All have hopes that this year will have a big turnout. HOPE doesn t bring in the new dancers! It s up to each and EVERY club member to take responsibility for filling the class with new dancers. It s all about enrollment; sharing your love of Dancing in such a way that will make others want to join you. you must GIVE IT AWAY. You really don t own something until you can give it away. When you make a concerted effort to share yourself, a lot more happens than just getting another class member, I promise your life will be enriched many times over when you do. Try it! Make a promise to yourself (and to me if you want some support) to bring a least one new dancer this year (you have to ask more than one person, you know that). I don t have to tell you how important it is to a club s survival, and square dancing in general, to have a continuous stream of new dancers it s crucial to our survival as a club, community and culture! So go out there and win one for the.never mind you know what to do! & P.S. Class starts on September 21 st at seven fifteen, and is open for new dancers two weeks, first time is FREE! Remember, we need angels, so plan to come to class, enjoy the evening out, have some fun and get some exercise too!

September Birthdays Nancy Welch 4 th I get by with a little help from my friends John Lennon. Sunshine is about keeping our friends in our hearts, celebrating their joys, consoling when needed and to cheer them on. Kindness is a great healer, keep our friends in your thoughts. If they need it, say a prayer, send them a card or give a call to show you care. Lisa Evans has an infected finger and has been on antibiotics for some time now. She was in the hospital recently for the infection. Bob Alexander is still having some issues and undergoing tests to determine why he s losing blood. Charlie Sanderson 10 th Margie Zingg 12 th Bob Benigar 19 th Randy Gibson 30 th Happy Anniversary Linda & Frank Bezzina 18 th We re sad to report that recently the Hayworth family lost Heather s father suddenly. Our condolences to Heather, Mike and the children. When you hear of someone who is not well, needs some cheer, has a special occasion or a big achievement to share, give a ring to Margie Zingg at (951) or drop a line to Linda Bezzina at franklindadance@gmail.com or (951) Have a great month! Margie & Linda I ve discovered I always have choices and sometimes it s only a choice of attitude. Notes from Rosalie At our July Installation dance Margie Zingg decorated in the red, white and blue theme. Students Sherry and Greg West were our greeters. Along with Ron Morris, Chris Burns, and Muriel Greenwood we had students Sylvia Burk, Judy Wagner and Charlene Willem helping with setting up the food tables and cleaning up. Kudos go out to all the Twirlers who brought an abundance of tasty food. Help from all the students was really appreciated. Rosalie If you would like to help at a dance call Rosalie or just pop in and she ll put you to work I ve discovered I always have choices sometimes it s only a choice of attitude. 3 Hello everyone, I hope you are all enjoying the weather, I know I am! But this month I don t mean this in any way religious at all because I m not, but I saw a quote that I found very applicable to my life this coming month; faith is not knowing what the future holds but who holds it. To me that says that you need to have faith that no matter what you chose to do, it will be the right thing for your life. This spurs from the fact that this past month I was forced to make the decision to move to Riverside. Away from my parents and everything I know, due to the fact that gas will soon be over four dollars probably and the way things are going with my health the most cost effective choice was for me to move to an apartment with three roommates that I do not know in Riverside. Although this is something I really do not want to do, I know it is something that I must do and I must have faith and trust that this is the best thing for my future and my life. I know many of us are going through drastic life changes for any number of reasons. So this month I just wanted to take the time to remind everyone that no matter what life throws at us, your choice will ultimately be the right choice. I hope you all enjoy the remainder of the summer and take everything as it comes. Love, Ellie Our Scatter Visitation to Cypress Twirlers on July 8 th found Sue and Randy Gibson H Muriel Greenwood H Marie Schmidt H Steve Falgout H Rick Jones having a fun time dancing to Ben Goldberg. 