1 November 2010 CTF CONNECTION Published by the Canadian Tenpin Federation, Inc. From the desk of the Executive Director Our first quarter of the season has already passed, and I would like to update you on what s happening at the CTF National Office. Memberships Memberships are coming into the National Office and that s always a good sign. To date, we have processed approximately 11,000 memberships with more arriving daily. We are maintaining our 7-10 day turnaround, with most cards being processed almost on the day we receive the database, and shipping the cards out as soon as the membership money is received. We are anticipating (hoping for?) an influx of databases within the next few weeks, and will strive to maintain our timeline. Centre Certifications Centre certifications, on the other hand, are not coming in as anticipated. It seems they are slower than ever in arriving. A list of the certified bowling centres as at November 8, 2010 is being sent to local associations. As a result, any honour score award application received for centres not currently certified or conditionally certified for the bowling season will be delayed pending receipt of a centre certification application or at the very least, some sort of confirmation as to when the application will be submitted. Mary Ann Cline will be advising those associations whose awards will be delayed. Lane Dressing Inspections It is a requirement under CTF Rules that one lane dressing inspection report is submitted to the CTF National Office every season. Many bowling centres haven t been sending in their reports or lane graphs. Maybe it s because they don t have a tape reader? We are pleased to announce that the CTF National Office has access to a tape reader, so associations can now submit the tapes, which we will read and send back the results. PBM Tips from Sue If you don t have a bowler s address for your database, please enter three dashes (- - -) in the address field. That way, when we run the membership letters and cards, they will line up properly on the page. Please try not to enter the information in all capital letters. What you put into the databases is exactly what will print on the membership cards, unless I can catch it. As you can imagine, fixing this can sometimes be a very timeconsuming job. Stan May, Executive Director CANADA S SCHMIDT WINS HIS SECOND BOWLING WORLD CUP Michael Schmidt, Winnipeg, Manitoba has won his 2nd Quibica/AMF Bowling World Cup. As some of you know, the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) embarked on a new path several years ago. The structure and philosophy of their coaching programs (for ALL sports) has been redefined. This new structure has been coined as the New NCCP. At the core of the new structure is the idea of having different types of coaches, which mean that there must be different streams of coaching education. The three streams are: Community Sport, Competition, and Instruction. CTF developed our Community Sport coaching program about 2 years ago, and the provinces have been delivering this coaching course for over a year to those people who want to coach within this scope that is, teaching bowlers (often, the focus is on youth) the fundamentals, and encouraging and supporting ongoing participation in youth and adult leagues. CTF has completed the development of the first coaching course in the Competition stream. The Introduction to Competition coaching course is now being rolled out across the country. If you are interested in becoming a tenpin bowling coach and working with athletes to develop them into higher-level competitive bowlers, then this is the first course in that stream. Check with your local tenpin bowling organizations to find out their course schedules in your area. If you want to find out more about the New NCCP, go to the Coaching Association of Canada website GEORGE HALAS BOWLS BACK TO BACK 300 GAMES George Halas, Canada s hearing impaired star bowler, bowled back to back 300 games on September 28th in his Rock & Rollers league which bowls at Planet Bowl in Etobicoke, ON. Here s what George sent us: It was such a magical night for me. The league is 4 games of which first two games are on one pair of lanes and for game 3 and 4, we move to a different pair of lanes based on lane assignment. On lanes 11-12, I hit a perfect 24 strikes resulting in my first ever 300 game in Canada. But did I realized that I am on pace to hit another 300 game right after it? I did not believe it but the strikes were just coming and coming all the way to complete it. Wow, I really put on a good show for my friends at the league and they all were thrilled to witness a rare display of strike power that night. My first 300 game were actually in U.S.A. back in June 