2 Thursday 7 August will mark 150 years since the first recorded game of football was played. To celebrate this milestone, Kick Around Australia Day has been scheduled, giving all Australians the opportunity to join in the celebrations. As part of Kick Around Australia Day, primary and secondary schools around the country are encouraging students to wear their footy colours to school, organise kicking and handballing competitions or complete one of the new footy themed programs that have been developed in line with the curriculum. Some of the Northern Territory Schools have been busy planning already, with Good Shepherd Lutheran College having a Guernsey Day, Bees Creek Primary School having a longest kick competition and Wagaman Primary School are incorporating AFL into their morning fitness program. To register your school, visit afl.com.au/schools. If you register by Friday August 1 st you will go into a draw to win 10 AFL Junior bags and 5 limited edition 150 th Anniversary AFL footballs. Don t forget there are over 150 ideas that can be taught across various key learning areas of how to celebrate Australian Football in the classroom for primary and lower secondary classes. School nationwide competitions are also being conducted, all the lesson plans and competitions details are on line at afl.com.au/schools. Businesses across Australia are also invited to join in the celebrations by offering employees the opportunity to stop work and have a kick of the footy on August 7 or wear their footy scarf to work. To find out more about how you get involved in Kick Around Australia Day, visit 150years.com.au. 2
3 GRAND FINAL The 2008 AFL SportsReady Cup Grand Final was held last night at TIO Stadium in ideal conditions between Dripstone Middle School and Kormida College. Both teams had fantastic wins last week. The game was a tight affair with both teams playing tough, hard, accountable footy. Dripstone was in front at half time by the smallest of margins, 1 point, which set the game up for a cracking second half. Dripstone s 3 rd quarter, the premiership quarter as they say was super. Anthony Gugliotta, Jarrod Stokes and Jack Hatcher were instrumental in providing the Dripstone forwards with plenty of scoring chances. They were able to kick 3 goals to Kormilda s one in the 3 rd quarter, which certainly set the victory up. Kormilda did rally in the last term but it was all to no avail as Dripstone held on to win by 7 points with which was truly a superb victory. Aaron Pollard from Dripstone was awarded best on ground for his tireless work over the 4 quarters, while Randy Mugatopi was outstanding all night for Kormilda. Full credit must go to Gaetano Gugliotta and Grant Hatcher who both took on the coaching duties for Dripstone this season and did a marvellous job. Above: Aaron Pollard from Dripstone College was awarded best on ground for the Grand Final. On the following night after the Grand Final we held our presentations for the Sportsready Cup. Each team that participated nominated a Best and Fairest for their team. 4 training sessions with elite coaches, skill and agility testing and also play a curtain raiser at the MCG before the Essendon and Richmond match. The Qantas AFL Kickstart Country Trials were held in Katherine on the 4th and 5 th of June giving remote communities a chance to get together and play AFL. It also provided 5 indigenous kids with an opportunity to be selected to travel to Melbourne in July for a five day training camp. Several teams took part in the Katherine country Trials; Katherine Clontarf, Alice Springs Yirara Clontarf, East Arnhem/Tiwi Combined, Oenpelli/Maningrida Combined and the Desert Saints who were a combination of young boys from many other different communities. Upon the teams arrival on Tuesday scratch matches were put together and played under lights at the Katherine show grounds, with a barbeque for the boys after the games had finished. The following day all teams played each other once and demonstrated some very exciting and quick football, impressing the watchful eye of Jason McCartney and the AFLNT staff. After 5 rounds of quality footy the top four teams played off which saw Oenpelli/ Maningrida v Tiwi/Arnhem in the semi finals fighting for third position with Tiwi narrowly beating Oenpelli/Arnhem in a nail biter and Katherine Clontarf v Alice Springs Clontarf in the heart stopping Grand Final with Yirara taking out the victory, 53 to 31. A number of players where spotted as being exciting young talents over the course of the trials but there were four stand outs who were selected to travel to Melbourne for the 5 day camp; they were Dylan Johnny and Ben Neade from Alice Springs (Yirara) Clontarf, Cyril Wilson from Oenpelli Magpies, Damian William from Katherine Clontarf and Sebastian (Mr Bean) Wanambi from Tiwi/Arnhem. These boys are four of twelve young indigenous