The North Texas AHC, Gulf Coast AHC and our club hosted Conclave STAHC members can be proud of their par8cipa8on in this very successful event. Seventeen STAHC members a2ended Conclave and most helped with one or more of the events. Many of our members helped with prepara8ons before and with ac8vi8es at the event itself. Bonnie Ayer worked very hard as chairperson for Conclave. Mike Manser, unable to a2end due to work commitments, never the less conducted a very interes8ng tech session. Lera Borden conducted a tech session on quil8ng that was of par8cular interest to the Ladies, and she contributed two very fine Healey-themed quilts to the auc8on. Ron Borden helped with many of the events both before and during Conclave and has devoted this issue of Rumblin s to post-conclave coverage. Many other STAHC members contributed to the success of Conclave in ways too numerous to men8on. STAHC did not do this alone. Several members of the other Texas Healey clubs pitched in along with members of clubs outside Texas. A special thanks goes to Neil Anderson, AHCA Vice President Conclave, for his help making Conclave 2017 a success. Next month, STAHC will celebrate Na8onal Ice Cream Social Day, along with other Healey Clubs in North America, at Amy s in Wimberley, on August 12 at 2:00 PM. Tina and Bob Adkins will host this event. We will conduct a short business mee8ng to appoint a nomina8ng commi2ee for officers in 2018, and another commi2ee to start planning for Texas Healey Roundup in We will also discuss plans for South Texas All Bri8sh Car Day on October 28 to be held in Boerne. It is our turn to host this event. I hope to see all of you in Wimberley on August 12. Jim 2

3 CONCLAVE 2017 IN REVIEW POPULARITY CAR SHOW Sunday akernoon, aker most Healeys and their owners had arrived in Waco for Conclave 2017, a storm with lightning, thunder, very high winds and torren8al rain complete with small size hail, hit central Texas and the Waco area. Fortunately, the hail was small enough not to damage the Healeys. AKer the storm the temperature dropped significantly. The welcome cooler weather, complete with a cloud cover, con8nued all Monday morning. Conclave par- 8cipants, including those that did not have Healeys to display in popularity, were the beneficiaries, as were residents and visitors of Waco that came to view our beau8ful cars. And beau8ful they were! Forty-six cars and one Healey Sport Boat were on display. Conclave a2endees cast 115 ballots for their favorite in eleven classes including the Healey Sport Boat. No diamonds in the rough showed up. Not even close. Vo8ng in many of the classes was close however, due to the high quality of the cars. Loca8on of the popularity show was ideal. The city of Waco let us close University Parks Drive, the street right in front of the Conclave hotel and conven8ons center, for all of Monday including the Party on the Bridge that evening. Across the street from the hotel is Indian Springs Park, a small sliver of land, separa8ng University Parks Drive and the Brazos River. In the center of the park stands a key part of the Chisholm trail, a suspension bridge constructed in the years following the Civil War for ca2le to cross the Brazos river on the great ca2le drives to Kansas railheads. Twenty-five head of ca2le and three cowboys, cast in Bronze now stand at the entrance to the suspension bridge. The park, the bronze ca2le and cowboys, the bridge and the river provided the perfect backdrop for the popularity car show. Many Conclave par8cipants helped make this event possible. A special thanks goes to Neil Anderson for providing very informa8ve signage for each class, and Hilary Cooper and Ed Reiss for transpor8ng the sign stands with real Healey wire wheel bases to Conclave. Thanks for all those that helped place the signs and park the Healeys. Thanks also to the City of Waco for leong us close the street and providing the barricades. A special thank you to Bri8sh Restora8on Corpora8on of Philadelphia for their sponsorship of the Popularity Car Show. Popularity Car Show winners are listed on the next page. 3

9 CONCLAVE 2017 TECH SESSIONS INTEGRATING OUR CLASSIC CARS INTO A WORLD OF AUTOMATED AND CONNECTED VEHICLES Presented by Dr. Michael Manser (Jaime Molina s photographs) Most Conclave tech sessions have been about the care and feeding of our Healeys with topics like Prepara8on & Development of Fast Road Healeys, Repair and Restora8on or Installa8on of a Five Speed Transmission in a Healey. So what could a tech session about automated and connected vehicles have to do with Healeys? AKer all, many Healey owners are apprehensive concerning the development of automobiles with more and more automa8on. Michael Manser, our tech session presenter, has a PhD in psychology and is a member of the South Texas Aus8n-Healey Club. He works for the Texas A&M Transporta8on Ins8tute as a Human Factors Program Manager. Michael and his wife Stacey own a beau8ful BN1 recently restored by Fourintune Garages, the sponsor of this tech session. Mike has raced Healeys and, I have it on good authority, is an excellent mechanic. Michael gave a brief recap of the development of technology based systems in modern automobiles and talked about the future when vehicles, with or without drivers, will be able to communicate with each other and react to perceived threats or dangers. This development is not something that is in the far distant future, but will happen in the next few years. So what does all this mean for our fiky or sixty plus year old English sports cars built with even older technology? The answer surprised many of us. Our Healeys (and we) will be safer! How can this be? AKer all, most of us won t retrofit our Healeys with sensors and other safety devises beyond, perhaps, seat belts. Future automobiles will be able to sense our Healeys on the road even though our cars cannot sense them. Once a Healey is iden8fied as a poten8al danger that modern automobile will be able to take defensive ac8on to avoid that hiong that Healey. Dr. Manser did a great job presen8ng informa8on about technological development of the modern automobile, both now and in the near future, and how that will affect our use of Healeys and other old cars. 9

11 T-SHIRT QUILTS TECH SESSION Presented by Lera Borden On Tuesday akernoon Lera Borden conducted a tech session on construc8ng quilts using t-shirts in place of conven8onal fabric. She began by discussing an overall layout of the quilt based on the number of shirts available. Covered next was prepara- 8ons to be made such as laundering the shirts, a2aching a stabilizer fabric to the back of each shirt, and sizing of the ini8al cut of the shirt. A number of detailed design op8ons were projected showing many possibili8es that are available to add interest to the quilt. The session was concluded with sugges8ons for baong, backing and s8tching pa2erns, and answering ques8ons from the a2endees. (Jaime Molina s photograph above) Two t-shirt quilts that Lera, and her sister, Alice Hobbs, made especially for Conclave were auc- 8oned off at the Thursday evening banquet. The first quilt was made from 6 t-shirts from Na8onal Healey Day events in Japan (below). The other auc8on quilt (right & below right) contained t- shirts donated from previous Conclaves, and Healey photos transferred to a special transfer fabric with an inkjet printer. 11

She put in an untold number of hours organizing the event, and s8ll is working hard as she is puong together coverage for Conclave to appear in a coming issue of Healey Marque. Conclave a2endees from all over the country and those travelling from Canada owe her a huge thank you! STAHC is proud of you! As you have seen, this issue of Rumblin s features a considerable amount of text and photos of the Waco Conclave. In order to keep the length of this issue reasonable the GeOng to Know You series will not appear this month. It will resume next month featuring a very well known and very well liked club member and his wife! Text for the Manser Tech Session & the Popularity Car Show write-ups is provided by Jim Richmond.
