Susie Moon - Publicity A Special Appeal for Pull Tabs Each year at the International Camporee, the NSDCA (National Square Dance Campers Association) collects aluminum pull-tabs and donates the money received for the recycled aluminum to the Shriner s Hospitals for Children. The Shriner s hospitals provide much needed medical assistance to any child of need. Children with orthopaedical conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients' ability to pay. Within our square dance camping community, Bill Chesnut s daughter and Ron and Linda Imus grandson have received support from the Shriner s hospital. You can help by saving your pull-tabs (not the entire can), and then giving them to a member of the Gypsy Squares or Square Wheels camping clubs. The collected pull-tabs will be donated at the National Camporee in June Dale Fredrickson and Don MacGregor th National Square Dance Convention in Atlanta, Georgia Activities have already begun in anticipation of a great convention in The location is great for the NEFSARDA dancers so hopefully Northeast Florida will have a big presence in Atlanta. The 2018 National Handicapable Convention at the Hilton Omni Hotel in Jacksonville, Florida from July 26th to July 28th The first U.S. Handicapable Square Dance Convention (USH) was held in 1988 in Chickasaw, Alabama (a suburb of Mobile). The Convention was started by Dean and Kitty Emery to bring Handicapable Square Dance Clubs together for a convention planned exclusively for the special dancers and their families. The majority of our dancers consist of adults with developmental disabilities who range in age from adults to senior citizens. We also have clubs whose members dance in wheelchairs who do not have developmental disabilities. Anyone who enjoys square dancing and having a good time is welcome to our clubs and to our conventions! Friends, families, volunteers, and other interested people provide support and participate in our activities. The national Conventions are held every other year to allow our clubs sufficient time to raise funds to travel to the Conventions. The USH Convention is most commonly held on the fourth weekend of July (in even numbered years), except when we have to move the convention date in order to get facilities. Jerry and Pam Yerby helped establish the first Western Handicapable Convention in 2001 which meets in odd-number years. Our Conventions are family affairs. Entire families come with their special dancers. Group homes and Arc groups furnish buses for their dancers. Some clubs have even flown from their home area. Everyone looks forward to the Convention as one of the highlights in their lives. We choose hotels that can accommodate our entire convention, including rooms and dance area. This makes it easier on our dancers and their caregivers. We also choose sites that will make outstanding vacations for the attendees. We hope that you will attend a Handicapable Convention and have a great time with your friends, plus feel joy in your heart for this beautiful time square dancing together! The 2018 U.S. Handicapable convention will be held at the Hilton Omni Hotel in beautiful Jacksonville, Florida starting on Thursday evening July 26th with a banquet followed by entertainment by the Rambling Rose Trio. The square dance will begin Friday morning July 27th and will end on 12 Back to Page 1
13 Saturday July 28th. Friday afternoon will have open dancing for everyone, and then we will start the club demos. You will not want to miss these great performances. The evening session will continue with the club demos and finish with open dancing for everyone. Saturday morning has been set aside for sightseeing. Saturday afternoon is devoted to the dangle dances for everyone, followed by a workshop to review and teach a new step. Angels are most welcomed to attend the afternoon session and assist our dancers expand their horizons. Saturday evening is our BIG dance for everyone. With the completions of all of the club demos, the dancers really get into the open dancing with all of their friends of long time and new as well. Last but not the least, we end the convention with the BIG CIRCLE DANCE. Circle Left then Circle Right and form a conga line, winding in tighter and tighter, then unwinding back into the BIG CIRCLE again. Next is the group huddle and ending prayer of good health and safe travels until we meet again. You will never find any more LOVE in any other place in the world! Please come and join us for this special fun! Rick Yates Save Your Wine Bottle Corks! Beckie Burkett of the Moose Promenaders has asked us to save our natural wine bottle corks (not synthetic corks) for the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, of which she is a member. The purposes of the clubs are to further education in gardening, horticulture, botany, floral design, landscape design, environmental awareness, conservation of natural resources, civic beautification, nature studies, and to instill in our youth the love of gardening and the environment. Beckie s club is collecting the natural corks with the intention of recycling them. You can give the corks to Beckie at a Moose Promenader dance. Marilyn Scott Bill Chesnut Mjanescott@bellsouth.net Billchesnut4@gmail.com Editor s note I went on the last Cruisin with Bob 4 cruise (April 2018). It was a truly wonderful experience due to the camaraderie with the other dancers and the fine calling of Bill Chesnut. I have been on a lot of cruises in my lifetime, and this was my all-time favorite. Carnival was a lot better on this cruise than my earlier cruises with Carnival. I will be going on Cruisin with Bob 5. I suggest that you join us for a great time.