players from the Territory that have been selected to fly to Melbourne and participate in However the 2 days were not all focused on AFL as Jason McCartney delivered a seminar on goal setting, good choices and leadership aiding the boys in their development as both footballers and people which in turn will help them later life. McCartney showed some inspirational footage of elite AFL stars such as Nathan Buckley and Michael Voss and spoke to the boys about what qualities as people these legends of the game had, for example courage, commitment and good decision making. He then told the boys how they themselves could incorporate those qualities in their own lives. All the volunteers and staff at the country trials spent time with the boys in moments of downtime and during games watching movies on the projector and kicking the footy around. 6 AFL KickStart Healthy Lifestyle Carnivals East Arnhem The Coca-Cola Australia Foundation Healthy Lifestyle Carnival program recently touched down in East Arnhem, with HLC events held at Nhulunbuy in Gove, and at Alyangula on Groote Eylandt. Over 70 children attended the HLC in Nhulunbuy, while at least another 50 children attended the HLC at Alyangula. Children came from as far as Milyakburra on Bickerton Island, flying in to Alyangula especially to participate in the carnival. Both carnivals were heralded as outstanding successes, with local members of police, health and education, all giving presentations to the children. Tennant Creek Children from all over the Barkley region in central Northern Territory came to Tennant Creek recently to participate in their region s Coca-Cola Australia Foundation Healthy Lifestyle Carnival. Over 50 boys and girls attended the HLC event, where they participated in football games and attended healthy lifestyle sessions from the Federal Department of Education, local police and an enthusiastic mascot, Charlie the cancer causing Cigarette who gave an entertaining presentation on the dangers of smoking. Wadeye Essendon Football Club was on hand recently to participate in the Coca-Cola Australia Foundation Healthy Lifestyle Carnival event held in Wadeye. Nearly 100 children attended the day, which included football matches and speeches from Essendon players Dean Dick & Andrew Lovett, community elders and AFLNT RDM Ben Kelly. One of the highlights of the HLC was that the messages were delivered in both English and the local Murinpatha language. The games were played in terrific spirit, with some highly skillful passages of play; the highlight reel was endless. At the end of the day the Hawks were victorious in a great display of local junior talent. During half time of the round robin matches, the healthy lifestyle messages were given in speeches by the speakers, highlighting the importance of issues such as attending school, eating the right food, drinking plenty of water, violence and the dangers of drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana. 6

AFL Sport Education is an innovative curriculum model exhibiting parallels with community sport that can be used in middle primary to early secondary with great success. Students develop a better understanding and appreciation of the roles that are performed in community football environments. Through a season of sport students can develop into better players and also learn other roles such as umpiring, team management, coaching, leading a team captain, sports journalist or publicity officer, or servicing on the football committee. The resource is available to schools on this section of the site and is also available in a CD-ROM format. If you would like to use AFL Sport Education at your School please contact your local Regional Development Manager for more information. 7
8 SSA Australian Rules Carnival Combine Boundary Clancy Page (OLSH) We wish all those umpires all the best when representing the Northern Territory when they go interstate during July/August. The AFLNT Umpiring Academy took it to another level this year by umpiring all games in the field, on the boundary and in the goals at the recently completed SSNT u/15 Championships in Alice Springs, which is a first that no teachers or students had to help out. I would like to personally thank all the umpires involved for their great effort and enthusiasm over the 3 days and hope they found the Academy experience rewarding and beneficial in their developing umpiring career s to date. The junior Academy umpires received quality coaching, participated in recovery sessions, work on Achieving Goals Actively session and also received a DVD of their finals match to self access. Also I like to thank Wally Gallio and Lyndon Bradshaw for giving up time out of their busy schedule s for there experience coaching and quality feedback over the 3 days. BUFF-STAR is looking forward to Kick Around Australia Day and celebrating our 150 th birthday.
