaines, Eric and DiAnn, Eckerts, all attended the Harvest Hoedown in Yuba City...Outside of having some sore feet, we all enjoyed dancing to: Randy Doughterty, Charlie Robertson, and Dan Nordbye. Many couples from other Santa Rosa clubs also joined us. We had a good time making new friends and renewing friendships of long ago! We all agreed we are looking forward to the next one... It was great to see Sandy and Loren Stammer join us on the dance floor last week. Nice to have them with us again! Mary Ann Harkey was honored (along with Tom Sawyer) at this year s Relay for Life. Both Mary Ann and Tom are cancer survivors and participated in the Survivors Lap that starts the walk each year. This is an event sponsored by the American Cancer Society with the phrase Celebrating More Birthdays. We might consider putting together a Circle n Squares Team for next year s relay. It is a lot of fun and could be a great way to advertise our next Beginners Class. We ll have to check the timing on that. Congratulations, Mary Ann!! 2
Upcoming Events Halloween Party It is tonight, October 27. Be sure to wear a costume and compete in the costume contest. Bring finger food. Dessert will be provided. Thanksgiving Potluck Thursday, November 17th, please sign up! It will begin at 6:15pm. No need to bring your own table service just bring your appetite and a dish to share. There will be a sign up list at Monroe Hall. The hall is dark for Thanksgiving Christmas Party MARK YOUR CALENDARS! The Christmas Party is scheduled for Sunday, December 11 at Wedgewood Banquet Center, Foxtail Golf Club, Rohnert Park. Committee Volunteers Tom and Jan Woodard, Dick and Mary Ann Harkey, and Dave and Patty Green have met and started the planning for our Christmas Party. If you have any ideas or special things that you would like to see incorporated into the Christmas Party, please contact one of the members of the Christmas Party Committee. We want this party to be fun for everyone!! Invitations will be sent out soon and tickets will be available in early November. Pancake Breakfast for Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure Just a reminder that this Saturday morning, October 29 at Monroe Hall there will be a Pancake Breakfast as a fundraiser for Patty Green s participation in the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk. Each walker MUST raise a minimum of $2300 to participate in The Walk, so fundraising is critical. Patty takes care of her own transportation and lodging for the event, so all monies raised go directly to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Breakfast will include pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, coffee, tea, and juice, all for just $8.00 for adults and $3.00 for children under 12. Breakfast will start at 7:00 a.m. and be available until 11:00 a.m. There will also be a raffle for some great prizes, and information about breast cancer. Please plan to join us as Patty prepares to walk in her 9 th 3-Day Walk 60 miles over 3 days this year in Dallas, Texas. Birthdays & Anniversaries Happy Birthday to Louis Azevedo (Nov 3), Nancy Azevedo (Nov 10), Loren Cooper (Nov 22), Mary Ann Harkey (Nov 30) and Carole Bossaller (Dec 22). 4 Singles & Pairs Fall Hoedown on Nov 5th By Marty Patton Volz Mike Wright is joining us from the east bay to call the squares and Bob Ensten will be cuing. Something a little different - Mike's going to do a dance styling workshop interspersed with the pre-rounds from 7-8. He's going to provide dancers with tricks & tips on how to make our dancing look smoother and stylish. We are also hosting a canned food collection to support the local food bank - everyone is encouraged to bring one or more cans of food - let's see how much we can collect!! Schedule - Styling workshop & Pre-rounds: 7-8 pm Squares & Rounds (with an advanced star tip) 8-10:30 Advanced Squares - 10:30-11pm. Saucy Squares/Redwood Rainbows Lots happening in Sebastopol! By Kathryn Jurik Last week's Board elections brought Tia Watts, Lucy Whitworth and Brenda Pagliari to the board. Many thanks to outgoing Board members Fred Loehr, Michael Wills and Monte Mentry. This weekend...friday through Sunday...there's a big fundraiser at Wischemann Hall to raise money for ADA improvements to the hall. Fundraising has been progressing and the Board has contracted to have the bathrooms completed within a few months! Complete news about the weekend and a history of the hall is at wischemannhall.com/2011/10/01/celebration. There will be square dancing on Saturday night with Steve Minkin...actually it will be SCARE dancing, as it is our traditional costumes welcome Halloween Dance. Spooky treats are being brewed up and there will be raffle tickets with the grand prize being a handmade quilt by local artist and square dancer, Judith Lerner. The silent auction and raffle will be open all weekend...so even if you can't come to dance, come buy some raffle tickets or make a bid on one of the fabulous auction items. I hear there will be fresh pies being baked in the kitchen and sold hot!!! Sunday, Ken Ritucci will be calling squares in the afternoon, complete details at times at There are many other fun things happening all weekend at the hall, we hope you will drop by! December 19, eleven new Plus Level dancers will graduate with the usual unusual Redwood Rainbows ceremony...complete with kazoo pomp and circumstance and special public finals. New classes begin on Monday nights in January. wischemannhall.com/2011/10/01/celebration 4

Back Row: Goofy Middle Rows: Rich, Liz, Bill, Bobbie, Patty, Dave, John, Melissa, Jo Anne, DiAnn, Mary Ann, Dick, Sue, Reed, Lou Ann, Ron Front Row: Minnie, Mickey As you couldn t possibly have missed, the first week of October, twenty Circle N Squares members (all shown above and previous page, except Pete and Gloria) plus two other couples traveled to Florida to see Walt Disney World. Patty and Dave Green (along with Dick and Mary Ann) arranged for four timeshares, a 3-bedroom and three 2-bedroom units. We were all on one floor and next-door or across the hall from each other, so it was easy to socialize from room to room, but I don t think many of us spent much time in our rooms. There were better places to be. Here are the reactions from some who attended: Nancy Azevedo: Many thanks to Patty and Dave Green for organizing our recent trip to Disney World. Arriving at 12:05 AM we were sure to enjoy 7 full days in a wonderful world of fun! We enjoyed Epcot along with Disneyworld. Thank you Patty for your suggestions on how to see everything...i would say after 7 days we almost covered it! Melissa & John Stoufer: Our trip to WDW was great, the thing that surprised me the most was how big it is, Disneyland times ten and all the shows and rides are fantastic! Pete & Gloria Richardson: Pete experienced WDW from the back end of a wheelchair as Gloria's foot was too sore to walk, however they were able to go first to all rides, shows, etc. And it certainly didn't stop Pete from the excellent beer tasting! 6
