The Independent Order of Odd Fellows lodges, Merrick Lodge #31 and Will Poutch Lodge #40 collected food and toys and gave these donations to the Garrard County Food Pantry.

After the final tally there were more than 110 dancers were in attendance. The food that was brought was delicious and plentiful.

Mark, Katie, Sharon & Rick did a wonderful job of hosting this very special event.

Banquet Pictures 5 Regional Club 6 Dance Schedule & Info Christmas Banquet On Dec. 6, Katie, Sharon & Rick Morgan hosted a festive Christmas Banquet at the Lexington Odd Fellows Hall. Attendees were asked to bring a side dish and a non-perishable food item and/or a new toy. Several turkeys and hams were supplied by the hosts. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows lodges, Merrick Lodge #31 and Will Poutch Lodge #40 collected food and toys and gave these donations to the Garrard County Food Pantry. Originally Katie had received in the neighborhood of 85 confirmed dancers to attend the banquet. Based on these numbers, table settings were made for 92 people. After the final tally there were more than 110 dancers were in attendance. The food that was brought was delicious and plentiful. One of the fears anytime you host a pot-luck dinner, is that will there be enough food for everyone?, especially when more people show up than actually signed up. Mark, Katie, Sharon & Rick did a wonderful job of hosting this very special event. There are countless tasks that are required to successfully pull off such a big event and these hosts did a great job. They would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the other dancers that pitched in to offer their assistance in setting up and packing up the tables & chairs, getting the food ready, cleaning off the tables, washing the mountain of dirty dishes after the dance was over. There are many other tasks and many, many dancers who helped, thank you all. Cont. on Page 3

2 Page 2 Message from the KFSD President Hello Square Dance Friends. I want to start our new year on a positive note by saying we are blessed every day because we live in our great country, the United States of America. Two of our greatest blessings are our Freedoms and our Democracy. The generations before us, starting with the founding fathers of America, realized the importance of the people having freedoms to choose and make decisions about their lives. Our Democracy is an important part of those freedoms. These freedoms and democracy are important to our square dance world also. Donna and I were elected to be your representatives in the office of President of the Kentucky Federation of Square Dancers. We believe that we, as your elected representatives, are your servants and it is our job to serve you as square dancers in the Federation. More importantly, we know that square dancers are people and part of our responsibility as your elected leaders is to serve each person as a human being. Showing courtesy and respect for other dancers is a great way for all of us to pay it forward and promote square dancing. The Federation is working on several projects for One project is getting information out to all club presidents on square dancing etiquette. This review might help us all remember and think how to be more courteous. We are developing a survey to send to all clubs that will give all dancers an opportunity to express concerns and ask questions and contribute ideas. There is a 2 day special 4th of July dance scheduled in Shepherdsville with, Tony Kincade, Kenny Jarvis and Wes Dyer scheduled to call. Fliers and details will be out later. We are organizing a Federation visiting team of square dancers that will select a club dance in our federation once a month and travel together and visit that dance. If you want to be part of a fun group let us know, please. We are often asked why two different organizations for square dancing? The Federation was formed to promote square dancing over all of Kentucky, and to unite and promote cooperation between clubs, callers and members, to give us more freedom in planning and helping promote square dancing. 3 Page 3 Message from Blue Spirit Region To all fellow square dancers, This message is going to be one of the more personal ones we have published. Lately you may (or may not) have noticed our absence at a number of square dance events (lessons, dances, Adv. Dancing, etc.) George has recently been diagnosed (again) with cancer of the bone marrow. He feels fine because this time they have caught it before it progressed too far. With this type of cancer one of the primary effects is the lack of white blood cells. This means that George is very aware of how many people seem to have a cold or the flu. With the current state of his health, he is attempting to minimize the possibility of catching something that his immune system might not be able to fight. i.e. he s staying home. The current plan is to start a week of chemotherapy Jan. 5, then wait 6 weeks for the body to recover. This will be followed by a bone marrow biopsy to see whether more treatment will be necessary. The chemo is exactly the same as what was used last time that got him into remission for several years. Until George isn t so paranoid about catching germs we will be staying home in front the TV & computer. We would appreciate if someone would volunteer to do the newsletter each quarter, especially now. If anyone is interested, please call. George and Margaret Scott BlueSpirit_Scott@bellsouth.net or Christmas Banquet (cont.) The after dinner entertainment was billed as the Square & Round Dance Academy Awards hosted by Mark Patterson. There were several very square dance appropriate categories for award recognition. Mark credited the accounting firm of Wee, Schrumm and Howe for tabulating the results. I m not sure any credit was given as to who the actual nominating committee was or where the actual votes came from. When I asked Katie about this part of the awards, she just giggled and walked away. Rick Morgan attends many local square dances and you may or may not have noticed he frequently has a camera in his hand. Sharon is also very active with her camera. There were pictures (from the Morgan photo archive) for every nominee. Some were rather spectacular as to how candid they were. It was amazing when Mark announced the nominees for each award that the murmur from the audience accurately picked the winner before Mark could announce it.

The certificates have been forwarded via to the club officer who sent the initial information to me. If you have not received it, please let me know. Keep in mind that any time your club does not dance at their regular location and/or regular day and time that Markel Insurance Co has on file, the club must submit a Request for Certificate for the change. Otherwise the club does not have liability coverage for that dance. So, make sure you send in the Certificate Request. Check with the Insurance Coordinator of the association you have the insurance through for the lead time needed. Don't wait until the last minute. It takes time to get the certificates from USDA and the insurance company. To make life easy you can just the Certificate Requests to me. I don t need two copies.
