1 Published by the Canadian Tenpin Federation, Inc. Fédération Canadienne des Dix-Quilles, Inc. April 2013 (Editor's Note: Actually, May 2nd - two days later than planned - our apologies) Positive Feedback! Feedback from readers towards the New Look of the Connection in February was very positive throughout the bowling community. Our team has had the opportunity to recap, and learn from our mistakes; each and every issue will be a learning experience and we invite ideas from our readers. We appreciate all the material our reporters are supplying to our readers, but we are short on news from the West Coast. If there is anyone who is interested in supplying the CTF Connection with material from the British Columbia area, we urge you to contact us. The CTF Connection now has a Facebook page! The Connection has set up a Facebook page; CTF Connection Keeping Bowlers Connected Coast to Coast. Look up the page next time you are on Facebook and like it. We update often with stories of bowlers around the country. What do social media avenues mean to the Canadian Tenpin Federation? To get the answer we contacted CTF president Cathy Innes from British Columbia. Cathy said; Such a big question deserves a big answer but I will keep it short. Communication is always an issue with any non-profit organization with no extra funding in Canada. We have such a large country and we need to communicate better. Social Media helps us do this. We have to embrace the social media platform with a "listen and inform" attitude - then we will see results. The Social Media platform will enable individuals to create, join and grow our groups around issues they care about. This will make it engaging and deepen relationships. We are beginning to engage in communities across the country with online conversation and information, therefore we are reaching more people than ever before and using less effort in doing so. We can communicate in both Languages so no one is left out. It really is just the beginning step to grow our presence in the world of bowling. In closing, for me to stay updated, I am going back to Simon Fraser University (SFU) to upgrade my skills on media advertising, including video. Anyone not using the tools will be left behind. 3 *CROSS COUNTRY CANADIAN NEWS* NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK National Volunteer week ran April 21-27, during the CTF Mixed Championships in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Bowling is an industry that relies heavily on the help of volunteers; volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. We vote in elections once a year, but when we volunteer, we vote everyday about the kind of federation we want for bowling in Canada. The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others. The Canadian Mixed Championships ran smoothly again with the work of volunteers and staff from Chateau Lanes. CTF would like to acknowledge the support we receive from those dedicated alley-cats who are always working events; Leagues, Tournaments, Fundraisers, Coaching, Youth Programs all aspects of our Sport. Quebec News Congratulations: Roger Bachand (R) who bowled his first perfect game, one week after Team Canada's David Simard drilled up his new weapon of choice. Félicitations à Roger Bachand pour avoir réussi sa première parfaite à vie, et ce un peu plus d'une semaine après que David Simard lui ait percé une Sync. Team Canada national champion David Simard (L) finished second on March 23 rd at the singles provincial tournament. David won $ 1, The tournament was played at Salon de Quilles L Empire de St- Felicien. The tournament offers very challenging patterns for those participating in order to test their skills. Caroline Lagranage finished second. Other finalist were; Patrick Girard, Frankie Catanzariti and Dan MacLelland. Saskatchewan News (Submitted by Dannie Ward) It turns out that Regina's Glencairn Lanes, notorious for being a tough scoring house due to the limited amount of oil put out on the lanes in the past, has acquired a new lane oiling machine. And it sounds like we will be hearing about more scoring achievements coming from the talented bowlers in the area. In early April, Edward Szakacs shot a 299 game in league. Is this the sign of things to come? And in mid-april, Monique Lafontaine, who has an average of 129, bowled a 192 game - 63 pins over her average. Maybe the new lane conditions are working for her too! Hamilton News (Submitted by Jim Margueratt) Jeff Easton of Brantford is the story this season in the Hamilton Association as the 28 year old has a trio of perfect games, plus a 300 bowl-out, at Star Lanes. After his first 300 in early September, he added a pair one month apart in January and February. His 229 average is six pins more than Travis Cauley & Art Oliver Jr. at Skyway Lanes. The current total of 11 perfect games, one 299, a pair of 298s and an 810 triple by Matt Lewis, for a total of 15 honour scores, are the lowest totals in over ten years in Hamilton. Four years ago we had 33 perfect games and 51 honour scores. Matt Lewis, who has three perfect games, two 800 triples (837 and 810), and a 299, now has a 297 to his credit, as after 11 strikes he went high leaving up the 3, 6 and 10 pins for the 297 at Skyway Lanes. His 837 triple is a Canadian record 279 triplicate. How rare is the 297 game in Hamilton? We have had 31 of them, compared to 82 games of 298, 168 games of 299, and 369 perfect games. Christine Johnston, 18, who rolled her first 300 game one month before Christmas, compiled a recruitment bowling video, available on you-tube, and it paid off as she starts at a Kentucky University on a bowling scholarship in August. Her father Tom, has a trio of 300 games. On the video, filmed at Splitsville Centre, Christine credits her coaches, Brad Angelo & Craig Woodhouse, for their expertise in helping her with her game. Chelsea King, who tripped a 300 last season, is on a bowling scholarship in Texas. Page 4