2009 during a tournament. This is my career second and third perfect game but the first time I hit it in Canada. The other two games were 199 and 193 for a 992 series. I am not sure how many people bowled back to back 300 but I can say I am one of the few bowlers who have accomplished this feat. It feels really good! I am getting a perfect game 300 ring!!! Whoo hoo! George has a 212 average and is well known in the tournament circuit in the US for hearing impaired bowlers. The story of George s accomplishment was published in California s Connie Marchione s newspaper for hearing impaired bowlers. ############## LOCAL AND PROVINCIAL NEWS ONTARIO In the September edition, we advised that Lena Donahoe, Windsor, had finished 1 st in the Women s B division at the 2010 USBC Senior tournament in Reno, Nevada. If anyone knows of any other father - daughter duos with 300's, please contact me at: bowlingjim2003@yahoo.ca or hazelmcleary@gmail.com. Ten years after his last 300 game, Al Tone fired a perfect game at Skyway Lanes, his sixth. In May 2009, Tone was inducted into the C.T.F. Hall of Fame. Tone's first 300 was at Skyway Lanes back in 1987 and he has one of only four 300's at Bowlerama Stoney Creek. This 24 lane split house almost had their first ever 800 as Corey Raymer slapped a 791. Last May the first ever 800 was recorded at Star Lanes in Brantford, an 809 by Josh Colwell. Number two is now in the record books as Darin Lane tripped an 807. Also at Star, 12 year old Preston Novak started with nine strikes for a 275 game. Brantford Lanes, with 12 lanes of five pins and 12 lanes of tenpins has closed. Previous Association lanes to close were located in Oakville, Grimsby & Ancaster. Bill Rowe Jr., of Hamilton, head coach of the Qatar Men's bowling team, were the overall champions at the 10 th GCC tournament in Bahrain. They won three gold, one silver & one bronze medal. Former Hamilton resident, Joe Ciach is being inducted into the Toronto Tenpin Hall of Fame. His wife Kerrie, who had a 300 last season, was inducted two years ago. Joe's father, the late Bill Ciach, who has a perfect five pin game in 1976, was inducted into the Hamilton Tenpin Hall of Fame in Thanks as always, to Jim Margueratt for providing the Hamilton news. MANITOBA MTBCA Holds Free Summer Bowling Camp On September 1st, the Manitoba Tenpin Bowling Coaches Association put on a one-day Youth Camp. All Manitoba youth bowlers with an average of less than 120 were eligible to attend this free camp, and 27 of them did, ranging in age from 9 to 16. We had 7 coaches there to provide both off-lane and on-lane instruction. The intent was to give these young bowlers a crash course on the basics - the fundamentals. At this point in their bowling careers, it's exactly what they needed. And of course, the individualized on-lane coaching was tailored to meet each of their needs, based on what the coaches observed. The camp was free for the attendees all costs, including a pizza and hot dog lunch, were covered by the Coaches Association. Also, the Association would like to thank Chateau Lanes for giving us a discounted rate for the lineage. We plan on having one or two more of these camps during the season. WINNIPEG Winnipeg s Chateau Lanes has new owners! Chateau Lanes, currently the largest tenpin bowling centre in Winnipeg, went through a milestone this year. After 47 years, the original owners decided to sell the centre. In February of this year, the new owners the Nilsen family officially took over the centre. They have already made a number of changes and new additions to the centre, and Chateau Lanes future looks bright. The original owners were recognized by the bowling community at their annual Awards Banquet held on November 7, For more details of the change in ownership, you can go to Al Sylvestre rolls his 1 st 800 series! Monday, October 4 th was a special day for Al Sylvestre, bowling on lanes 13 and 14, in the Laverendrye #1 league at Winnipeg s Laverendrye Lanes. He rolled his first ever 800 series! He started out with a 256, then rolled a 299, leaving a 10-pin on his 12 th shot. And in his final game, he needed a strike on his fill ball in the 10 th frame for a 245, and an 800, right on the button. Other than Michael Schmidt (but he s in a separate class of his own), no one has rolled an 800 series at the centre in a little over 10 years. Congratulations, Al! Greater Winnipeg Classic League gets real! The members of this premiere scratch league made a major decision for the season. Instead of using a house shot, they decided to rotate between three different lane oiling patterns from Kegel s Challenge Series. The patterns are known as Middle Road, Broadway, and Beaten Path (to find out more about these, visit: One pattern would be used for an entire segment. Therefore, since the schedule consists of six 5-

