6 Sokol Detroit Unit Meeting Minutes May 1, 2018 President, Sr. Renata Greene, called the meeting to order at 7:01PM. Twenty members attended at Sokol Center. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. A moment of silence was held for former member, Mary Smahay. Correspondence: Newsletters were received from Sokol Greater Cleveland and Sokol St. Louis. Sr. Maryann Fiordelis read a letter of resignation from Sokol Detroit members, Br. Allen and Sr. Mary Cushing. They will soon transfer their membership to another Sokol unit. Applications for Membership: Sr. Melanie Mily interviewed Kristi Brandon and recommended her for Sokol Detroit membership. Members approved her membership. Sr. Mily received a request from Jim Johnston, who is interested in Sokol Detroit membership. It was recommended that Mr. Johnston attend upcoming Sokol functions to meet other Sokol Detroit members and to fulfill the two-function requirement for membership. First Vice President: Sr. Carol Brandon thanked the delegates who represented Sokol Detroit at last week s American Sokol XXI Convention, especially Br. Alex and Sr. Meg Novacek for their extensive work on the 2018 ASO Bylaws and Operating Budget committees. Treasurer: Sr. Ann Marie Hurych was excused. Sr. Carol Brandon read the April 2018 balances. The 2017 Annual Report was distributed. Educational Director: Sr. Diana Balint reported on the free website, Project Gutenberg, which started digitizing books in The site now has over 56,000 books available for downloading or reading online, and no fee or registration is required. Included in the online catalog are beautifully illustrated Czech fairy tales. Go to: BOI: Sr. Sharon Stanek reported on the successful Easter camp, which was attended by twenty gymnasts. Sr. Mily assisted. The Sokol Detroit Gymnastical/recital will be held at Sokol Center, Friday, June 1, 6:00PM. Four Sokol Detroit gymnasts will attend the Northeastern District competition at Sokol Greater Cleveland, June The BOI is again asking for help with coaching the children s gymnastic classes. UPC: Br. Novacek reported on the Center and Camp repairs/maintenance projects. The Center clubroom is currently being updated. The Seidel cottage is still available for purchase. There will be an article in the Sokol Detroit News regarding camp clutter. There was discussion on the possibility of moving the former Center double oven to the Camp. The next meeting of the UPC will be held at the Camp on Friday, May 11. Czech-Slovak Festival: Br. Larry and Sr. Marsha Swinkey reported on the 2018 Festival, held this year on July Flyers are coming in this week and will be published in the Sokol Detroit News. Complimentary tickets are available from the Swinkeys, and they are encouraging members to pass them out to friends. Br. Swinkey reported on the possibility that, instead of renting a tent for the Festival this year, Sokol Detroit purchases a tarp with two sides, a one-time-only charge, to attach to the back of the clubroom, thus utilizing the clubroom and opening thirty parking spaces. After much discussion, the members present voted to continue renting the large tent for the parking lot and not using the clubroom or changing the admission area. Br. Swinkey also asked if we could improve on the sound system in the parking lot, as it is difficult getting the sound to the outside speaker. It was recommended that we consult with an expert microphone technician to solve this problem. Page 6

7 Sokol Detroit News: Sr. Heidi Turchan asked Sr. Greene if a monthly newsletter is necessary. Members decided that it is indeed important to publish monthly. Sr. Susan Bares asked that perhaps members could submit personal notable events, news about children/grandchildren, possibly a Cook s Corner, as were included in past Sokol Detroit newsletters. Sr. Balint noted that every issue of the Sokol Detroit News is archived at the Czech/Slovak Museum in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Scholarship Committee: Br. Bruce Singley announced the Scholarship Committee 2018 Geranium Sale. Delivery of the flowers will be Monday, May 14, at Sokol Center. The Scholarship Committee Pancake Breakfast will be held preceding the Cottage Owners meeting on Sunday, May 27, 8:00-9:30AM. Activities Committee: Br. Novacek reported that communications regarding Sokol Detroit events will be sent out four to six weeks prior to each event via Sokol Detroit News and an blast. It was recommended that one flyer or mailing includes the entire activity list. Br. Novacek requests that members begin now getting their teams together for the July 28, 6:30PM, Trivia Contest. A Potluck Breakfast will be held on Sunday, June 10, followed by the Kids Fishing Clinic. Anthony Cortis has volunteered to be the fishing instructor for the Clinic. American Sokol XXI Convention: Br. Alex and Sr. Meg Novacek reported on the successful ASO Convention held in Cleveland, Ohio, April Sr. Novacek read the summary report of the Convention that she and Br. Novacek prepared. The report summarized: 1) Executive Board members elected; 2) Bylaws Changes; 3) Four-Year Budget; 4) General topics covered. Sr. Novacek encouraged units and districts to secure copies of the Standard Operating Procedures for their files. They are available on the American Sokol Organization website. Go to Backrooms, click on to the Administrative link. The password is admin. All SOPs can then be accessed as a.zip file. If one is interested in accessing the BOI link, the password is boi. Sr. Fiordelis had the honor of being this year s Convention Chair. She noted that it is most important that an official Parliamentarian be available for the 2022 Convention, which will be held in Texas. Sr. Bares encouraged members to attend future National Conventions, as it is a rewarding experience. Sr. Greene also thanked Br. and Sr. Novacek for the many hours of work that they did for this year s Convention. Sr. Balint received a perspective of the Statement and Purpose of the Sokol Museum and Library. New Business for the Good of the Unit: Suggested ways of improving Sokol Detroit communication, perhaps events be listed on the Sokol Detroit Facebook Page. Br. Rome Milan, Sokol Fort Worth, is asking units for donations for the traveling Czech and Slovak Museum display. The April 2018 minutes were approved as submitted. The meeting was adjourned at 8:54PM. The next meeting will be held at Sokol Camp on Tuesday, June 5. Cordially submitted, Rose Wiggle, Co-Recording Secretary Page 7
