CHAPTER DIRECTOR NEWS Hello Chapter and Friends, IN THIS ISSUE As you are reading this newsletter, we're at Wing Ding right CD News 1-2 now. We are having lots of fun and meeting a lot more friends. I'm looking HELMETS forward to meeting a gentleman 3 and his motorcycle called SPONSORS black flash. If you get a chance look on YouTube, type in black flash. This is an amazing Texas District Team motorcycle and light show. Carnell Luckett is gentleman's name. Group Riding This is one of the K2 Team purposes of GWRRA, making new friends and making Tips new from memories. Donna For the ones that could not make it to Wing Ding, hope you can make it next time. K2 Members There are more rallies coming up soon. We will be attending Chapter JULY T Rally BIKE NIGHT in Killeen and Chapter H Rally in San Antonio and By ours the Book coming -Jack October Wagner 14 th. Everybody get ready for fun in the sun. August Calendar & Rides I'm also looking forward to our Chapter going to Big Bend MEC for the second time. We have several days of good riding down there. Other CELEBRATION Chapters from & Tagomatic Texas will be joining us and be riding as a BIG group BEND making more memories and friends. For Sale Our ACD, Armando came out of surgery very well. He's Editor Notes home now resting and can't wait to get back on his Wing and we can't wait to HUMOR have him back in our Chapter and the community doing Rally all Flyers his volunteer work. Before you know, our Christmas party will be coming up. We will have it again in Lacoste (pot luck this year). There will be gift exchange, music, karaoke and even going to have a singing Santa Claus. Come visit us this year.

For those that have not been riding much. Make sure you start checking your bikes t-clocks. It is always important on every ride. We will be taking longer rides as soon as the weather starts cooling down. Start dusting off your winter jackets make sure they still fit and get your winter gear in shape. We're trying to put a ride to Corpus Christi very soon and this time go fishing. No rocking gambling boat this time. If you care to go please let me know so we can set a weekend. The 2018 Texas District Rally is in the works and will be so much fun. There will be a lot of Vendors: merchandize and food. Some good rides and great memories. Can t wait! Hope to see yall there. 3 HELMETS VOLUME 2, ISSUE 9 September 2017 Page 3 A helmet is designed to save your head from impacts that would otherwise be life threatening or altering. brainer err. a brainer? Whatever. Dinner at Acadiana Café Nothing is worse than a life altering head injury that could have been prevented with one piece of protective equipment, especially for those in your life who depend on you. Rock the Gear has guidelines to help you choose the right helmet, make sure it will do what it promises, and that it fits just right. Click any of the hyperlinks to learn more about the technical elements we mention. How to identify a great helmet: A proper helmet is made of four equally important parts: outer shell, foam liner, comfort padding and retention system. All of these parts work together to protect your skull and brain from injury, so skipping even one component would be a bad move. Generally, all motorcycle helmets get more comfortable as you continue to wear them. Always make sure you start with a tight fit. Ensure that the helmet never gets too loose. Usually, these pads can be removed for washing, which usually helps them perk back up a little as well. IN A NUTSHELL (no pun intended) you want something that is going to prevent head injury, be comfortable every time you ride, and look good (in that order), so take your time when choosing the right helmet. 4 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 9 September 2017 Page 4 (continued from previous page) How to make sure you have a good fit: A perfect fit is just as important as what the helmet is made of, because the fit can affect the way the helmet performs during that crucial moment. The first step is knowing your head shape and matching it to the internal shape of the helmet. Did you know there are three general head shapes, and each helmet model corresponds to one of those three shapes? Learn how to find your head shape HERE. The second step is to measure your head for a baseline measurement. Each manufacturer uses slightly different methods for sizing, so knowing your measurement can help more than knowing your general size. Tips when trying on a helmet: If you can remove the helmet with the chin strap buckled tightly, if the helmet can move easily and independently while it is on your head, if your ears are not touching the internal comfort padding, or if it falls down over your eyes, then the helmet is too big. If you can significantly bite the inside of your cheeks when you open and close your mouth while the helmet is on, if you feel extreme pressure on your temples, if your chin sticks out from under the chin bar or if it gives you a hot spot on your forehead, then the helmet is either too small or the wrong shape. Important to remember: No matter how well the helmet fits, it s not going to protect your head if it is strapped to the backseat of your bike. don t be that rider.

9 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 9 September 2017 Page 9 TIPS from Donna Summer has been hot and humid, but that's a given for Texas. Breakfast runs with a short ride following seems to be the answer for those triple digit days. Yummy! The Guenther House has a huge breakfast platter as well as OST! It's a good thing I am skinny (well, I am!..when I stand halfway in front of a full length mirror). We're Texas tough, however, and adding a couple of evening rides to the calendar was an experiment for perseverance! I look forward to the cooler days ahead when I don't pull in from a ride, totally drenched. When the pumpkins (the real ones!) show up at HEB in September, I start getting excited. I love pumpkin everything! Pumpkin Cheerios, pumpkin/chocolate cookies, pumpkin pie, pumpkin muffins. Ok, Ok! I love pumpkin stuff. That also means that October is just around the corner, so longer rides in the Hill Country and new places where we haven't been, to explore. Do you hear "ROAD TRIP"???? Look out Big Bend, here we come Oct 25-29!! If you have a favorite ride or some new place you would like to go, please shoot me an at gwrrachapterk2@gmail.com. We are going to put the museums in Cuervo and Gonzalez, TX back on the calendar for November. We can do both in one day. We have the Lone Star Rally coming up the first weekend in November (Nov 2-4) so keep your gear ready to go. With that said, the days will be getting shorter (as in getting darker earlier) so make sure your lights are in good working order, to include brake lights and turn signals. 13 By the Book The By the Book articles are intended to help familiarize Volunteer Leaders and GWRRA members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer s Handbook (OHB). Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District, or Chapter newsletters. THE IDEALS OF GWRRA The most important ingredient for a successful Association is the Member. Where do we find them and how do we make these people interested enough to want to become one of us? Before anyone can be successful in selling GWRRA, they must first sit for a moment and determine the reason they joined. Each of us had our own reasons it may have been the emphasis on keeping each other safe when riding, the 'G-rated' family atmosphere of our events or that we know the best places for food and desserts. In most cases the motorcycles brought us together and it s the relationships and ideals of GWRRA that keep us together. Let's take a closer look at these ideals: PROMOTE SAFETY - This will help us continue to enjoy our hobby. We can also enjoy the fact that we are doing something to protect others by teaching them safe riding practices. We are saving lives! PROMOTE FRIENDSHIP - Among ALL of the motorcycling public. What better way to enjoy our way of life than 9 to make friends and share with them? PROMOTE THE POSITIVE IMAGE OF THE MOTORCYCLE RIDER We must always keep our best foot forward. PROMOTE FUN - This is the glue that holds it all together! We didn t want to miss anything and got here on Tuesday. Rally is breathtaking. So many old and new friends and Chapter K2 Members. Goldwing Bikes from everywhere in every color and with many lights. As the boat circled to pick him up, he noticed a hunter sitting in a duck boat in the reeds. My husband put his hands in the air and joked, Don t shoot! The hunter responded, Don t quack. Add quick cooking oats, peanut butter, and vanilla; mix well. Working quickly, drop by teaspoonfuls onto waxed paper, and let cool.
