1 Dear Parents and Carers, Newsletter 31st March 2017 Easter Egg Competition Thank you to all the pupils who produced such great entries for our Easter Egg Competition this week. They were all so original and well thought out, that it made judging them an incredibly difficult task. We eventually settled on the following entries to select our winners and they are: Lower School: 1st Adele P (Tamarisk) Working Farm Upper School: 1st Evie E (Silver Birch) Eggyptian 2nd Owen G (Sycamore) The Nest 2nd Holly W (Silver Birch) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 3rd Scarlett H (Sycamore) Tour de France 3rd Seren A (Silver Birch) Breggsit Our Overall Winner was Bonnie H in Willow Class with her entry, Little Egg Riding Hood. You can see some of the entries in the newsletter. Well done to everyone who participated! Red Nose Day Our annual cake sale was a real success and as a school we managed to raise towards Comic Relief. A huge thank you to all our families who baked and donated cakes for the sale, and to our parents, friends and pupils that bought them! The children seemed to have difficulty choosing a cake as they all looked really delicious. A huge thanks goes to Mrs Casey and her team of House Captains for arranging the event, organising the posters and setting up the cake sale. Well done to Yellow Team who raised the most money. Easter Assembly Last week Year 3 led a delightful Easter Assembly for the school, reminding us all of the Easter story and the message of hope that Easter brings. I was very proud of all the children and impressed with how well they had learnt their lines and all the words to the songs. It was such a pleasure to watch them perform and we hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did. Well done to our Year 3 pupils and thank you to Miss Proudfoot, Miss Ellis and Miss Foster for putting such a lovely assembly together. Year 4 Hindleap Warren Trip Year 4 had a fantastic time on their residential trip this week! For many children it was their first time away from home, so some children (and parents) were feeling very nervous about the days and nights ahead. The children soon forgot their worries when they arrived as any nerves were replaced with excitement for the activities that had been planned for the day ahead. On the first day, making their bed up was an adventure in itself, but we are pleased to say, they mastered the art of fitting a duvet cover in time to have their lunch and kickstart their activity schedules that afternoon! Thank you to all our teachers, helpers and Mrs Hudson who led the trip. Lastly, a very big thank you to all the children for being so well behaved! Film Nights This week we held our very first Film Night for the children and we would like to thank you for your support! We were trialling it as a possible fundraiser for additional art supplies for our pupils, and it was a resounding success. The children loved the novelty and they were able to relax with friends and watch a good film with their snack and drink. I would like to note that their behaviour was exemplary and we hope to run a few more over the next year. Mrs Kimani spearheaded this fundraiser and we would like to thank her for organising it, all our staff who volunteered to help and to you our families, for your support. 2 Staff Update Sadly, Miss Gibson and Miss Le Marquand will be leaving us at the end of this academic year. Miss Le Marquand will be getting married in the Summer and moving to Southampton, where she will be teaching in a local school. Miss Gibson, who began her career as an NQT at our school, is planning a move out of the area. Both of them are amazing teachers so will be missed at The Hermitage School, but we wish them every success in their new schools and careers. We have two new teachers joining our team in September; Mr Goodall, a teacher with many years teaching experience and Mr Tolfrey, who some of you may recognise as the SCITT who has been training with us this year. I am sure that you join us in welcoming them to our school community. This is my last newsletter this term and we wish you all a happy and enjoyable Easter. Thank you for the ongoing support of your children s learning and our school. Yours faithfully, Mrs K Knight Headteacher School Photographs The school photographer will be taking class photographs next term on Thursday, 20th April. 3 Year 6 - Junior Citizen Programme Year 6 went to the Junior Citizen Programme at Woking Football Ground on March 24th. It was great fun and it taught us what to do if there was a fire or how electricity is only dangerous if we don't respect how much it can harm us. We did a role play on how you can save someone if you cannot swim. (You can see this in the photograph on the right) I enjoyed the Junior Citizen Programme because it wasn't just sitting and listening to someone talk about safety. We kept moving to different parts of the ground and we took part in all the activities which made us listen and understand more. I really enjoyed it. By Jessica M (Ash Class) Year 5 Choral Day at Christ s Hospital school A few members of the school choir were invited to a Choral Day at Christ s Hospital school. As we walked into the chapel, we could see stunning glass stained windows. There were organ pipes at each end of the chapel which made music from the organ leader sound so powerful. Our conductor was David Lawrence, Director of Young Voices. He coached us in the morning and taught us to sing four songs, Stronger Together, Why we Sing, Musical Memories and The Song of Ireland. In the afternoon, we performed these songs to our parents who came to watch. It was a great experience and a lovely day out. By Annabel R and Isobel G (Silver Birch Class) On Monday 20th March three professional golfers from Hoebridge Golf Club came to The Hermitage school to teach us the basics of golf. Does your child use the internet? Do you know how to keep them safe? Useful websites that EVERY parent should visit: They set out 8 different fun activities, including putting and chipping. We had to get into teams and each game we played was up to 10 points and whoever got the most points won. We enjoyed trying to hit the ball as far and as straight as we could. We all had great fun. By Fenn H, Max M and Lewis M (Silver Birch Class) thinkuknow.co.uk parentinfo.org childnet.com nspcc.org.uk Internetmatters.org/ A useful website for parents who would like information on how to talk to their children about internet use is:

4 Year 5 Topic - We are Scientists On 28th March, Year 5 had a visit from Lizzie B s dad who is a scientist. He did an experiment to show us how to make hand cream. We each had a pot with coloured water and oil in it. We shook them to try and mix them together but it didn't work. We then added an emulsifier and when we shook it this time, it all stuck together. It was amazing! It was fun and exciting. By Paige V and Seren A (Silver Birch Class) Aidan C in Oak Class has been so inspired by his learning in the Year 3 topic, Footprints in Time, that he created his own roundhouse model. Aidan used recycled materials to achieve this and put in a huge amount of effort. That effort certainly paid off! Well done Aidan. Forest School Update This half term Mr Cook has begun Forest School sessions with some children from Year 5. He is currently studying to become an accredited Forest School leader and once this has been completed, The Hermitage School will be expanding its Forest School provision to include every year group. The children thoroughly enjoyed using the new skills they have been learning; they created free standing 'Twig towers' (though some looks suspiciously like branches) using a range of rope work and knots to secure the structures. Other skills they have learnt or will be learning include; sawing with bush saws, whittling with knives and fire lighting with flint and steel. Forest School provides a holistic approach to education in and around nature; as well as using tools, the children will be learning to identify plants and trees and to become more attuned to the world around them. If you would like to volunteer to become a Forest School helper or have the knowledge to help grow our burgeoning outdoor area (perhaps through an interest in bushcraft, tree surgery or traditional crafts) please contact Mr Cook via the school office to arrange a conversation.

5 On Thursday the house captains organised a bake sale to raise money for comic relief. It was a very eventful day especially sorting out the cakes for the sale. There was an extremely long queue of very hungry children. The smell was sweet and the house captains were good at not taking any cakes but selling them to their eager customers. After school there was a big rush of parents and their children to buy the remaining cakes. They were really tasty and raised 376. Well done to everyone. By Tom E (Ash Class) Our Great Golf Adventure As you can see, the pupils really got into the spirit of things at this year s Red Nose Day celebrations. Children baked and sold cakes to raise money for Comic Relief and came dressed up in something funny on Friday 24th March. We even found the rarest and scariest Nose of all, Frankinose the Ultra Rare silver one!

7 Last Wednesday the school choir went to the Woking Music Festival at the Prince s Hall in Aldershot. We all got there for the rehearsals at 4.30pm. We rehearsed until 6pm and then we had our dinner and continued to practise all our songs again. After dinner, it was Showtime! When we walked onto the stage, all the parents clapped. We got through the first part of the concert without making any mistakes. The Surrey Youth Choir came on and amazed everyone with their singing. In the second part of the concert, once we had finished all our songs, the audience joined in and sang with us. That took our breathe away! The audience applauded really loudly for all of the schools when the performance was over. It was the best concert ever. By Kayleigh A, Choir Captain (Maple Class) The BDB Tournament is an annual netball tournament that is organised by The Cardinals Netball Club. There were seven pupils in our team: Phoebe B, Dewi G, Ayaan K, Michaela H, Megan R and Tilly T. We needed to play four matches to qualify for the quarter-finals. Our amazing team won 5-0 in the first match, 1-0 to us in the second game, 3-2 to the other team in our fourth match and we won our last match. After waiting a while, it was announced by the host that The Hermitage School had made it to the quarter-finals! We were very excited and proud. Sadly, we lost that match. A big congratulations to our school team who played so well! By Phoebe B (Maple Class) Some of our Egg-cellent Easter Egg Entries.