4 Official Visitation for September 2011 Saturday, September 3 rd Boys n Berries E Romp n Stomp Dance Buena Park Community Center 8150 Knott Ave., Buena Park Featuring Tony Oxendine Calling Linda Ashby Cueing *Please wear your club outfit or Red, White & Blue* Visitation Vibes The July visitations were pretty good with Twirlers traveling to Garden Grove, Riverside and Rancho Cucamonga, all dancing to callers from out of our area and quite enjoyable. For those Twirlers collecting autographs in their Century Books, they collected more signatures! Carpooling to visitations serves a couple of purposes. First, it gets several of us together and we get to know each other better; secondly, it helps to get some dancers out, that may not otherwise be able to go. And last, but not least, it saves money for all participants. A reminder to carpool a passengers, the courteous & polite thing to do is to offer the driver gas money. Scatter Visitation Friday, September 23 Whirlaways Welcome Autumn Dance Nasser Shukayr calling Rey Garza cueing Rounds 7:30 Squares 8:00 10:30 The Barn 1950 Sycamore Drive Ÿ San Marcos These are visitations that count for the additional entries into the Visitation Pot drawing. Be sure to look for visitation sign-up sheets at the club dances and Wednesday workshop & class. You can also give Andy or Lorie a call at See you in a square! A great turn out to Rancho Cucamonga B-n-B s Crazy Hat / Shirt Dance on July 23 rd August-September 201 Page 4

Eye Contact Who gives it, who doesn't, and why. By John Brant Our Summer Workshops & the Phase Two classes will continue through Sept 14 th The workshop begins 6:15pm and now includes one low level round. Good for our round dancers Our Phase 2 class starts at 7:15 and goes to 8:30. After each class, there is a short meeting for class members to ask questions and receive some follow-up info. It s never too early to be talking to your friends and neighbors or heck, even strangers about our next class for new dancers. Our next Phase One class will begin on September 21 st. Tell everyone you know we have a new class starting and what fun they ll have and friends they will make. We have flyers, so if you want flyers to hand out, please ask a board member. Any questions you may have, please call Rosalie at See you on Wednesday night! 3 CD set of Phase I class videos are available for $ Check with Andy Abeles on Wednesday nights or call him at Many thanks to our Class Angels for this past year, your help to our new dancers has been invaluable to them. We hope to see you back on September 21 st Bring a friend and share the fun and enjoyment of square dance with them! Square Dancers fall into three categories when it comes to giving other dancers eye contact. 1. Eye contact is given most of the time. 2. Eye contact is never given. 3. Eye contact is sometimes given. The questions that first come up are: 1. Who cares? 2. Is there any importance to it at all? 3. Do good Square Dancers give more eye contact than poor dancers? 4. Do Square Dancers in general give less eye contact than other dancers in other forms of dancing? 5. Are dancers who give eye contact more "people oriented" and have more fun than those who don't give eye contact? There have not been any scientific studies done on the subject so my answers will be based on my own observations: (1) The answer to the first question is; very few. Most dancers have never thought about the subject. It has been only recently I have been observing dancers for eye contact. (2) The answer to the second question is; probably very little. It is however interesting to note the differences in dancers and why those differences exist. (3) The answer to the third question is; no. I have seen many great dancers who give no eye contact. I have also seen many poor dancers give lots of eye contact. There is no correlation between eye contact and dance ability. (4) The answer to the fourth question is; yes, probably. It is difficult to compare Square Dancing to other forms of dancing because Square Dancing is much different than most forms of dancing. When comparing Square Dancers to Contra Dancers I am told by Contra Dancers that Contra Dancers give much more eye contact than Square Dancers. I suspect dancers in other forms of dancing give more eye contact also. Square Dancing is more technical in nature than other dancing. Many dancers concentrate on what they are doing and don't want the distraction of "interacting" with other dancers by giving eye contact. (5) The answer to the fifth question is; it appears to be the case. People who give a lot of eye contact tend to be more people oriented. They seem to be more out-going. People who give very little or no eye contact are more reserved. Perhaps they feel their eyes will reveal something to others. It is a little risky giving eye contact because sometimes you can be disappointed with the response of others. If you are dancer who gives no eye contact, then give it a try sometime. Eye contact is not practical during all of the moves. Any move where dancers are standing beside one another, such as in an Ocean Wave, eye contact is not practical. Moves where you are facing one another, such as Grand Right and Left or Allemande Left, offer good opportunities for eye contact. The feeling of looking someone in the eyes and seeing them smile and look at you is a good one. After all, isn't feeling good part of the whole idea of dancing? If that is the only benefit of eye contact then perhaps my answer to question #2 should be changed to YES. August-September 201 Page 5

