1 Poinsettia Palette As I write this, we have finished the second paint-in for the poinsettia projects. What a lovely way to spend the day; listening to the rain and painting poinsettias. As I look at the finished pieces, they are all so beautiful and each is unique. I got so tired on one of the paint-ins, I spelled my name wrong as I signed the finished piece. I guess that s when you know its time to pack up and paint again another day. I want to thank all you wonderful painters that are working on the quilt and on the convention table decorations. We will definitely take tickets and pictures for the marketplace in Wichita. I selfishly want someone in our chapter to buy the winning ticket for the quilt, but a fundraiser is a fundraiser so we need to share the opportunity. We had lots of fun at the March meeting. Have you finished your apron? And those green costumes. What wonderful creative imaginations you all have. I can hardly wait for the next meeting in April to see the Easter baskets and bonnets. If you would like to donate your basket to the Tender Life children, let Terrie know. She is investigating to see how many children might want them. See you on the 11 th of April! 2 RECIPE BOX 2 Unbelievably Good and Easy Cookies This is so simple, you won't believe how good they are! 1/4 cup butter or margarine 1 8 oz pkg. cream cheese (I used the 1/3 less fat variety) 1 egg 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1 (18.5 oz) box devils food cake mix Cream butter and cream cheese, blend in egg and vanilla. Add dry cake mix about 1/3 at a time mixing well after each addition. Chill 30 minutes. Drop by scant teaspoons onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. makes 6 to 8 dozen. Makes a good soft cookie. Use any flavor cake mix, roll dough in waxed paper before putting in fridge and just slice off little hunks instead of making spoonfuls, use parchment baking paper on the cookie sheet... they won't stick and there is no messy pan to wash! 2 HOSPITALITY April Mindy Miller Mona Steffen May Tommie Cochrane Char Plante Carole Mundwiller Joy Downey Barbara Masci June Summer Potluck August Need Volunteers Septmember Terrie Busse Shirley Stafford Delana Stafford October Laura Staben Inez Holt Willene Summerford November Winona Rocha Cindy Worthy December Christmas Luncheon

8 8 You may ask: What does a health tip have to do with an artist? It s what we do the most while painting. We sit for prolonged periods of time and that is not good for us. We need to do things differently so we can feel better and have energy to have the inspiration to create. By sitting so long at a time it can create... Sore shoulders Lower back pain Neck strain which can cause headaches and tension to the shoulders. Sitting for so long decreases some of the circulation to the lower legs and feet and can cause swelling. If you have an injury or ailment it requires blood supply to heal, so prolonged sitting reduces circulation and delays healing. Try to take a deep breath while leaning forward painting. Your breathing becomes shallow which decreases the oxygen to the brain and extremities. There is an easy fix! Something very simple! It s fast, it s easy, and it s free.just stand up more and do a few stretches. Standing will also give you another perspective or view of your art work and you may see that you need to add a little more highlight to an area or something needs to be toned down. Move your painting to different rooms and view it in different lighting. That can really give you a better feeling whether your values and intensities are correct. Here are a few easy stretches that should be done slowly: 1. Stretch your arms to the sky and wiggle your fingers. 2. Roll your shoulders in a circle clockwise and then counter clockwise. 3. Look to the right then look to the left. Look up and then down. Take your right ear to your right shoulder then your left ear to your left shoulder. Please do not roll your neck in a circular motion or that could cause other problems. 4. As you are standing shake one leg and then the other. This will help to get the blood to flow to the lower extremities. The breaks we take don t have to be long but they do have to be frequent to have an impact. If you are a teacher, you might consider having your students stand up every so often. This will help to keep them energized and not feel so tired when the class is over. So let s make it a point to separate ourselves from our chair throughout the day and stand up and stretch. You ll feel much better! 8

11 What is Rosemaling? Rosemaling is the beautiful Norwegian folk painting, which dates from the 17th century. This unique style of painting, with its graceful scrolls, leaves, and flowers, was influenced by the Viking woodcarvings and metalwork of the 9th century, as well as the Acanthus leaf and Baroque style borrowed from Greece and Rome. Rosemaling has been steadily gaining popularity in the United States since the early 1950's.. Vesterheim is a national treasure that explores the diversity of American immigration through the lens of Norwegian-American experience, showcases the best in historic and contemporary Norwegian folk and fine arts. November Annual California Rosemaling Association Convention Radisson Hotel, 6161 W. Centinela Ave., Culver City, CA CA Rosemaling Association PP Field Trip Scandinavian Fair April 16 & 17 Poinsettia Painters would love to meet as a group at the Festival, we will have an interest form at the March meeting so please check your calendars and see which day & time would work into your schedule. This is something you could bring your spouse or friends to! The Scandinavian Festival 2011 to be held Saturday April 16th (10 am -5 pm) and Sunday, 17th, (10 am 4 pm) at California Lutheran University. The Festival is an annual event that provides a full program of Scandinavian activities. In addition to the Scandinavian Marketplace which features vendors with rosemaling, there will be the traditional Festival Stage with folk dancing and music, children's craft booths, the Maypole, a program of cultural presentations, and more. There will be a Scandinavian Old Time Dance from 5 p.m.-8:p.m. Saturday night at the Festival Stage. 11 Meet Bella, owner Cindy Worthy says Bella is a good dog, mostly! She was a recue dog at 6 pounds and is now 70 pounds of love. She is a huge thief. She steals anything she can. She is a girlie-girl she loves shoes, not to wear, but to eat. Clothes, pillows and of course newspapers are a favorite treat. She has also eaten the TV remote, a telephone and many dish cloths, mmmm good!!! Her favorite toy is a tennis ball, which is the only toy that lasts longer than 5 minutes. Thanks, Cindy, she looks like a great family pet, despite her diet! 11
