Parent Newsletter Headlines January 2019 I hope everyone survived the January blues and isn t it great to see daylight again before and after school! Thanks to parents for their patience over the school closure for the snow last week, hopefully, we will avoid any further weather of that nature. It s a bit scary to think we are already in the second half of the school year but the good news is we are making excellent progress on recruitment for September. With full teams in Maths and Science already, 2 appointments in English and rolling interviews for Music, PE, History, Geography, and Business in full swing. We are also recruiting an Assistant Head so the student selection panel will be keeping very busy! Congratulations and commiserations to the Girls U14 football team who fell at the quarter-final stages of the National Cup this year. I know they were hugely disappointed not to hold onto their title but the weight of that had been heavy on them. Now they are free to bounce back again in true Bohunt spirit next year with renewed determination and freedom. Their achievements remain an incredible tribute to how far we have progressed and that working together there are no limits to what we can do. On that note now is a suitable time to ask parents to ensure they continue to support us with the basics and uphold the policies and procedures that make us the school we are. Most importantly I ask that parents remember that the school and what it does is built around the hard work and commitment of staff and that s what makes the school special. Our partnership working together is the key to continuing and growing this further. I would again like to ask parents to put yourselves forwards if you yourselves or through connections can be involved in our careers programme as we seek to grow this. It is important our students start to engage with the world beyond school to realise the importance of the skills we are developing with them at school and external visitors can often help our students to see the significance of these simply by being a new face. Please contact the main office if you feel you may be able to help. Thanks to the Y8 Parents who attended the Careers information evening ahead of the options process. I hope it helped provide valuable background to the important decisions you and your child will be making later this term. The straw poll from students was useful to help us ensure we staff appropriately for September and the options booklet will be available from half term. Parents who expressed an interest in an interview will be contacted in due course and then the big subject parents evenings in March will be the time to really discuss with staff the choices your child is thinking about making to make sure those decisions are the right ones. Ben Godber. 1
Chichester Holocaust Survivor Trip On the 16th of January, GCSE History students were taken to Chichester to meet Steven Frank a child Holocaust survivor. We drove around two hours and a few minutes walk until we arrived at the Chichester cathedral. We were soon welcomed by a staff member who told us our itinerary. For the first session, we were offered a workshop in collaboration with Amnesty International. It was entitled We Are All Born Free: Understanding the origin and legacy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. During this workshop, we learnt about what Human Rights means and how they are shown. We were soon lead to an activity where we picked out pictures where human rights were either enjoyed or disrespected. We were also given a copy of a booklet with all the 30 simplified articles of Human Rights. For example article 1 states All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. The workshop had ended when we were brought down to see the Cathedral s Amnesty Candle that was installed to mark the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in An hour or so later we were taken to the workshop room to Meet the Holocaust Child Survivor - Steven Frank. His talk was about how life was like as a child during the Holocaust. He made his talk in four chapters : What life was like before the Germans invaded Holland, being a Jewish after they invaded (e.g. schools, home living etc ), The first Barracks and his family, and living in the camps. It was very interesting talking to someone who experienced this story first hand and to learn about what it was like through his eyes. During the day I have learnt about the articles of the Human Rights and that although the human rights are there and are the foundation of most laws, they are not fully laws on their own and in some countries are not followed at all. The talk really impacted me as a student as Steven Frank went into such detail that it made his experience come to life and made it real, not just something that we learn in history lesson.it also gave me an insight into the struggles of living as a child in the Holocaust. 3 Parent Involvement with Careers Development Dear Parents, We are keen to develop the exposure our students gain of the world of work and would like to make more opportunities for groups of students or even whole cohorts to hear from people about work, the workplace, skills, and qualities that people need in the workplace and/or to be inspired/informed about careers and types of work that people do. If you yourself would be willing to be involved in this in some way or instead know of friends/colleagues who you think it would be good for our students to hear from, we would be delighted for you to approach us. We know that we have a growing and diverse background of parents with experiences and links into a wide range of areas and although we don't want them becoming obsessed with the world of work too early, it s important to remind the students that education is the platform for preparing them for future life. Please info@bohuntwokingham.com if you feel you could help. Many Thanks. Ben Godber. Children s University C hildren s University is a scheme that helps to promote learning outside of school hours and links in with our extra-curricular clubs that we run. Students gain attendance points for each club that they sign into which allows them to graduate in a ceremony at the end of the school year. This ceremony will take place on Wednesday 3rd July at 3.30pm in the school hall. We are very fortunate that we have Professor Robert Van de Noort, Acting Vice-Chancellor attending as our guest speaker and to present the students with their certificates. Students work their way through the programme, starting with a Bronze Award for 30 hours of extra-curricular activity. All students in Years 7-9 are eligible to take part and letters will be coming out in the next two weeks if your son or daughter has already reached one of these awards, to allow you to save the date! There is still plenty of time for them to reach the next milestone or for students to gain their Bronze Award so please do keep encouraging them to sign into the clubs that they attend. 3