6 week segments, the rotation would mean that segments 1 and 4 would use the Middle Road pattern, segments 2 and 5 would have Broadway, and segments 3 and 6 would have the Beaten Path pattern. The league has 3 weeks of roll-offs, so the 3 patterns will be rotated there as well. The league knew that most of bowlers averages would go down because of this tougher oiling pattern, but the majority wanted to try it. It not only gives the bowlers more of a challenge and a chance to learn more about, and improve, their skills. It also shows the bowling community that the Classic League is not afraid to step outside of the box to find innovative ways to keep the top bowlers in Winnipeg coming back to the league, and to help them stay on top of their game. Kudos to the Classic League for this daring move! The Manitoba Tenpin Federation and Manitoba Bowling Association held their annual Awards Banquet on November 7th. About 170 attendees were on hand to recognize the accomplishments of Manitoba's adult and youth bowlers in the season. The culmination of the ceremony is the announcements of the Manitoba "Bowlers of the Year". The female and male youth "Bowlers of the Year" were Danielle Lemoine and Austyn Ducharme. The adult "Bowlers of the Year" were Lynne Gauthier and Michael Schmidt. Paul McCarthy, a local Winnipeg bowler, rolled his firstever 300 game on Saturday, Nov 30th, in our annual Hi- Low Doubles tournament. It was his 2nd shift (yes, he had qualified in two leagues for this tournament), and he bowled games of 216, 247, and then his 300, for a series total of 763. And yes, he and his partner, Bob Marentette came in 1st. Interestingly, Paul does almost all of his bowling at his home lanes Laverendrye Lanes. But this tournament was held at another centre Chateau Lanes. Some sad news - Eric Young, a long-time supporter of tenpin bowling in Manitoba, passed away on September 19, Eric and his wife Eleanor were a fixture at almost all bowling tournaments being held in and around Winnipeg throughout the years. They were always willing to help manage and run these tournaments. As well, Eric devoted a lot of his time and effort to the Provincial and Local bowling associations for many years, serving in many capacities, from Director, to President, and almost everything in between. Eric will be missed by the Manitoba bowling community. In his honour, the Winnipeg association renamed one of their largest tournaments of the year in his honour. May 29th. She accomplished this at the National Classified tournament held in Edmonton at Ed s Rec Centre.. Darryl Culetta bowled a perfect game in the Adult/Youth league at Glencairn bowl on March 31st. His games were 235, 202, 300, for a 737 series. BRITISH COLUMBIA Long time association leader Walt Torry, Coquitlam passed away on October 28, Walt served the local, provincial and national association in various capacities for many years. Walt was a member of the CTF board from serving in several roles including 1 st Vice President. A Memorial Service to celebrate Walt's life will be held on Friday, November 26th, 2010 at 2:00pm at Burquitlam Funeral Home, 625 North Rd, Coquitlam, BC, The 7 th Annual BC Tenpin Federation Senior Tournament will be held November at Splitsville Entertainment, 171 Calder Rd., Nanaimo. Further information is available at ############## PBA WORLD SERIES Several Canadians participated in the PBA World Series at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. 252 bowlers competed in five days of 12-game qualifying rounds on five different PBA lane conditioning patterns. The top 16 qualifiers who survived each of the daily contests the Brunswick Pro Bowler Cheetah Championship, Pepsi Viper Championship, Chameleon Championship, Scorpion Championship and GEICO Shark Championship, returned to the lanes the second week for nine games of round robin match play and a final step-ladder final. All finals were televised for later viewing. Dan MacLelland, Windsor, ON, Mark Buffa, Montreal, QC, Patrick Girard, Jonquiere, Quebec, Kasey Normandin, Toronto area and George Lambert, Hamilton, participated. They were among nine international countries participating Canada, Finland, England, South Korea, Colombia, Venezuela, Australia, Sweden and Denmark. Dan MacLelland, the Collegiate All American, was the most successful of the Canadians. He was the #1 seed for the Shark and was defeated in the final by the South Korean. In the Scorpion, Dan finished fifth. He earned a total of $12,000. Mark Buffa won $1800 in the Cheetah competition. SASKATCHEWAN Regina Susan Vanderaa (Former Team Canada member Frank Boehm s daughter), bowled her first career 300 game on
