October 2017 Fairfield, CA Friends for fun, Safety & Knowledge CA2K CHAPTER DIRECTOR S BECKY & PAUL CARROLL Onward and Upward!! It seems as though I am writing almost the same note as I did last month as Paul and I just returned from our trip to Mammoth Lakes attending the California District Rally. On our way there Paul, Mike Ward, and I had a very interesting time with the different climate and temperatures. It was a balmy 60+ when we started out Thursday morning in Suisun. By the time we made it to Placerville, we were putting on our rain togs as the clouds looked ominous. Of course, we got rain going up Highway 50, but soon got out of it once we turned off and onto Highway 88/89. By the time we were going over Monitor Pass, we were getting some snow flurries, but were looking at blue sky and sun going into Bridgeport. However, the temperatures were still dropping, so more layers kept getting added! It was very good that we did put on the layers, because just after Lee Vining we drove into some serious snow, big flakes and all. It was the first time that we all had issues with our windshields collecting snow. I had to use my gloved left hand Welcome to Chapter CA2K of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association (GWRRA), the world's largest single-marquee social organization for owners and riders of Honda Gold Wing motorcycles. We are located in Fairfield, Ca. which is nestled between the Mendocino National Forest to the north, Pacific Ocean to the west, Sacramento and Lake Tahoe to the east, the San Francisco Bay area to the south and nestled next to the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma, we are truly Gold Wing Country, Some of the greatest riding roads in the US. We are dedicated to our Motto: Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge! GWRRA members enjoy the freedom of belonging to a Non-Profit, Non- Religious and Non- Political organization
to work as a windshield wiper in order to see!!!! We arrived just in time to cozy up to the fire in the condo and watch the snow outside! Bill and Rene Johnson came by car and told us about seeing a group of Harley riders with about 3-4 inches of snow on their helmets, waiting for a tow truck to take their machines down the mountain. They made by Thursday late afternoon (I think), but Bill and Lea Hogan weren t as lucky getting to Mammoth. They were going to leave later in the day and therefore didn t beat the snow. They did show up on Friday though and joined in on their first District Rally. CA2K had a total of seven members come to Mammoth and I am very thankful for their participation. I want to thank Lennie for taking over the duties of running our Chapter Gathering. Once again, he did an exceptional job!!! He did tell me that he doesn t want to make it a habit though. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Tuesday Round Table Pizza Night (Oct. 10) and then our October Chapter Gathering (Oct. 28)! *********************************************************************************************************************************** wing nut RECEPIENT OF THE MONTH!! Well, does this picture look familiar? Well, actually the person of interest should be familiar. If I am correct, the fingers, either mean it is number Eight, or number four for this month s recipient. I am pretty sure, that it may be number Four, just for this year. So it seeems like our esteemed Steve Palatino, has been successfully at it again. From what I hear, sometime during the meeting, before his nomination, someone mentioned riding Can Am s with their three wheels. Then it was mentioned that maybe Karen might like to try one. The comment that followed from our current (again) of the prized Wing Nut, proceeded to mention that Well, she already rides on three wheels, so why not something that only has three! Wow, not too many of us are that courageous, but thanks again Steve, for taking the bullet for all the rest of us. So, let s keep our eyes and ears open, to see what Steve can come up with next month. Keep up the great work Steve, we appreciate your being the front man! By the way, is Karen, holding up 4 fingers, to show the number of times Steve has won the Wing Nut, or is she slapping him on the back of the head? So watch and see who may end up here next month. ********************************************************************************************************************************** OOPS!!! This one from your Editor s Desk A man boards a plane with six children. After they got settled in their seats, a woman sitting across the aisle leans over to him and asks, Are all those children yours? He replies, No, I work for a condom company. These are customer complaints!
