1 CTF CONNECTION Published by the November 2006 FROM THE DESK OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Membership and Award processing: Currently 50% of our membership dues have been remitted to National Office. Updated membership counts will appear on the website for November. Last Season Highest Averages have been added to the Membership Card for those associations that provide the information in their databases. These averages are only as accurate as the information provided by the association managers. All averages should be verified with either the association manager or your league secretary. Again as in past years, centre certifications and lane dressing inspections are very slow coming in. Restrictions have been placed on award orders where National Office has not received these certifications. Honour Score applications are being submitted in leagues that have not yet submitted league sanction applications. It is imperative that association managers speed up the process of submitting league sanctions and membership dues. Bee Bee Program: The National Office launched a new membership category with introduction of our Bee Bee Program. This launch has been well received across Canada and a number of associations and leagues have been ordering the packages. The Youth Committee is currently working on redesigning more of the youth crest awards to our cat character designs for release in the 2007/2008 season. All youth bowlers across Canada are receiving a ballot with their membership cards for the CTF/FCDQ Name that Cat Contest. A number of entries have already been received, so make sure each youth bowler has the opportunity to submit their entry. Storm has graciously donated a two ball bag as the prize for the contest. Thanks goes to Robin Orlikowski in Marketing for negotiating with Storm for this prize and a special thank you to STORM for their donation. Perfect Bowler Manager update: Perfect Bowler Manager 3.0 is in the final stages of testing and will be released very soon. This release will again be an electronic release using the live-update to do the upgrade. The upgrade will include a format change for the Average Reports. All standard average reports will now include a column for gender and the name of the league the average was bowled in. A utility has been added on the Start New Season screen to delete any old ABC, WIBC and YABA bowlers that are not currently bowling or were assigned a new CTF ID #. This utility is set up using the CTF ID prefix number as the sort code to delete the old entries. As all CTF ID numbers start with the association number and are greater than 10,000, all ID #s from 0 to 10,000 can be deleted. A Paid in Other Association selection has be added for those applications where bowlers bowl in more than one association. Process Date and League Sanction Number boxes have been added to the Enter/Edit Bowler screen to facilitated monitoring of membership entries and quicker membership card processing at National Office. These boxes are auto populated by the database and cannot be edited as they are for National Office use only. Coaching Courses: After many lengthy meetings and preparation, the Development Committee has completed our New NCCP Community Sport Initiation Stream. We have received NCCP approval to launch the new program in our coaching structure. Effective December 1, 2006, the CTF Coaching Structure will now provide the Community Sport Initiation Courses to our current and up and coming coaches. This is an 8 hour course for entry level coaches wishing to work in league programs to coach entry level bowlers. This course replaces the old Level I Theory, Technical and Practical courses that used to take 2 weekends to complete. As there is no assessment at this level coaches will be awarded Community Sport status upon completion of the course. This new course requires the training of facilitators to conduct this new course. Throughout the past year the Development Committee has also trained 10 Master Learning Facilitators (MLF) and 13 Learning Facilitators (LF) in preparation to launch this new course. The Development Unit has started work on the next stream Introduction to Competition that will eventually replace the current NCCP Level II course and a Long Term Athlete Development Program. With the implementation of the Community Sport Initiation Course, changes were needed in the CTF Coaching Structure. The National Office is now in charge of all operations regarding implementation and facilitating our coaching program as the National Coordinator. Provincial and Local Associations are required to appoint a Coaching Coordinator to conduct coaching courses in their areas. The National Office will be sending a notice to all Provincial and Local Associations to appoint a Coaching Coordinator for their respective associations. Your coordinators must be appointed by no later than December 31, The New CTF Coaching Structure, Coaching Coordinator Roles & Responsibilities and CTF Coaching Course Price Structure will be posted to our website under the