5 *CROSS COUNTRY CANADIAN NEWS* After more than 45 years of action at Skyway Lanes, the Westinghouse league, of which I am the President, will cease operation after this season due to declining membership. At one time it had 60 men in it, including Joe Ciach, Bill Rowe Jr., Art Oliver Jr., George Lambert IV, Lionel Lewis, Matt Lewis and Al Tone. There has been 10 perfect games rolled during its existence, including a 300 by my brother Edward, in March Currently it has 23 men and women. Bill Rowe Jr. of Hamilton, who was nominated for the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, was not selected. The last time a bowler was inducted was 36 years ago and there are only five bowlers among the over 500 Hall of Famers. Bill & Al Tone are still on the ballot for the Hamilton Sports Hall of Fame. George Lambert IV, formerly of Hamilton, now living and working for the U.S.B.C. in Texas, averaged 195 in a World Bowling Tour event in Japan. The Provincial Championships are set for Burlington Bowl in May. The last two times they were held there, the turnouts were 508 teams in 1987 and 251 teams in The expected turnout this time in 2013 is around 130 teams. HAMILTON TENPIN TRIVIA: During the C.T.F. Nationals at Burlington Bowl in May 2009, perfect games were rolled by George Lambert IV, Robin Orlikowski, Caroline Lagrange & Tim Dunn. In a practice session, Lambert, after 11 strikes let Matt Lewis throw the last ball, and he left a tenpin for a "combined" 299 game. Six months later, Catharine Willis-Rowe bowled-out an 802 triple, with a 300 game, at Burlington Bowl. Northern Ontario News (Submitted by Brian McLean) Andrew Hill (L) rolls to perfection at Mario s Bowl on March 6 th in the Praxair Men s League. It is the city s second sanctioned perfect game this season. The honour of the first perfect game this year goes to YBC bowler Luke McMillan. Hill s night started with a 300 game and ended with a 299. A pesky 10 pin kept Hill from rolling his second perfect game of the night. This is Hill s fifth 300 Game in three years. His first came in April 2011 followed by three more in 2012, holding the Canadian Lakehead Tenpin Bowling Association record for the most 300 games rolled by an individual. Andrew also holds the highest three game series with an 834, rolled last season, for the city of Thunder Bay. Michael Makela of Thunder Bay, Ontario, studying Kinesiology at Lakehead University, bowled 299, 278, 269 for 846 January 26 th in Duluth, Minnesota during a USBC sanctioned tournament. The following month, back in Duluth again, Michael shot a 300 Game in yet another USBC sanctioned tournament. Page 5

6 *CROSS COUNTRY CANADIAN NEWS* Michael, the nephew of Irene & Craig Woodhouse, is not only breaking through in the bowling world, but he was a member of the Northern Ontario Junior Curling Team for 2009 and Michael will be bowling at the Canadian National Championships in Montreal this coming May with hopes of breaking through onto Team Canada. Thunder Bay bowlers often travel to Duluth for bowling tournaments outside of TB, because Duluth is relatively close for them. Winnipeg is an eight hour drive and makes for a much longer journey. Nicole Walker (L) of Thunder Bay, Ontario who bowls out of Mario's Bowl made history on March 21 st by bowling a 299. She is the first woman ever to roll an honour score in Thunder Bay. Nicole accomplished her record in the Big M Mixed league - her scores for the night were 167, 299, and 181 for a 647 series. Lyndzie Dawson-Guay holds the ladies high triple record with a 715. James Shperuk Wins Northern Ontario Open Ian Nakonechny (R), tournament director, presenting Jame Shperuk with his prize money. James Shperuk won his first major tenpin event, the 2 nd Annual Northern Ontario Open at Mario s Bowl on April 6 th and 7 th. This was a sanctioned tenpin event. Shperuk led all of the entrants on Saturday, averaging 244 for the ten games, with a 2447 pinfall that included back to back 280s. This was 178 pins higher then Steve Jansson from Wisconsin. Jansson also rolled the high game of the day in game one with a 290. On Sunday, day two, after twelve games of match play, Mike Makela led the field, averaging 216 and nine wins. A win was worth another 20 bonus pins towards the total. Shperuk with 7 wins fell to third place behind Jansson who also had 7 wins. Mitch Parker came fourth with 7 wins, followed by Ian Nakonechny with 8 wins. The high game during match play was rolled by Jansson with another 290 game, which catapulted him to second place. In the stepladder finals: Parker No. 4 def. Nakonechny No.5, 193 to 192 Shperuk No. 3 def. Parker No.4, Shperuk No. 3 def. Jansson No. 2, , Championship match: Shperuk No. 3 def Makela No. 1, Canadian National World Cup 2009 World Cup Champion Caroline Lagrange (R) will once again go after the prestigious QubicaAMF world title. There was a lot of bowling, exercising (missed spares for bowlers and made splits for coaches), video analysis, coaching tips and general preparation for PABCON. In between bowling, the team was working on their bilingual communication skills as some members knew very little English and others knew very little French. As the weekend progressed you could see them connecting and emerging into a great TEAM! As we watch them compete at PABCON this July, they will make CANADA proud! Good Luck in Ponce, Puerto Rico. 19 *INTERNATIONAL BOWLING * Bowling News USA - April 10, 2013 PDW - G.O.A.T. by Donnie Layman This debate is