BAD GROUND I experienced electrical problems on the way to the District Rally at Mammoth. After searching Goldwing forums it seems the issue I had is common. The dash turn indicator lights were on all the time. They would flash when the brakes were applied. My tail lights were very dim with no brake lights or turn lights. The front turn lights worked. Under the seat there are two big plugs on the harness. The one closest to the back of bike/just below the passenger backrest is the problem. The green ground wire and or the contacts in the plug goes bad. The fix is to run a new wire from one side of the plug to the other. Some people have had success cleaning the contacts. It just matters what condition the contacts are in. I hope this helps if anyone else experiences the same problem. *********************************************************************************************************************************** Now, how about a little de ja vu, Some things can always bear repeating occasionally. This one should bring back some memories! Big Mo s Motorcycle Safety What If s Do you see it? What do you see? How close is it really? These are questions that as motorcyclists, we need to address every time we go for a ride on our bikes. Most of us spend a lot of time honing our skills and proficiency to demonstrate our abilities of riding a motorcycle. We practice quick stops, we practice swerves to avoid a hazard. Progressive braking with a controlled squeeze of the brake lever. Smooth throttle operation through the corners. But, how much time do we practice visualizing possible scenarios of What if s! How much effort is put into gathering quickly accurate information from the environment around us? Is that car going to turn left? How much room is there between that car and the curb? How far is it to the stoplight that is turning yellow? Is that gravel in the road, or just
rough asphalt? Are those tar snakes going to be slippery? Wonder if that car driver really sees me? These and many more questions are continuously being processed in the mind s eye by experienced riders that know the importance of not only the value of physical skills, but the preparedness should that What If scenario rear its ugly head. The MSF teaches the SEE (Search, Evaluate, and Execute) strategy. Searching with constant eye movement is a very important skill to become proficient at as a motorcyclist. Actively engaged in your environment, searching for any possible threat to your safety as a rider. Prioritize any danger, and then take action to avoid the hazard or obstacle. Keeping your eye focus up as far as you can see, with occasional glances to road hazards can give the novice, or even experienced rider, less of a feeling of speed and therefore added confidence on his or hers overall riding ability as a motorcyclist. Try not to fixate on any one object for more than half a second. This should give you enough time should you need it, to respond to a hazard, not react, and thereby allowing a more relaxed confidant operation of the motorcycle. Avoiding stiff arms and a death grip on the handlebars, in a panic situation, always will give the rider more control and smoother operation of the motorcycle. All these visual cues need to be processed in multi-seconds. So, remember you must stay sharp, alert, and ready for anything that might come your way. Having a set route can help avoid confusion. But when traveling to unfamiliar areas, a pre-plan of the route can eliminate distractions and help the rider, and co-rider to concentrate on their safety. Plan to ride during daylight hours when sunlight aids your vision, and shadows are at a minimum. Your vision is the most important tool you have to accurately ride your motorcycle. Protect those eyes with tinted glasses or visor during the day and clear eye protection when the sun begins to fade. Remember your cornering lines when in the twisties. Outside, inside, outside path of travel will give you more time, space, and traction control. Your eye sight will help you see the radius, camber, and any hazards that might present themselves. Watch the fog line to determine how quickly the curve bends, and be ready for the unexpected around blind corners. If you do all this proficiently, you are on your way to many years of riding enjoyment. You will gain the confidence to control your motorcycle, when, where, and how you like. Remembering that What If s can happen anytime to anyone, and the better we practice our mental skills, along with the physical skills, the better we will be able to respond in a manner that allows us to ride another day. This article was borrowed from Rocky Fagundes CA-2S CE in 2014 ***************************************************************************************************************************** GREETINGS, I changed my motorcycle horn to gunshot sounds. People get out of the way much faster now. Gone are the days when girls used to cook like their mothers. Now they drink like their fathers. Old age is coming at a really bad time. When I was a child, I thought "Nap Time" was a punishment. Now, as a grownup, it feels like a small vacation.
SEPTEMBER CHAPTER GATHERING PIC S Meanderings of an old mind From the meandering mind of Sue Neander *The location of your mailbox shows you how far away from your house you can be in a robe before you start looking like a mental patient. *My therapist said that my narcissism causes me to misread social situations. I'm pretty sure she was hitting on me. *My 60-year kindergarten reunion is coming up soon, and I m worried about the 175 pounds I ve gained since then. *I always wondered what the job application is like at Hooters. Do they just give you a bra and say, Here, fill this out? *Denny s has a slogan, If it s your birthday, the meal is on us. If you re in Denny s and it s your birthday, your life sucks! *The pharmacist asked me my birth date again today. I m pretty sure she s going to get me something. *I think it's pretty cool how Chinese people made a language entirely out of tattoos.
