3 Congress Authorized Additional Construction in 1948 Congress authorized additional work in response to significant hurricane damages in 1946 and 1947 as part of the Central & Southern Florida Project (Flood Control Act of 1948) Existing levees were raised to provide an increase in the Lake Okeechobee regulation schedule 1964 Construction New levees were constructed in the northwest and the northeast shores of Lake Okeechobee The levees around the shores of Lake Okeechobee were renamed Herbert Hoover Dike 3

8 Dam Safety Modification Study System-Wide Risk Reduction Approach Goal is to reduce the risk of failure Identify and address the highest risks first through the study Cut-off wall in Reach 1 and culvert replacements and removals are riskreduction features Seepage Management Test Facility (Pilot Test) Alternative risk-reduction feature for embankment and foundation seepage control Dam Safety Modification Study (DSMS) Study includes the entire 143-mile embankment and structures Multiple alternatives being developed and analyzed to reduce risk NEPA document will include alternatives developed within the DSMS Draft NEPA document available for public review in Summer 2014 Study approval in
