President s Message Merry Christmas to all of you and your families! Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family this past week! As we go through our Christmas season, let s not forget those who are less fortunate. Tom Woodard is still collecting coats and blankets for the homeless through Catholic Charities and Steve Ruesel can always use a helping hand with men s underwear and socks for his Friday Morning Catholic Charities clothing exchange. Please don t forget to purchase your Christmas Party tickets; we are going to have a BLAST with our dancing community! With that said, if anyone would like to donate a wrapped gift for our Mystery Raffle Baskets, please see Patty Green or myself. And, with all the holiday hustle and bustle, let s not forget to participate in our Workshops on Thursdays, because we still have Beginners who need our help! I, along with my husband Bruce, would like to wish each and everyone of you a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!! Hugs, Margie Caller s Corner Change of plans for Rita and I -- we're moving up our vacation plans from the spring to the beginning of the year, taking off for Buenos Aires to do the Tango and see the city, then we leave for a two week cruise around Cape Horn (the Falklands, penguins, glaciers...) and up the Pacific to Santiago, Chile. It's a Princess Cruise, so we'll get to dance every night! My brother and my son are bringing girlfriends to Thanksgiving, so it will be bigger than we first thought. Steve Circle n Squares Club News Circle n Squares Annual Christmas Party on a Thursday this year! It is almost time for our Annual Christmas Party, which has proven to be a lot of fun for us for many years. This year we will be holding our party on a Thursday night Thursday, December 13. The price for our event center and dinner went up quite a bit this year and by choosing a Thursday night, we were able to keep our pricing at the same level we have enjoyed for the last several years, which is $32.00 per person. The Club helps with a subsidy and helps keep the price as low as possible. We have sold about 50 tickets so far, but we have room for more, so if you haven t gotten your tickets yet, please do so this Thursday, November 29. Our final count is due before we meet again in December.
Circle n Squares Annual Christmas Party Thursday, December 13, :00 10:00 p.m. at the Fairview Banquet Center (formerly Wedgewood Banquet Center) at the Foxtail Golf Club 100 Golf Course Drive, Rohnert Park, CA Since our party is on a Thursday night, we hope that EVERYONE will be able to attend it is our regular dance night, so you should already have the Circle n Squares on your calendar. We will just enjoy our party and then come back to dancing the following week. Looking forward to the party and being able to spend some non-dance time with our new dancers. Should be fun!! 2018 Donation to the Local Vietnam Vets Organization Submitted by: Tom Woodard In November, to coincide with Veterans Day, Tom Woodard, Louie Azevedo and Ron Plasse took checks out to donate to the local Vietnam Veterans organization. The checks included $168, which was a portion of our Raffle Basket income from the Club, and a check for $768 from the garage sale sponsored by the Azevedo s, Griffith s, Wofford s, and the Woodard s. Many thanks to all the Club members who donated items to make the sale a success! Annual Halloween Party & Costume Contest Submitted by: Patty Green WOW what a great turn-out for our Halloween Party and Costume Contest. Totally blown away by the number of people who dressed up in costume, and the creativity of those costumes. It was our Pie Night to share with the Singles and Pairs, several of whom came in costume to share our festivities. Here are some pictures of the costume parade and of our costume winners: Best Couple: Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher Dave & Linda Glass Best Man: Pirate Best Woman: Mary Poppins Wackiest: Headless Guy! Rod Bruner Peggy Ross Bill Stone Shown here with her buddy Bert! Poor Bill was roasting in this costume but he stuck it out!!