GOLD ANGELS MOTORCYCLE DRILL TEAM NEEDS YOUR HELP!! To all GWRRA Chapter CA2K Members and Associates, and also anyone else reading this newsletter. This is a request for assistance for the drill team that we all know and appreciate. In the past, GWRRA has carried the liability insurance for these teams. With the restructuring of GWRRA, All Drill Teams must now carry their own Liability Insurance. The insurance for the Gold Angels, cost them in the area of $1,700 per year. They are attempting to raise this, by putting out a Gold Angels Calendar and any other ways that they can. The two pictures enclosed are the front cover and the December picture. There are many great pictures inside. Those who know members of the team, also know, that each rider owns and maintains his own bike, they purchase all their own clothes, equipment and anything else necessary for their performance. Plus they practice and train several times a month. Then when they travel to perform, they pay their own expenses. So you can see that they go to a lot of time, expense and effort to provide top notch performance at all kind of events, rallies and conventions. - The cost of these calendars is $20 each, which covers the printing and a good portion for the team. There will be a calendars at our next meeting, to be provided as some kind of a prize and so you can see the entire quality and the pictures. This request is coming from your Chapter Director and your Newsletter Editor. This is not coming from the Gold Angels, but they will appreciate any and all support that each of us would like to provide. Please feel free to contact me, Paul Carroll, (paul_carroll@comcast.net), cell, if any questions, or to provide a donation. I will collect donations from now until our October meeting, then forward all to the Gold Angels. Or, you may contact Trent Reid, (Cell, , or , trere9@aol.com) Please help in any manner that you can. We need to assist them in this effort, so they can continue to provide the excellent shows.
CA DISTRICT DIRECTOR S REVIEW by NANCY & bob CLARK September has been an awesome month starting with Wing Ding 39 in Grapevine, TX offering great weather, a wonderful community, and lots of fun and activities with friends. Once home we made final preparations for our CA District Rally at Mammoth Mountain Ice Age -We re Back. Little did I know that we were bringing on the Ice Age with snow and blizzard conditions? Thursday was a rough travel day for many, but were glad all arrived safely. The weekend was fabulous, despite the cold weather and a few incidents (no injuries), there was the opportunity for some great rides on Saturday and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. The Gold Angels performed with the AZ Dill team for an outstanding show. It was amazing how they could put together such a great show with only a few hours to prepare. We always love to gather with our Gold Wing friends, and it s even better when we are in a spectacular place of beauty the sun shining on the snow-covered mountains and trees was breath-taking. We thank all of the chapters that supported the rally. We had 208 registered. Chapters with over 75% of their members registered were, CA1L (77%), CA2N (78%), CA1V (84%), CA2A (125%). There were 5 more chapters with over 50%...THANK YOU. It takes many people to put on a rally and without them it would not happen. At Closing I was remiss in thanking some very critical people all of my Team and all of those who helped out in many ways: ticket sales, registration, door prize, WINGO, instructors, ice cream servers the list goes on. If you helped out in any way.thank YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! A special thank you to CA1A for financially sponsoring the Ice Cream Social Thank you! We are heading out to Ruidoso, NM for the NM District Rally more FUN to be had can t wait for the pajama party. October is loaded with more opportunities to have fun with Wingers. We have California rallies with 1M (14 th ), 1V (15 th ), 2R & 1F (21 st ) ending the month with Arizona District Rally in Lake Havasu, AZ (27 th -29 th ). We look forward to seeing you all there. As the weather starts cooling down, enjoy the riding opportunities and, as always, dress appropriately and BE SAFE ENJOY THE RIDE! Bear hugs Bob & Nancy
REGION F NEWS FROM REGION F UN DIRECTORS ANDY & SHERRY SMITH Just as the sands of the hour glass Can it be that October is just around the corner? Love the fall with its, turning leaves, cooler temps (for many of us), sweaters, and pumpkins (even some snow already)! October also means we are only a few months away from the new organizational structure going into effect. So as the title of the article states, Where do we go from here? As a Region and as Districts we still have some regular business housekeeping left to do before the Big Change. We recently sent a get prepared out to all the District Directors on the Annual Renewal of the Chapter Charters. The District Directors should be providing details to all of their Chapters of what needs to happen next. That said, it probably is a good idea that the Chapters and Districts start taking those initial looks at their End of the Year financials, and be ready or ahead of the game to get them filed on time. We will put out additional information and we are confident that the National Director of Finance will also be providing guidance on all that will need to be done with the new changes. We encourage everyone to continue to support the organization by helping each Chapter Director and District Director as well as each other as we enter a new era in the organization. These volunteers (Chapter & District Directors and their TEAMs) will need your support. (A pat on the back goes a long way) If there are questions, please contact your Region counterpart (at least until 31 December) and the TEAM will do everything in their power to get you a proper answer. We are still getting some questions as to the status of the 2018 Rally that was announced at the final Region F Rally in Tucson. As you will note in this newsletter, it is still on track to happen as we planned. Please note, the 2018 Rally will NOT be a Region F Rally, even though the membership in our former Region will play a very important part in its success. (see the Rally Flyer later in the newsletter) We also announced a Name That Rally competition. The details are below, and should be getting passed out to everyone by the Districts and Chapters. This also is NOT a Region F only competition. The members of Region J and Region I will also be participating. So let s come up with a real Zinger for a Rally Name!