enjoy respect achieve Girls Football - National Cup Update This month has seen all girls teams in National Cup action. 29 students represented the school across the three teams in this round of matches. There was only a handful of schools across the UK who still had three teams in the National Cups coming in The U12 Girls played against St Helens and Katherines School in Round 3. It was a tight game with both teams having chances. St Helens took the lead but Bohunt equalised before half time through E.Collin. Into the second half and St Helens took the lead and despite the Girls best efforts they were unable to get back in the game and it ended 2-1 to St Helens. The Girls now look ahead to the Indoor Regional Tournament at the end of January. The U14 s have made it through to the Quarter Finals following a 2-0 away win against Wootton Park School in Round 6. It was a tight game but the Girls class showed in the end with goals from M.Thomson and E.Bryson-Berga. The Girls have been handed a huge task in Round 7 as they travel to The Thomas Hardye School (Dorchester) who have beaten other teams on route to this stage with ease. This game is due to be played on Monday 4th February. Mr Campbell Meanwhile, the U13 s and U14 s are both still going in the National Cup. Big games ahead for both teams! The U13 s have progressed to the last 16 (Round 6) following a 4-1 win against Glennmoor Academy, M.Thomson (3) and M.Steadman were the Bohunt scorers. The team have been handed a home tie against a tough Chesham Grammer School in the last 16 and will be played on Friday 1st February. 4
Other Sporting Achievements and Success Futsal: This month we hosted the year 5 & 6 girls for an externally run futsal tournament. With our double sports hall, we have the ideal facilities to host a tournament like this. 7 of our year 8 football team were drafted in as referees to officiate the games. M Smith, J Weaver, A Saliba, B Emery, N Parsons, N Barrows, and Nl Muza did a fantastic job ensuring the games ran smoothly and were officiated to a high standard. The boys stayed right until the end and congratulated the eventual winners. Mr S Duff Ashiley has stood out in attack scoring 8 goals in 3 matches. His new partnership with Woolston is proving fruitful for the team. The midfield of Cann, Garlinge, and McDougall offers pace and physicality with all 3 boys also finding the back of the net so far. Captain James is marshalling the defence well (partnered with Sellars and May) and Zimmerman has been a rock in goal, helping the team with assists from his ranging goal kicks. U12 Boys Football: The start of the U12 s Football season has seen over 40+ boys attend training each Monday. The season will continue until just after the Easter Holidays with County Cup, EBSFA League, and the RSFA League fixtures all to play. The A team enjoyed a productive December and a positive start to the year, picking up 3 wins and scoring 18 goals. 10th Dec: 7 v 0 Westgate, 13th Dec: 7 v 2 Emmbrook, 15th Jan: 4 v 1 Shiplake The B team had their first taste of action against Shiplake on the 15 January. The boys put in an outstanding performance, with a number being called up to the A team for the match against Reading Blue Coat on the 25 January. The 8-1 win featured 2 goals from striker Rane. The midfield rounded off the remaining goals with Foley scoring 4, Lincoln and Preedy both finding the back of the net once each. The B team is in action against Reading Blue Coat and Reading Boys before the Half Term Holiday. 5
Sporting Matters Spain 2020: Following a successful Tour to Holland in Easter 2018, the PE department will be running a Netball and Football Tour to Costa Brava in Spain. 90 places are currently available for the tour that will combine sport (playing and training) with a visit to the Nou Camp, a day in Barcelona, some time on the beach and a day in a Water Park. Kit Sponsorship : After successfully gaining sponsors for a number of our Team kits this year we are offering the opportunity for companies to sponsor our new kits for the academic year Sponsors: U14 Football: Golden Pot KS4 Girls Football: FAB Academy U14 Rugby: Russells Mobile Homes U16 Athletics (Boys and Girls): Crest Nicholson Available kits for : KS3 Girls Football: Away Strip KS4 Girls Football: Away Strip KS4 Boys Football: Away Strip KS3 Girls Rugby KS4 Girls Rugby U15 Boys Football U15 Boys Rugby U16 Basketball ( 250) U16 Netball Sponsors will contribute 400 (unless stated otherwise). In exchange the logo of the sponsor will be displayed on the front of the playing kit and the school will market the sponsor in twitter posts and school newsletters (when the appropriate team is the topic of the article). The kits will be in circulation with the identified age group for approx 5 years. 6
Will You Add Bugs to your Diet in 2019? Every week as part of the tutor programme we take part in Votes For Schools. This gives us the chance to discuss and think about a wide range of topics. Last Thursday on the 10th of January, my tutor group tried the bugs that were discussed in the Votes For School topic of the week. A few people did not try the bugs as they did look a little unappetising. Most people, however, were intrigued about the bugs and tried them. I tried a cereal bar type one, which was made with normal ingredients except there was cricket flour in it. It tasted ok when you eat it bit by bit. I suggest that you don t eat it whole, as it became a bit too powerful to me. I would suggest it to anyone who wants to be healthy. L John 7
Hello Roboteers First Lego League 2019 This year, all the Robotics teams had to work extremely hard to represent Bohunt School Wokingham at the First Lego League There were five teams competing against each other at Robotics club, and it was a very close run contest. The teams who took part were: Clutch Power, Robotniks, Pluto Bot, Bobots, and JJNN. Teams needed to produce a space problem solution in the form of a presentation and a model. As well as completing a number of tasks using their own unique robot design. The robots were equipped with a variety of engineered parts including, hammers, lifting arms, and tracks. Robotniks(15 points) and JJNN (10 points) secured their places to take part by successfully completing two clean runs and each being awarded 25 points for their excellent presentations. Robotniks team: A Dixit, J Martin, and O Woodhouse. JJNN team: J Anderson, J Parnaby, N Robinson and N Ellison. Refinements were made and before you could say Robotniks it was time for the League. The event had a very different set up to the competition in Bristol last year, as it had a viewing platform above the gaming boards. This meant that everyone could watch the runs clearly. Competition was fierce and both teams did their very best. Students left with their heads held high and with big smiles on their faces as they had both achieved a respectable points. Large lessons have been learned this year and it has been agreed, by the club, that experimenting with sensors is the way to improve and move their designs forward. If you feel you could support the club with your robotics expertise and programming knowledge, join us on Thursdays after school. This is Mr Williams signing off. 8