There were so many great costumes, I don t know how the judges made their choices it must have been really difficult! Here are some more pictures of our dancers in costume Thanks to Xiao-Yen for sharing her pictures with me. An absolutely great night of dancing and fun!! Thanks everyone for participating!! November Magic in Plymouth with Jet Roberts and Kip Garvey Submitted by: Patty Green; Photos by Dale Reitz This was our second trip to November Magic up in Plymouth (Sierra foothills) and it was as much fun no, more fun than last year. This year our group was larger and we were able to team up for dinner on Saturday afternoon before the main hoedown Saturday night. The Reitz and Bakers had a great spot just behind the main building and we all gathered to share dinner and some casual time together. Going around the table we have: Lynn Eckert, Margie Weaver, Bruce Weaver, Peggy Ross, Patty Green, Dave Green, Karl Joost, Dawn Reitz, Evan Griffiths, Louise Joost, Chris Baker, Ed Baker, Guy Ross, Jan Eckert, and Patty Griffiths. And, look we clean up fairly well too Jet, Mary Ann, and Kip, our callers and cuer are in the background with us. Kip and Jet focused their workshops on 4-5 basic Mainstream calls that they say all Plus calls are stemmed from what?!!? Yeh so our workshop time on Saturday morning was focused on how to dance those Mainstream calls from various positions and to understand how the call is defined so we can dance it at any time it is called. It was great!! The hall was crowded with the 10 squares that it is limited to, so to make room for the dancers to execute the calls, the center row of squares danced with opposite Heads / Sides from the rest of the room. It worked like a charm we had room enough to dance without bumping to the other squares and it kept us on our toes when we were in those squares to remember which position we were homed in for the tip. Really fun!! So, mark your calendars for next year first weekend in November Plymouth for the November Magic!! Don t wait if you would like to go you could let Kip know now and reserve your spot for the weekend. Kip Garvey kip@kipgarvey.com See more pictures on our Facebook page: Circle n Squares
Beginners Hoedown -- November 10 Great Success!! Well, we weren t sure how this first Beginners Hoedown was going to go but we didn t need to worry it was A-MAZING!! Whoo Hoo!! Eric Henerlau called a great hoedown for us and was playful with our dancers, making the afternoon a lot of fun. We had 5 squares on the floor most of the afternoon, with almost a full square from the Tam Twirlers in Marin County up to share the afternoon with us. We left it open for Eric to fill the time between tips with whatever activities he thought would be fun, and he played some round dances and line dances, which you can see got folks up on the floor dancing. Most fun for those of us on the Beginners / Members Committee was watching our new dancers having fun and the HUGE smiles on their faces. Everyone danced really well and shined beautifully!! Love it!! We are planning another Beginners Hoedown for the end of February / first of March, and we are hoping it will be equally as successful as this one. Thank you to all our Club members and Beginners for coming out to the hoedown it really was a fun afternoon!! Again, you can see more pictures on our Facebook page: Review Classes for our Beginners Just a reminder Doug Saunders is offering reviews for us each week from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. before the Beginners Class -- in the Dining Room. We have several of our new dancers coming in to review before class and I am sure they will agree that it is very helpful. So, if you have missed a night or two, or just want to review some calls, join Doug in the Dining room each Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Reminder: Please come around to the back of the hall and come in the side door at the back. We do not want to disturb the class that is using the hall before us. Thank you! Other resources available to all dancers to see calls and understand what is involved in each are available on the internet. You can Google those, but here are a couple of great resources for you to check out: The video square dance lessons has a list of calls that you can select from and then watch how the call is defined and executed, watching actual square dancers do the call. The great thing about the video is that you can see how the call looks and rewatch it as many times as you would like. Taminations also has a list of calls to choose from and it uses colored figures to show how the call is executed. It is helpful, but if watching actual people is better for you, check out the site shown above.
News from Around the World Veterans Grave Dedication at Potter s Field in the Rural Cemetery, Santa Rosa Submitted by: Gary Greenough For those who may be interested, on Saturday, December 8, at 10am, there will be a special dedication of 17 veterans graves at the Potter's Field at the Rural Cemetery, Franklin Ave, Santa Rosa. There will be honor guards and color guards, speakers and a reading of the names. This is a very special ceremony, not to happen again, as 17 veterans, some of whom have been buried in the field for 50 years, will be acknowledged with full military honors. Gary Greenough, one of our Club members, will be a primary speaker, and reader of the names of the veterans. It is estimated that there are 30,000 and up to perhaps 70,000 veterans, sitting on shelves, in storage facilities, in government buildings, in mortuaries and morgues throughout the country. The Missing in America Program (MIAP) is attempting to find as many remains of veterans and have them taken and buried with other veterans at the closest National Cemetery. These 17 have been found, and being cost prohibitive to move them, it was determined by the Sheriff's Coroners Officer to leave them in Place. There is a mythical place in military lore, a place of perpetual mirth, a fiddle plays, and dancers never tire. It is a shady glen on the pathway to a soldier s just reward, a place between heaven and hell. They can stop for awhile, visit with other soldiers, tell tall tales, before continuing on. But they must first drink all the water in their canteens. The problem is, an eternal spring keeps their canteens full, so they never leave the place. It is called, Fiddler's Green. The Potter's Field will be called Fiddler's Green from now on, to reflect the resting place of these 17 soldiers. There is no cost, no donation. For anyone who is interested in seeing a full military funeral, and for those who support veterans both living and dead, an invitation is sent to all who honor veterans for their service to our country. Rural Cemetery Saturday, December 8 10:00 am. Come into the main entrance on McDonald Ave, near Pacific Market. Go up the short hill and veer to the right, and the pathway will go directly to the Potter's Field, aka Fiddler's Green. Celebrating Mary Lou s 90 th Birthday Submitted by: Peggy Ross We just recently celebrated Peggy s mom s 90 th birthday. We consider her to be 90 years young. She loves life! She is on a bowling league, loves sharing her talents with others, enjoys clowning, making crafts, traveling, RV ing, & jazz and is very active in her community with several different clubs. Nearly 60 people attended her party we had in Redding, CA. We are so thankful & blessed to have an energetic and loving mother.