Here are the basic rules: * The Prize * If your chapter's submission wins the contest, each member of the chapter will win a comp registration to the 2018 Rally in Utah. (You must be on the chapter's ARL, and a current GWRRA member) At the meetings in October, each chapter team & members (within Regions J, F, and I) will come up with a Rally Name and submit that name with your chapter affiliation to your District Director. (NLT ) Between and the DDs and their teams (within their respective Regions) will select one of the submitted names (from the Chapters) and forward it to their Region Director. (Ensure the submitting Chapter is noted when forwarding.) Each of the Region Directors will pick at least one, but no more than two names submitted by their DDs and forward them to Andy and Sherry Smith NLT (Ensure the submitting District/Chapter is noted when forwarding.) Chapters within Region J Chapters within Region I Chapters within Region F From to DDs for Region J DDs for Region I DDs for Region F From to Region Director J Region Director I Region Director F From to Open voting for Rally name starts on and runs until The Names submitted by the Regions will be placed on an open web based survey for the final selection by the membership. The final results will be published no later than As we noted, the days are getting shorter, the nights definitely cooler and the general weather is getting less and less rideable as we get closer to the end of the year. We want to see all of you at the 2018 Rally in Zermatt. There is still one district rally to be had for this year (the rally for NM should already be done by the time you read this). Arizona s rally is October 27 29; Lake Havasu City, AZ (Welcome to the Beach). Please support them and have a wonderful time together as Friends and Family! As we stated last month, we are still here to answer any questions you may have, at least until December 31. Take care & until next month, Ride Safe Have Fun! Andy & Sherry Smith

Body Hurts Again, from Lesley A gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor's office and said that her body hurt wherever she touched it. "Impossible!" says the doctor. "Show me." The redhead took her finger, pushed on her left shoulder and screamed, then she pushed her elbow and screamed even more. She pushed her knee and screamed; likewise she pushed her ankle and screamed. Everywhere she touched made her scream. The doctor said, "You're not really a redhead, are you? "Well, no" she said, "I'm actually a blonde." "I thought so," the doctor said. "Your finger is broken." ********************************************************************************************************************************* Three Little Pigs One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her class. She came to the part of the story where the first pig was trying to accumulate the building materials for his home. She read, "And so the pig went up to the man with the wheel barrow full of straw and said, "Pardon me sir, but may I have some of that straw to build my house?" The teacher paused then asked the class, "And what do you think that man said?" One little boy raised his hand and said, "I think he said 'Holy Sh*t! A talking pig!'" The teacher was unable to teach for the next 10 minutes. ************************************************************************************************************************************** The Veterinarian One Sunday, in counting the money in the weekly offering, the pastor of a small Florida church found a pink envelope containing $1000. It happened again the next week. The following Sunday, he watched as the offering was collected and saw a little old lady put the distinctive pink envelope in the plate. This went on for weeks until the pastor, overcome by curiosity, approached her. "Ma'am, I couldn't help but notice that you put $1,000 a week in the collection plate," he stated. "Why yes," she replied, "every week my son sends me money, and I give some of it to the church." The pastor replied, "That's wonderful, how much does he send you?" The old lady said, "$10,000 a week." The pastor was amazed. "Your son is very successful; what does he do for a living?" "He is a veterinarian," she answered. "That is an honorable profession," the pastor said. "Where does he practice?" The old lady said proudly, "In Nevada. He has two cat houses in Las Vegas and one in Reno."
