4 In its inaugural year the Northern States Cup has been contested by Queensland, Northern Territory, New South Wales and the Australia Capital Territory. The Northern States Cup is an initiative of the AFL, AFL (NSW/ACT), AFLQ and AFLNT to create a participation pathway for players and schools at the Under 14 age level. On Thursday August 14 th Northern Territory held their regional finals at Southern Cross Oval in Palmerston. Five schools participated in a round robin contest which included St Johns College, Kormilda College, Sanderson Middle School, Taminmin and Palmerston. The matches started early in the morning with Kormilda, St Johns and Sanderson all registering wins in their first appearance. Sanderson and Kormilda provided the match of the day which was a thriller that ended with a goal kicked by Jed Anderson in the dying seconds of the game. The final game of the day was contested by rivals St Johns and Kormilda and Sanderson were hoping for a Kormilda victory which would keep them alive and percentage would decide who would progress to Sydney. St Johns were very consistent all day and their lunchtime trainings payed dividends with some excellent football in the last game wining by five goals and booking themselves a spot in the national finals in Sydney. were a little tired and weary. Their first game was against Mater Dei College from Wagga Wagga. After the first quarter St Johns College were very competitive however they gave their opponents a 7 goal head start. The final scores of the first game saw Mater Dei College defeated St Johns to 9.9. On the Saturday the boys had a rest day and they were able to size up the opposition before heading into the heart of Sydney and having a luxury harbour cruise. On Sunday morning all players were lucky enough to hear from Alan McConnell, head coach of the AIS/AFL Academy who has watched junior football in every corner of Australia in his role as tutor of the next crop of stars. He explained the talent pathway for these young budding AFL players and what recruitment staff are looking for in an AFL footballer. On the third day Sydney produced fine weather again and their opposition Helensvale from the Gold Coast were favourites for the match. St Johns College were inspired from the mornings talk and looked like a different side. After brilliant performances from Mathew Cubis in the middle and Jospeh Victor up forward St Johns College ran out victorious in the last game 13.5 to The finals standings saw the New South Wales School, Mater Dei College winners with Helensvale from Queensland finishing second and St Johns College third. Jeremiah Edwards was awarded the coaches trophy for the whole carnival. Above: Captains Jeremiah Edwards and Mathew Cubis with the winning trophy. On September 19 th St Johns College flew to Sydney for the Northern States Cup national finals. Their first game was Friday afternoon and after a long flight and a traffic jam in Sydney the players 4

5 On Wednesday 10th September, the second Larrakia Development Corporation Cup was held at Southern Cross Oval Palmerston. This competition is a school-based AFL carnival for students in years 10 to 12 supported by the Larrakia Development Corporation and AFLNT. Three schools attended the day out at Southern Cross, Darwin High School, Casuarina Senior College and Taminmin High. Also in attendance on the day were Danila Dilba, Territory Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs, Defence Recruitment, Group Training NT and Myriad Group Training. The day kicked off with Taminmin and Darwin toughing it out in an exciting good spirited match. Darwin High completed a clean sweep of both Casuarina and Taminmin High Schools after well fought out matches by both sides. At the end of the day a small presentation was held giving thanks to all the volunteers and school for participating in the competition, along with presenting the player of the series award to star ruckman Joshua Chaplin from Darwin High. Darwin High s victories ensured that they retained the honours of the Larrakia Cup. Special guest Mark Motlop representative from Larrakia and also NTFL League coach awarded the medallions and trophy to Darwin High. Above: Umpires from left to right Brad Copeland, Xavier Moloney, Mark Noonan, Michael Gugliotta and Tegan Newman Earlier this term St Johns College, Kormilda College, Darwin High and Casuarina Senior College played each other at various venues around Darwin. There were some excellent games played with Darwin and St Johns playing the first game at Marrara Number 2 Oval. It was a fiercely contested game between St Johns and Darwin with excellent skills displayed by both teams. At the long break St Johns was 4-4 to Darwin 3-0. The second half was just as competitive with Darwin pushing St Johns until the last quarter when they kicked four goals which was their best for the match. The final score saw St Johns College defeating Darwin 9-12 to 5-3. A special thankyou to Rachel Elphick for her fantastic support of Senior Boys Football at Darwin High School and for her organisation of the carnival this term. We were met at the Mandorah Jetty by a staff member from the school who conveyed us to Belyuen Community. AFL NT staff were greeted by Tim Webb (Principal) and prepared for our first football clinic with the early childhood students. We talked with students about the importance of an education and explained to them how through improved attendance or by maintaining there current good attendance over an 8 week period, that they would eligible for a Kickstart Backpack containing (football, lunch box, water bottle, hat). Along with their Backpack and gear a Kickstart/ Auskick Centre would be started in term 4 by Katina Winsely (After- school Care Coordinator) that all students can attend. 7 Melbourne Sports and Aquatic centre where they were able to leave the cold weather outside, and enjoy themselves in the heated wave pool. The 2008 AFL Community Exchange program was again very successful this year thanks to the extensive planning by the Auskick centre in Melbourne. There were four communities from the Northern Territory invited on the exchange who got to experience the busy Melbourne lifestyle. This was a great experience for all involved, especially the children as most of them had never left the Territory before. Each community were given the opportunity to send six children and two community members to Melbourne, with each community accompanied by an AFLNT staff member. During the four days the three communities had the chance to meet up at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic centre and the Melbourne Zoo, however during the rest of the exchange the community s were in different locations. Belyuen was one of the communities who got to experience this exchange, with three boys and three girls making the journey to the other side of the country. The children were broken up into groups of two, and were billeted out to families who have been heavily involved with the program since During the exchange the children were exposed to a range of new experiences which they have never been familiar with before. After the four hour flight on Thursday the children were picked up by the billets and taken back to their homes where they were introduced to the families. Two of the communities then met in Richmond where they were able to watch the mighty Tigers train. After wards everyone made there way to the The following day the children got to share a school experience with their billets, where they participated in maths competitions, reading and grammar activities as well as physical education classes. After their busy day, shopping was next on the agenda where they were able to see the range of shops that were available in a major city. The billets recommended taking them to a smaller shopping centre as the main street would be to over whelming. Saturday morning was off to cold start as the children had the opportunity to be involved in an Auskick Centre. Here they were shown a range of activities which were based around the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which was then followed by a game. From here they went to the Melbourne Zoo, where they were amazed by the range of animals which they had never seen before. The highlight for most of the children from Belyuen was the grid game at the Telstra Dome on Sunday. All of the children on the exchange were able to play at half time during the North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs game. They were blown away by the size of the stadium and the number of people there watching them. Overall this exchange program was a once in a life time experience for the children and something that they will not forget. They all did a great job for their age and being away from home for the four days. They were able to adapt quickly to the different surroundings and adjust to living with complete strangers. The experiences they were given are irreplaceable. 7