Peggy & Debbie and daughters Peggy & Debbie Darren, Harvard & Ole Happy 90 th Birthday Mary Lou!! Rebuild North Bay Newspaper Article from the Press Democrat Did you see this picture and article in The Press Democrat on Sunday, November 25? It is actually a full section devoted to the progress being made in rebuilding the North Bay, and more specifically, Santa Rosa s north end. I am sharing this picture with you because the young man shown is Mike Baker, son of our Club members Chris and Ed Baker. Mike Baker, a pastor at Crosspoint Community Church, and his family found an outpouring of support from within the religious community after the 2017 fires. Mike and Zoe are rebuilding their Coffey Park home although with a different floor plan. Their house is framed, and they are hoping to move in by late spring or early summer.
Family Birthday Celebration On Sunday, November 18, Nancy Azevedo was surprised with a wonderful brunch at John Ash Event Center provided by her children to celebrate Nancy s 70 th birthday, which was November 10. A few friends and the whole family were there, including Nancy s mom Mary (great to see Mary out and about). Happy Birthday Nancy!! How Did You Spend Your Thanksgiving? Guy & Peggy Ross enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving Day in Ukiah with missing. So Blessed! Dave & Patty Green celebrated Thanksgiving with their daughter, Shasta, and their grandchildren Emerald, Willow, & Juniper at R Wild Horse Ranch near Red Bluff. Sue & Loren Cooper celebrated Thanksgiving 2018 in Redding HOPE S (Evan s Mom) POUND BARS NOTE: My folks were avid square and round dancers. This was a favorite to share at hoedowns and after parties. Prep: Grease 13 X 9 baking dish, pre-heat oven to 350 degrees, chop one cup walnuts, warm margarine (butter) and cream cheese to room temp. Evan brought these bars to Plymouth to share and everyone loved them and asked for the recipe. Thx!
On the Mend Nancy Azevedo Nancy is making great progress and with the physical therapy she is doing we are hoping she will be back on the dance floor real soon. Linda Glass Linda is making great progress in her recovery from her knee replacement surgery. At our Beginners Hoedown, I think I saw her out doing a little line dancing. Easy start small steps and she will be dancing again soon. Carol Turek is still being haunted by her hip pain and it is keeping her from dancing. But, Carol is a trooper and is out at workshop each week, and can occasionally do a round dance or two. Rumor has it surgery may be her New Year s gift so think positive thoughts and keep Carol in your prayers for a quick recovery if she has the surgery and for relief from her pan. Margie Weaver After her heart attack in July, Margie has limited her dancing to a tip or two a night, but still enjoys her round dancing. She is staying cautious and trying to give her heart and her body time to heal. Keep her in your prayers for a full recovery so we can have her back on the dance floor for every tip. SUNSHINE Patty Griffiths is our Sunshine Chair, joined by Peggy Ross as her back-up -- both doing a great job in keeping up with who is under the weather and may need a card or other note of cheer to help them through a tough time. Please continue to let Patty or Peggy know when a Club member or new dancer is unable to dance for medical / physical reason and our Sunshine team will be sure to get a card or note to them from our Club. If you, or someone else you know in the Club, are under the weather, have suffered the loss of a loved one, are having surgery, or whatever, please let our Sunshine Chair Patty Griffiths -- know so we can get a card to that person and/or their family. Patty s Number is: (707) Peggy at (707) E pattyg821@gmail.com plr823@gmail.com
