2 2 Zou Li Min Master Coach and King of the High Bar I have known Li Min for just over 20 years. We often joked together that we were brothers. When I first met him he was young coach at the Australian Institute of Sport and I was just learning how to be a proper men s gymnastics coach. We were lucky in that the Club was granted access by the AIS for our boys to train in their gym on a Saturday afternoon. Being a senior coach, Li Min, would watch me bumbling along but if I asked, he was the one coach who would come over and teach both me and the boys the correct techniques necessary to master a skill. This was indicative of the nature of the man he appeared shy but he would always offer assistance and get fully involved, particularly once he got to know you. Zou Li Min was born Shandong in He trained at the local State Gymnastics Institute and at age 12 he was selected to join the Chinese National Team training squad. He moved to Beijing and trained at the Beijing Institute of Sport living in the sports dormitory going to school, eating, sleeping and training there. His coach was Mr Goh, and that s the way Li Min always referred to him, and who later became the President of the Chinese Gymnastics Federation and a member of the Chinese Polituro. By age 19, Li Min was starting to make his mark as a gymnast, along with Li Ning, as the first of the new wave of Chinese gymnasts breaking onto the world stage. He was a member of the Chinese national team from 1979 until he retired in High Bar was his thing he was the Chinese national Champion on High Bar for six straight years but he was also pretty good on Parallel Bars. He won high bar at the 1983 Tokyo Cup, and placed fifth all-around and first on high bar at the 1984 DTB World Cup. His best results came in 1985, when he helped China win a team silver in the Montreal Olympics. He also won the all-around title at the 1985 Kraft International in London and again in Montreal, he won the silver medal on high bar at the 1985 World Championships. Li Min gained a Bachelor Degree in Sports Coaching from the University of Shandong and, at the same time, was courting Mr Goh s niece, a beautiful young lady, named Shuang. They married in Even now Li Min still has a skill named after him in the FIG Code of Points. He often told the boys whom he coached that, while he was competing internationally, he was awarded the then perfect score of 10, 10 times, both on High Bar and Parallel Bars. When Li Min retired as a competitor in 1986, he was selected as a MAG National Team Coach at the Beijing Institute of Sport. While at the Beijing Institute he coached two boys who went on to win World Championship medals, a forerunner to what he really was capable of doing. He moved to the Starwanger Club in Norway in 1990 to broaden his experience in a completely different environment. As the Starwanger Head Coach, he coached their WAG Team to win the Senior Norwegian WAG Team Championships in 1991, 1992 and In 1993 he was recruited by the AIS and came to Australia as a Level 3 MAG Coach to coach members of the Australian Men s Team. He was one of a great team of coaches at the AIS but he was that little bit different because he became a personal mentor to so many of his gymnasts. One of them told me last week that Li Min had given him the desire to train well, to love his friends and to generally be a much better person. Li Min turned that boy s life around and for that reason, he, like the rest of us, will always love him and now, like us all, will miss him terribly. I remember that when he was coaching my boys at the AIS he used to you must hit the whertical position, instead of vertical. They used to laugh and he would say help me, my English not so good. That may have been true but his coaching technique and his interaction with those boys, even though, at time, they were not his, was unbelievable. In 1997 he was told that the AIS no longer had the money to pay his wage and his position was terminated. When he left he was carrying a severe neck injury that restricted his ability to spot correctly. Even while carrying this injury but, because of his talent, he was offered and accepted the position as the first MAG coach at the West Australian Institute of Sport. While he was there, he quickly started identifying young gymnasts who could be prepared to go onto the highest levels. In 1999, Li Min and his family moved back to Canberra, ostensibly because his family missed Canberra but I believe that he felt it was more, that he was worried that his neck injury was restricting his ability to coach. When I knew the family was back in Canberra, I tried very hard to get him to coach at Woden. He would come in some days but found he could not coach full time. Fortunately for us, my wife who is a doctor, went to a pain management course and was told of a technique that could alleviate his pain. It worked and, lucky for us, Li Min took up the position of Head MAG Coach at WVGC and has been with us ever since. Most of you will understand the use of harnesses over equipment, particularly over the pit, where a coach holds one end to support a gymnast as he does a skill. I have seen Li Min do this numerous times and end hanging 10 or 12 feet in the air. He was fearless but would release the rope often saying you re too fat, you need to lose weight. In many cases this was said to a 19 year old, 5 6 gymnast in peak physical condition. This belief of his own indestructibility was ingrained and probably contributed to him fishing off the rocks at the South Coast.