Lou Ann Plasse: Ron and I had an absolutely wonderful time at Disney World, although the week went much too fast. We also went to Universal Studios which was also great, the Harry Potter ride was fantastic!! We could not have asked for better weather. The slides at Blizzard Beach were lots of fun, I particularly liked the big raft that several of us were able to get in and go down together. It was wonderful spending the week with friends, although, unfortunately, we did not see as much of everyone as we would have liked. There was so much to do that we were all scattered among all the parks. Thank you Patty and Dave for putting this together!!!! Jo Anne Schlegel: Thanks to Patty and Dave for all the work they did to initiate and organize this wonderful trip. I was overwhelmed by how big WDW is. It has four very different amusement parks, about seven resort hotels, two water parks, and Downtown Disney with even more shopping opportunities and nighttime entertainment. Three resorts are kind of near Magic Kingdom, three near Hollywood Studios, and Wilderness Lodge near the campground (made to resemble the Yellowstone Lodge). Animal Kingdom has its own Lodge and timeshare units. There is so much open space between each of the parks and hotels that walking from one to another is not an option. You take the Monorail or a boat or a bus. Then, you can t count the number of ways that Disney entertains you, from roller coasters to flight simulators, to 3-D movies with smell vision and feel vision, to interactive exhibits, to free Coca Cola from around the world, to parades and Disney characters posing for pictures. Every night there were fireworks and light shows at every park (except Animal Kingdom). Cinderella s Castle was used to project images on like a movie screen. EPCOT was a world onto itself! We seemed to go there for part of every day. Each country had its own area, some with rides or 360 degree movies, others with shops and restaurants. All had buildings typical of their countries. This is nothing like Disneyland! I m so glad I went! Patty Green: I am really happy that so many of you were able to go along to Disney World it really is one of my favorite places to vacation. Jo Anne captured so much of it in her notes it is really overwhelming to first-time visitors and it IS IMPOSSIBLE to see all of it in one week, so hitting the highlights is a must. We visited the Wilderness Lodge, which is made to look like a large Yellowstone Lodge, enjoying a drink down by Bay Lake before going inside for an 7
entertaining dinner at the Whispering Pines Café. All the men in our group were invited to participate in singing for the guests I m a Little Teapot and they did an outstanding job. We were all 24 together just one night for dinner and to see the Fantasmic Show, but otherwise broke into groups of 4-10 moving through the Parks. Sometimes we actually just ran into one another in a Park what are the odds of that? H This picture is the full group, at the end of a long day, having just finished watching the Fantasmic Show. Even though everyone was tired, the group still looks pretty good, doesn t it? Watch out for Gloria and her light stick she can be wicked!! Traveling with the group was a lot of fun. Not traveling as a group was fun the freedom of everyone to do what they wanted and move through the parks at their own pace made it work well. We ll have to consider other trips as a group and see what we can come up with for the future. Disneyland has a new Cars Land opening next year!! For those of you who left early on Friday or Saturday and didn t get to venture out in the rain that waited until our last day to arrive you missed another Disney adventure. I think Jo Anne and DiAnn were genuinely surprised to see how many people were in the parks in the rain. The rain was warm and really comfortable, so folks just put on their rain jackets (I call them duck outfits ) and keep on going. Here is a picture of our group of ducklings Check out all the people passing behind us in the picture. The rain didn t slow them down at all. 8
DIDN T GET ENOUGH HOW ABOUT A TRIP TO DISNEYLAND WITH A 3 ½ Year Old!! Nope, some of us just can t get enough of a good thing, so 4 days after we got home from Disney World, we went down to Disneyland for 4 days with our son, daughter, and granddaughter. This was our granddaughters first trip to Disneyland, as she is only 3 ½ years old. Emerald was soooo cute and really enjoyed her visit to Disneyland, to meet the Princesses, and to see Mickey and Minnie, up close and personal. Our first evening in the Park was Mickey s Halloween Party, so we all went in costume to enjoy the festivities. Within the first hour Emerald had seen her first Disney Parade, and a few hours later saw the Halloween Parade with all its lights and characters dressed up for Halloween. It just kept getting better!! A few hours of Grandma and Grandpa s time was spent in line to see the Princesses, the fairies of Pixie Hollow, Mickey and Minnie in their Halloween costumes, to play to get on the Toy Story Mania ride and play that awesome game, and so much more. The lines, though long, moved along fairly well and we were able to spend one-on-one time with different characters throughout the Park. That is an outstanding deal for getting pictures of your kids and grandkids without having to fight off others in your pictures. So, we got to enjoy Disney Parks from all perspectives with a mature group of folks ranging in age from 59 to 78, many of whom were first time Disney World visitors and then with a little girl, enjoying her FIRST visit to Disneyland. Both experiences were great, but there really isn t anything that compares to being Grandma Patty and getting chosen to go on the rides with your granddaughter. Too cool!! 9