one that the fans of any sport continue to have ad nauseam. Ironically, the argument comes up as one of the greats adds another trophy or accomplishment to their storied careers. As you know, Pete Weber won his 2nd ever TOC when he defeated Jason Belmonte to win this year's Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions. As I watched the telecast and how the TV pair was breaking down, I honestly couldn't see anyone having a better chance to win than Belmo. Call me crazy, but any telecast with both Belmo and Osku on it is going to end up being a contest of who can strike from the furthest point left on the lane. When reigning PBA Player of the Year Sean Rash seemed to be running out of room to the left in the semifinal match against Belmo, it seemed as if PDW would've been doomed to suffer the same outcome. But come on, we are talking about PDW bowling for a major title. And after watching him dismantle Belmo, it only further cemented in my mind that he is beyond a shadow of a doubt the Greatest of All Time. One could make the same arguments for the late Earl Anthony, Walter Ray Williams Jr. and a handful of other great bowlers through the years. And while the two men I just mentioned may possess more accomplishments on their resumes, none of them have overcome what PDW has. He has had to battle things in his personal life that have destroyed the lives of many athletes. Yet he has persevered. He also had a father who not only could hold his own in this debate, but was also the greatest ambassador our sport has ever had in Dick Weber. No player in the history of our sport, or many others, has had a greater shadow to overcome to establish their own legacy to rival or exceed what the other has accomplished. Pete Weber has done this. He sits tied for 3rd most victories in tour history, tied for most major victories, and has the most regional titles in PBA history. No name is more synonymous with greatness in bowling than the Weber name. Forget the fact that he has never won a Player of the Year award. In all reality, there are many years the voters kept him from having that honor. When it s all said and done he will have the best title of all...and that's the greatest bowler ever. 26 *CTF NEWS * CTF Annual General Meeting CTF held its Annual General Meeting in Winnipeg on Saturday, April 27th. Delegates from across the country were in attendance to see and hear the latest information from the organization. Every CTF Director, each of which has specific responsibilities, reported on their activities and the status of various projects that they and their committees are working on. Delegates also had the opportunity to ask questions, and discuss any aspect of the Director's report. CTF's financial picture, both last fiscal year's results and this coming year's budget, were presented. All in all, things are pretty healthy - approximately where we thought we'd be. That's good news. There are always challenges and hiccups, but CTF is coping with and addressing these as they arise. The Delegates learned that CTF is moving forward with the development of new Membership Processing software, to replace the current PBM program. If things go well, it may be ready for implementation this Fall. As well, a new Not For Profit Act has been introduced by the Federal Government. In order to conform to the Act, CTF will be reviewing and suggesting many changes to the Bylaws. The impact to our organization will be determined as we investigate our options and make decisions. The deadline for having everything in place is October, Another major item that takes place at the AGM is our Elections. This year, the three Directors whose 3-year terms were ending, were Cathy Innes, Jim Lester, and Joe Nunes. The candidates who submitted their nominations were Cathy Innes (BC), Jim Lester (ON), Bill Martin (MB), Brian McMaster (ON), and Ron Molinski (MB). After two rounds of voting, congratulations go to Cathy Innes, Brian McMaster, and Ron Molinski, who will begin their 3-year terms as CTF Directors, effective August 1st. As well, the CTF Board elected their officers for the coming year. Brian Von Richter will be our new President, Dan Tereck will be the First Vice-President, and Ron Molinski, the Second Vice-President. Congratulations to all! Since 2004, Cathy Innes has been the President of CTF. Effective July 31st, Cathy will be retiring from that role. We are pleased that Cathy will remain as a CTF Director. Our new President, Brian Von Richter will have some pretty big shoes to fill! On behalf of the delegates and the members, we thank you Cathy for nine dedicated years of service. And to Brian, we congratulate you and wish you great success in your new role. Page 26

27 *DID YOU KNOW * FACTS PROVIDED FROM THE BOWLERAMA TIMES In 1981, Manitoba's, John Trager received Outstanding Volunteer Award In 1941 pinsetters were paid a cent and a half per game (plus tips if you were a good pinsetter). In 1960, Richmond Hill's Diane Hudson became the first female pin-chaser Uruguay - An Argentine businessman-bowling freak had installed a single lane in his mansion in Montevideo. It was the first installation of Brunswick's synthetic system 2000 lanes in Latin America In 1967, The Andy Griffith Show aired the episode "Howard, the Bowler." Andy, Goober & Emmett need a 4th for their bowling team temporarily and they reluctantly agree on Howard Sprague. He doesn't have a lot of experience so their expectations aren't too high but at the big match against the "Blowhards" from Mount Pilot, Howard can do no wrong. With only one frame to go, Howard is still on his way to a perfect game. Just then, the power goes out forcing the end of the game to be rescheduled to the next night. Page 27