2 Coaching Development tab at Award Changes: The Board of Directors has approved the changes recommended by the Awards Committee for our Sport Bowling Awards and Canadian Mixed Championship Awards. Effective immediately Honour Score Awards in a sanctioned CTF Sport Bowling League will be as follows: 300 & 800 Awards Wooden Pin and; 298 & 299 Game Score Plaque & Standard Ring Award; a 290 Award, a 200 Average award and a 250 Game Award are being designed for implementation for next season. Beginning with the 2006 Canadian Mixed Championships held in Montreal the winners of the Handicap Team Event will each receive a Crystal Pin & Logo Award and the Handicap Doubles, Handicap Singles & Handicap All Events winners will receive a Crystal Logo Award. These awards will be presented to the winners in these divisions annually once the official results are verified at the completion of the Canadian Mixed Championships. Rule Changes: The Regulatory Committee has received a number of Playing Rule changes and Bylaw changes for consideration. The Playing Rule changes stem from changes made by USBC and will be considered by the Board and submitted as amendments to the Delegates at the next Annual General Meeting in Edmonton. The Bylaw changes will be addressed and voted on by the Board of Directors at our next regular meeting. The latest change by USBC in regards to Youth Rule #400 will be investigated by both our youth and regulatory committees for consideration as this rule dramatically changes the youth eligibility rules and places more responsibility on the youth bowler to protect their eligibility in future collegiate education. Final approval by the Board of Directors was given to the tournament rules for the Canadian Mixed Championships in Edmonton and the Canadian National Championships in Montreal as recommended by the Competitive Unit. The Canadian Mixed Championships rules remain unchanged with the entry fees for each event at $30.00 and an additional $10.00 for each optional event. The entry deadlines have been set at ½ hour before the start of each scheduled shift. The Canadian National Championships format for the first 3 days will change to 8 games in two 4-game blocks instead of 12 as in past years. The cut in the women s division will be reduced to the top 24 after day 2 and to 12 after day 3. The men s cuts will remain the same as in past years at 36 after day 2 and 18 after day 3. Day 4 will be a 12 game match play format. Entry fees are $ with the entry deadline of April 30, Entry forms and payment must be submitted to CTF National Office postmarked no later than April 30, Nominations: Nominations are open for three Director positions on the Board. Lambert, a seasoned international bowler, qualified second among 498 bowlers at the Unite States Bowling Congress Masters tournament and finished in third place. The Masters, held in Wauwatosa, a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is the first Professional Bowlers Association stop of the year and one of their majors. Lambert advanced with ease, Lambert continued his success as he knocked off #10 Chad Maas , #6 John May and #46 George Gohagan III In the final four, Lambert found himself with three current touring PBA members, Jack Jurek, Tommy Jones and Doug Kent. He faced Kent to determine his position of the stepladder televised finals on Sunday and defeated himt Lambert than met Jurek who defeated him , so he entered the televised finals as the #2 seed. On the TV final,.sunday, October 29, Kent had a chance to redeem his previous loss after he defeated Tommy Jones in the first round and positioned himself to face Lambert once again in round two, with the winner advancing to the finals. Kent bowled amazingly as he defeated Lambert and continued on to win the title and $100,000 by defeating Jack Jurek Jurek earned $50,000 for second. Schmidt won the 41 st event in Ljubjiana, Slovenia and was in second place from day one of the qualifying for this year s cup taking place in Caracas, Venezuela. Jeanette Baker of Australia is the only back-to-back winner. She won in 1994 and 1995.However, it was not to be. Schmidt met the third place qualifier Petter Hansen of Norway in the first two of three-wins step-ladder match. Hansen won the first game 289 to 241. After a good finish for Schmidt (seven strikes in a row) the crowd was with him (they were looking for an American Zone winner over an European Zone player)! Hansen started the first six frames strike, spare, strike. Schmidt had three splits and three spares in his first six frames. Schmidt then had three strikes in the 7 th, 8th and 9 th frames while Hansen went strike, spare, spare. If Schmidt could have struck in the tenth frame he had a chance because Hansen left a six count and missed his spare for a 183 game but Schmidt had left the 3-6 pin and spared and a nine count second ball and a 179 game. Part of the not to be may have been that Schmidt was not totally relaxed going into the match. His tote bag went missing from the bowling center the day before and he and father Rick (who was his coaching) had spent the morning at the Canadian Embassy arranging for papers to get home as his passport was in the tote!. In the final step-ladder match, Hansen met the men s leader Osku Paleramaa of Finland for the title. Palermaa defeated Hansen two games to one. In the women s division, Lisa John of England beat Mai Ginge Jensen of Denmark two games to one in the first match. The leader Diandra Asbaty of the USA then beat John two games straight to take the title. Bowlers from 93 countries 89 males and 73 females have been competing in the event which is taking place from November Schmidt and Veronica Lalande- Lapointe, Ille Perrot, Quebec, earned the right to represent Canada in Caracas at the national World Cup qualifier held in Caraquet, New Brunswick last March. Lalande-Lapointe finished in 21 st place in the women s division and missed the cut to 8 women who bowled to determine the final three women. She improved on her finish in the 2005 competition in Slovenia where she finished 31 st 2007 CALENDAR OF EVENTS April Canadian Mixed Championships, Gateway Entertainment Centre, Edmonton, Alberta.