3 3 Li Min was a MAG International Coach and he has coached WVGC gymnasts to a degree where they have been offered AIS scholarships. He has also coached numerous Club gymnasts as Overall Australian National Levels Champions and Apparatus and Team medalists. In the time he has been at Woden he prepared some 175 male gymnasts to compete at National Championships and returned with the same number of team and individual medals. Li Min was Gymnastics Australia MAG National Levels Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2010 and prepared a gymnast to first place on Vault in the 2012 Austrian Future Cup, which is effectively the World Junior Championships, and again at 2013 Australian National Championships. It was his belief, and mine too, that that there was, and is, the potential from within the Club environment to prepare gymnasts who could now be on the world stage starting their careers, as Li Min did back in I might mention that the boys working with him in the Club are not gymnasts who have come from High Performance Centres but are kids that have come out of the suburbs and said I want to do gymnastics. Li Min had that unique ability to get the best out of his gymnasts, to be able to relate with them and to teach them skills that they never dreamed that they could do. I can still remember him standing at one end of the gym watching a gymnast at the other end of the gym. He would whistle, not loudly but such that all his gymnasts would turn to look at him, a bit like Pavlov s dogs. He would indicate who he wanted to attract and correct mistakes using gymnastics hand sign language. Li Min studied the techniques being used by gymnasts all around the world and adapted his coaching technique continually. He studied how the shape of the Vault had changed and what that meant with the way a gymnast should leave the horse how the spring boards had changed and what that meant to the shape of the gymnast when he or she hit and left the board how the rebound had changed in floor and what that meant to twisting and saltos from the floor and how the bars on Parallel Bars had changed and what that meant for doing skills on and below the bars. He was innovative and, from my limited knowledge, a world leader who has really been ignored here in Australia much like the fabled prophet in his own land. He had the ability to coach techniques that are unique to the top coaches in the world, like the coaches of Korean Hak Seon Yang on Vault and of Kohei Uchimura on Floor. I encouraged Li Min to apply for the coaching position at The National Centre of Excellence at the AIS. He was very upset that he did not get the job because all he ever wanted was to be able help get Australia to the top. Being the sort of person he was, he accepted the decision and immediately put his heart and soul into back into working with his boys. However, together, we had new plans for the future and he was excited to be leading them. He was recently offered the position of Head Coach in Malaysia. I urged him to take it and prove himself from over there. He only refused two weeks ago because of his love for his family, for Australia and our gym. He believed that here, he had gymnasts working with him or who wanted to work with him that would prove that together, he, the Club and they, would prove that he could teach them the techniques for them to reach the top levels in Australia and the world. Li Min was thorough gentleman in every sense of the word. I remember numerous times when a gymnast would fall off the Pommel and turn around and strike it. Li Min would get angry, often throw his shoe at them and say You piss me off get out. When they came back into the gym and apologised to him, he would explain You are not setting a good example to the younger boys, so please don t do that. Do you understand? He did not only teach gymnastics, he taught life skills and so many of our young people owe him so much. He would always be there to help, even when others hadn t even thought about helping. He was not afraid to get his hands dirty. He would give his time freely and he wasn t one to sit back and watch someone struggle to do something, particularly when they appeared to need help. He was greatly loved and respected by everyone with whom he worked. Li Min was so humble that I think he would be very surprised at the number of people who are here to-day. He really would not have been aware of just how many people, not only here in Canberra, but around Australia and the world that he has touched and helped. To Shuang, Annette and Natalie I offer my sympathy and my support, as I am sure, that everyone who is here, does as well. To the three of you I can say wholeheartedly your husband and father loved you more than anything in the world and he would never do anything to hurt you. This accident is so unfair. Li Min had so much to live for. He was your friend and mine, in many cases your coach and mentor as he was mine, he is your husband and father, and he still is - my brother. May he rest in peace.

