You can also call Laura on or Jim on Laura Martin and Jim Maroldo Dance Club News Clover Squares of Levy County Williston The Clover Squares members were very busy in March with a banner retrieval at the Ocala Twirlers and a demo at the Foxwood Farms retirement community (both in Ocala). They also hosted two parties, St. Patrick's Day and Easter. For the third year, we performed a demo at the Levy County Fair on April 7th. April 18th was our Hobo Stew and food drive night. Did you know that hobos can square dance? May 2nd will be our Cinco de Mayo dance with a Mexican theme. On June 13th we'll celebrate Flag Day, and we'll be dark July 4th. Easter bonnet contestants are Mary Britten, Art Maruna and Fran George in back row. In front are Margaret Hambly, Karen Callander, Vicki Todd and Laura Yates. All the bonnets were very original but Karin, in her cotton ball bunny hat, won the contest. She also made the chicks on the right. Last December our dance time changed to 2:00 pm. In February our location changed to the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 213 W. Noble Avenue (Hwy 27 Alternate), Williston. If you have questions, call or check our Facebook page. Mignon Craig Dixie Dancers Lake City Fun n Frolic Jacksonville The Fun 'n Frolics graduated three new Advanced Dancers on Wednesday, April 25th. Virginia Bomhold, Chuck and Mary Giera were escorted around the hall by Paul Scott and Russ & Carolyn Ueber and presented to our caller, Jim Cosman. Jim then read their diplomas to them. Our new Advanced Dancers were proud to receive their diplomas welcoming them to the world of Advanced Dancing and to wear their new badges. After the graduation ceremony, we all enjoyed partaking of the snacks and punch. The Fun 'n Frolics will continue to dance through May while Jax Heights Elementary School is open, except for the weeks that Jim is out of town on an Alaskan cruise (May 9th and 16th). 8 Back to Page 1

Gypsy Squares and Square Wheels Combined Camping Weekends The Gypsy Squares will be hosting the weekend of May at the Southern Oaks RV Resort, SE Highway 441, Summerfield, Fl The rally rate is $ Make your own reservations. It will be a 50's theme weekend Friday night. Dress in 50's attire or casual. It will be an old fashion SOCK HOP, a good time to wear those crazy socks if you have them. Everyone had a great time it far exceeded our expectations for a wonderful time. We can t wait until the next cruise. If you purchase ($25) and wear this button, you will not be harassed to participate in any other fundraising efforts for the 2019 Convention. I have my button I think it s a fantastic bargain. Susie Moon - Publicity A Special Appeal for Pull Tabs Each year at the International Camporee, the NSDCA (National Square Dance Campers Association) collects aluminum pull-tabs and donates the money received for the recycled aluminum to the Shriner s Hospitals for Children. The Shriner s hospitals provide much needed medical assistance to any child of need. Children with orthopaedical conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients' ability to pay. Within our square dance camping community, Bill Chesnut s daughter and Ron and Linda Imus grandson have received support from the Shriner s hospital. You can help by saving your pull-tabs (not the entire can), and then giving them to a member of the Gypsy Squares or Square Wheels camping clubs. The collected pull-tabs will be donated at the National Camporee in June Dale Fredrickson and Don MacGregor th National Square Dance Convention in Atlanta, Georgia Activities have already begun in anticipation of a great convention in The location is great for the NEFSARDA dancers so hopefully we can have a big presence in Atlanta. Dancers at Other Activities We have a published author in our dancing community! John Allen of the Moose Promenaders has written a children s book, I d Like a Cat Like That! The book contains 30 pages which have been beautifully illustrated by a local artist, Linda Bigbee. The story is about a cat that does much more than just sleeping and eating. This cat could be a child s best friend, is fun to play with, and does cool things. The book was published in March 2018, and it sold 48 copies in the first month. It is currently available on Amazon.com and can be found by search by the title of the book. The price is $10.00 per copy. 20 Back to Page 1

21 John wrote the text of the book in 2010, but he realized that he needed appropriate illustrations before he could consider the publication of his book. He found his illustrator is a most unusual way. On a winter day in 2011, John took his granddaughter Kayla to a local park. While Kayla was playing, John met a young mother who was at the park with her son Grayson. John learned that this mother was Linda Bigbee, a graphic artist who had studied art at Oklahoma State University. John told Linda about his book, and a partnership was created right at the park on that day. It took several years of collaboration to get the illustrations perfect. Kayla and Grayson served as models for the illustrations of the main children in the book. Writing a book came naturally to John. He was a communications major at Indiana State University where he especially enjoyed creative writing. After the Army and college, John worked as a sales representative in various fields including college textbooks publishing. In his spare time, he dabbled in creative expression projects including writing several unpublished movie scripts and stints as a stand-up comedian. John also worked as a substitute teacher where he enjoyed reading to younger students especially from books that incorporated a rhyming text like Dr. Seuss. This is where the idea of writing a children s book was born. Farewells and Concerns Jenell Garvey - Our square dance community lost one of its special members when Jenell Garvey passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at the Putnam Community Medical Center in Palatka, Florida. Jenell was born in Greensboro, North Carolina and grew up in Arkansas. She moved to Jacksonville in 1976 and then to Satsuma near Palatka ten years ago. Jenell was a very creative and enjoyed crafts, painting and crocheting. Gardening and square dancing were her other pastimes. Jenell liked to stay active. She was a member of the Arlington United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, the Chapter 200 Order of the Eastern Star in Crescent City, Women of the Moose Chapters 1915 (Palatka) and 1495 (Jacksonville), Veteran of Foreign Wars and the Seabreeze Singles Square Dance Club. Her death was preceded by her husbands, Forrest Hall and Norman E. Garvey, Jr. Jenell is survived by 6 children, 18 grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren. Jenell was buried in the Jacksonville National Cemetery. She will be greatly missed. 21 Back to Page 1

22 Jenell on her 70th birthday at the Southeast Georgia Federation dance in Brunswick, Georgia on March 24, 2018, and with her homemade Easter Bonnet at the Seabreeze Singles three days later. Worlie and Lavern Mathis celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary recently. They were married on March 28, 1948 in Folkston, Georgia. We have been told that the following dancers are all doing well now. Cora Lee Garrett of the Seabreeze Singles fell and broke her hip. She had surgery on April 30th. Bill Barker of the Seabreeze Singles and Moose Promenaders had heart surgery in April. Belinda Barker (Bill s wife) of the Seabreeze Singles and Moose Promenaders also had heart surgery in April. Grace Van Frachen of the Mandarin Marauders and Moose Promenaders is recovering from a broken ankle. Bonnie Drake of the Moose Promenaders is now at Community Hospice, 5450 Ramona Blvd, Jacksonville.