Thank You Sandy Smith for upgrading our club boy badges. We appreciate your ideas and help CLUB JACKETS are in and have been delivered to everyone that pre-ordered. We have a few additional jackets available for purchase & ready to take home. Please see Andy or Lorie for yours HELP WANTED we are in need of a CCHA Club Representative and a Club Historian. See Sue or Lorie to volunteer or for more info. All club members are welcome to attend the Board Meetings. We meet on the 3 rd Wednesday of the month from 4-6 pm in the downstairs card room at the Lodge (before the workshop & class). Our bank, BBVA Compass has a program for non-profit organizations called Compass for your Cause in which they pay the Club for every person that opens a new account, (with new funds) and mentions that they want to associate the new account to the Canyon Lake Twirlers Compass for your Cause, BBVA will pay the Club a $50 royalty payment for each supporter who opens a new BBVA Compass consumer checking account. The club may also earn 0.25% of the purchase prices when its supporters use their BBVA Compass Visa Check Card and signs for their purchases. This is a benefit the bank offers and costs us, the club and us as individuals, nothing! Please consider opening an account at BBVA. More info is available on our website, or check with the bank. LINE DANCE is still going strong with Diana Gallagher. Tuesday s 4:30 6:00 for beginners and Wednesday s 3:00 5:00 for easy intermediate/intermediate in the Holiday Bay room at the Lodge. Line dancing is great cardio exercise and tons of fun. REMINDER.. Summer is a busy time with many activities to distract our dancers. Please put the Wednesday workshop/class, Sunday dances and club visitations on your calendars and try to participate if you are in town. We can coordinate a man s shirt and/or tie to complete your look be prepared for lots of compliments! Our website has a full page dedicated to Twirler s dance & class videos. They are usually uploaded within a day of Andy shooting them. A great tool for class members to review what was taught each week. us at canyonlaketwirlers@gmail.com with comments or suggestions. Be sure to visit the website anytime, day or night at: Good Reasons to dance Social Aspects Square Dancing & Contra Dancing are great ways to meet people in a non-threatening, relaxed social atmosphere. You never know who you are going to meet. Lifelong friendships are formed, and many have met the love of their life. There are clubs for singles, couples, the handicapable, gays & lesbians, campers, and youth, although usually everybody is welcome at all clubs. 2. Healthy Environment Square Dance, Round Dance & Contra Dance clubs are smoke and alcohol free. 3. Stress Relief Since these 3 dance forms, Square Dancing, Round Dancing, & Contra Dancing, are all led by a leader giving commands, you become so focused on the task at hand that your other mental worries are forgotten, at least for a couple of hours. 4. Cardiovascular Fitness Dancing is a safe way to exercise. The level of exertion is up to each participant. You can rev it up for a high intensity workout or take it easy for a relaxing, yet beneficial workout. Dancing regularly can lead to a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, and an improved cholesterol profile. 5. Body & Brain Boost Square, Round, & Contra dancers react to calls as they are given. This forces the body and brain to be tightly coordinated. A number of the calls are memorized which keeps the brain sharp. 6. Calorie Burn Dancing burns between 200 and 400 calories every 30 minutes of dancing. That s equivalent to walking or riding a bike. August-September 201 Page 6

CALLER SPOTLIGHT On Cliff Simpson Cliff began his Square Dance career in 1960 in a little town outside Jacksonville, Florida. Back then, only ten lessons and you were an expert. In 1969, after showing an interest in the choreography and learning how callers move the dancers around, he had a microphone shoved into his hand and the rest is history. Cliff has called from beginners through Challenge 3A. He believes you meet the nicest people Square dancing. That's where he met Peggy so it must be true. Cliff has called in 43 States, Canada, Mexico and Japan. Cliff joined the US Marine Corps in 1964 and rose through the enlisted ranks, received a Commission and retired as a Major. He is also retired from the California Courts and now calls full time. He teaches for the Riverside Single Swingers and the Palm Springs Boots in Squares. He believes Square Dancing is only 0ne percent talent and 99 percent fun. Cliff often calls with one of his good friends, Brent Lively. Every time I ve been to one of their joint dances it s a blast watching them their wild & crazy hats. Cliff also teams up with other callers to donate their time for the Breast Cancer dance. When he s calling on his own, he is well known for calling a great dance and dancers come from far & wide to attend his dances. Occasionally, you may be fortunate enough to dance the Grand Colonel Spin that he s well known for. BEGINNING SQUARE DANCE CLASS SEPTEMBER 21, :00 8:15 PM CANYON LAKE LODGE WHO S IN MY SQUARE?