4 Term 4 Kindergym Program WOW, it is term 4 already. What a busy year it has been so far and continues to be up until the last week. The Kindergym themes for Term 4, 2015 are as follows: Weeks 1 & 2 Playschool Weeks 3 & 4 Melbourne Cup Weeks 5 & 6 Making Music Weeks 7 & 8 Teddy Bears Picnic Weeks 9 & 10 Christmas The skill focus for this term will be: Crossing the midline; Landings and rotation; and Hand eye coordination. 4 The Kindergym program at Woden Valley Gymnastics Club keeps growing and growing. The program is managed by Naomi Nye, assisted by Rosi Iglewski and Kirsten Jelfs. Naomi spends a considerable amount of time preparing themes, music and circuits to make the program both interesting and educational. The themes and the circuits change every two weeks so that the children constantly do different things on different apparatus. This helps develop all gross motor skills by including different muscle groups on a regular basis. Educational research shows that children learn best through exploring and discovering their abilities through physical activity. Our Kindergym program ensures children can experience a wide range of movement activities and be encouraged to think, create, construct and solve problems with their own bodies. Our Kindergym Program runs every day of the week and caters for children from 9 months of age through to five years old. It is an integral part of our Launchpad accreditation that shows that our Club follows Gymnastics Australia s combined fundamental movement and brain development initiative. Woden Valley Gymnastics Club was the first Club in Canberra to be Launchpad accredited and still leads the way in promoting Launchpad activities. The Woden Valley GYMNASTICS EXTRAVAGANZA will be held on Sunday December 6 this year. This is a fun event that allows for Kindergym participants to show off their awesome skills in a relaxed environment to their friends and relatives. Each participant will leave with a medal, a certificate and the all-important balloon, sausage and a drink. Have a wonderful term, learning, exploring and improving the gymnastics skills we love to share with you and your children. While they are being entertained you can go to the movies, out for a meal or just enjoy the solitude at home for a few hours on a Saturday evening. 5 Gym for All LaunchPad As mentioned at the start of the year, the planned in class assessment of recreational gymnasts was implemented. This is a new system that we are introducing and as with anything new, there are things that worked well and areas where we can improve the process for coaches, gymnasts and parents. 5 The assessment and progress report is to act as a guide, as to whether your child needs to progress to a new level or if they need to continue working on their skills within the level they are already in. In the future we are aiming to make the report more user-friendly and personal to each individual child. If you have any feedback that you feel would be useful, please don t hesitate to let us know. Groove and Move We have been having fun in class while learning new skills, improving balance and co-ordination. We incorporate games, juggling, skipping, hoops, balls, movement to music, etc, as well as fun circuits and laughter into our lessons. All people aged 50 + are invited to join us on a Monday 1430 until 1530 or on a Wednesday 0800 until You don t have to have any gymnastics ability, just a willingness to give things a go and set your own individual skill goals. EnableGym We have participants of varying ages, needs and abilities who enjoy the benefits of gymnastics in our EnableGym program, a program specifically designed for those with special needs. We run private or small group sessions with qualified gymnastics coaches. The benefits and improvements that the staff see in our Enable Gymnasts are abundant. 6 St George Bank and Fund Raising As has been highlighted in past Newsletters, the Club has signed an agreement with the St George Bank. In this agreement the Club is given a small % of the total home loan if it is taken out by a member of the Club. There is no cost to the person and the Club receives what can be classified as a spotter s fee. We have just received our first payment of over $1, and this will make a welcome addition to our fund raising efforts. We would like to thank that anonymous family who has taken out a loan with St George and if you, or even someone you know, are interested in buying a new home, please see St George and mention that you are a member of Woden Valley Gymnastics Club. Talk to Jamie McGee, Mobile Lending Manager, Canberra on , or mcgeej@stgeorge.com.au Good Sports Club Accreditation 6 We have now been accredited as a Level 3 Good Sports Club. As a result, you will see the Good Sports logo on some our Coaches Shirts. We are also going to try to offer some different healthy food selections at our Saturday barbeques, so if you have any ideas of cheap easy to prepare and easy to deliver health foods that we can offer at our regular sausage sizzles, please do not hesitate to talk with us. Aerial Dance Unfortunately our Aerial Dance teacher has left the Club and we are unable to continue with this program. However, we are actively looking for a replacement and if we find one, we would love to start this program again. We will keep you informed. Acro The Level Fours have just finished their competition season for the year, culminating in the National Clubs Championships in Bendigo. It was a good year with the best results happening at National Clubs: Mia and Rachel L4 women's pair - 6th in balance, dynamic, and overall; Kate, Melissa, and Rachel L4 women's group - 4th in balance and 6th overall. Well done to the team. Some of the groups will be re-organised for next year, and we will be actively seeking new athletes to help fill spots that are available on some of the teams. Please see Quintin if there is an interest in being assessed for the National Acro Training Team. It is now the development squad's (L1-3) turn to begin their competition season - we wish them all good luck in the lead up to their first Sydney competition in October. 9 9 Make-up Classes If you know you are going to be away for one or two classes during a Term, or even if your child is sick and misses a class, you should know that we allow up to 2 make-up classes in that Term. All you have to do is ring the Front Office in the Front Office and tell our staff that you would like your child to do a make-up lesson. They will check the rolls and help you decide which extra day you would like to come in for the make-up class. Please note that this is a little more difficult for National Levels gymnasts as their class times are set. However, if you speak to Steve Flanagan, Tae Tyrrel or Bob Morton they should be able to arrange for son or daughter to do a makeup class with another group or Level. Sporting Schools The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has launched a new initiative to help strengthen the connection between schools and sport so that all Australian children can get active and experience the joy of sport. From 2015, Sporting Schools will become Australia s largest participation program for all children to foster a lifelong interest in sport. It is aimed at fostering a lifelong interest in sport and developing a healthier mind and body while being actively engaged and having fun in a safe environment. With a $100 million investment from the Australian Government, Sporting Schools will draw on the successful elements of the ASC s Active After-school Communities (AASC) program, which concluded on 31 December Funding is available for schools who can then ask Clubs to provide quality, qualified coaches to deliver their programs to the students at the school.
