2 Dowling Medal Preview Here we take a sneak preview of the favorites for the 2011 Dowling medal and review the season that saw them emerge as contenders. Each player featured in the best regularly and here we have tallied their points on a 1-6 basis for their position in the best list each week Name: Tom Salter Games: 17 Times in Best: 11 Points for Best: 47 Season: Amazingly Salter did not feature in the best players for 2011 until round 8 against Southport. But from then on in until round 21, Salter was in the best every single week bar the Tuggerannong game in Canberra. The ultra fit Tasmanian wingman will go into the 2011 count as the red hot favorite. Name: Blake Pasffield Games: 18 Times in Best: 8 Points for Best: 36 Season: Already a dual runner up in the B&F can Passfield go one better? Like Salter had a slowish start to the season but finished in the best in all of the last five matches. Name: Jason Paxman Games: 18 Times in Best: 8 Points for Best: 33 Season: Paxman was a consistent performer right throughout the season taking a lone hand in the ruck for most of the year. He finished the season with two best on field performances which will see him challenge seriously at the top end. Name: Adam Mueller Games: 18 Times in Best: 8 Points for Best: 32 Season: The 2008 Dowling Medalist, Mueller had a somewhat opposite season to the other leaders, featuring in the best in eight of his first 13 matches but failed to make the list in his last five outings. Name: Scott Clouston Games: 17 Times in Best: 7 Points for Best: 17 Season: Clouston earned state selection in 2011 and is a real darkhorse for the Dowling medal. He kicked 20 goals in the first half of the season as a forward before being swung to centre half back in the second half of the season. Also made the QLD team of the year. Smokies: Other players who may feature highly are Josh Pullman who led the goalkicking with 50 majors, Ben Weightman and James Charleswroth who both bagged close to 40 goals, Trent Manzone and Brad Howard who both started the season on fire and defender

CONGRATULATIONS BOYS!

5 Tracking Redlands AFL Recruits Charlie Dixon Games: 10 Goals: 6 His first season at the top level was certainly a success but his body fatigued towards the end and he will have to work on his endurance in Dominated at NEAFL level in the last month of the season when playing down. Jake Spencer Games: 8 Goals: 0 Will be glad to finally put 2011 behind him and focus on With a new coach Mark Neeld appointed, the Pencil will have to force his way past Mark Jamar and Stefan Martin for regular games in the seniors. Josh Thomas Games: 0 Goals: 0 JT got close to senior selection but with a host of premiership stars returning for the Pies just missed out. Will look to get his first senior game early in 2012 and can hopefully stay injury free. Alex Sexton Games: 0 Goals: 0 Sexy has just been signed to a three year contract with the Gold Coast and will begin his first pre-season in November. Good luck Alex!

6 Grand Final Glory for Reserves The Redland Bombers savoured a special moment in club history when they posted a 37-point win over Southport in the QAFL Reserves Grand Final at Victoria Point yesterday.former Gold Coast Suns trialist Brad Rees was best afield as the Bombers survived a spirited Sharks fightback in the second term to win (95) to 8.10 (58). It was the club s first senior premiership since they joined the State League competition in 2000 and was a fitting if totally unrelated recognition for the excellent job they did in hosting the 2011 Powerade NEAFL Northern Conference Grand Final that followed.redland looked to have the game in their keeping early when the scoreboard showed 9.3 to 1.5 at the 11-minute mark of the second term. But Southport, who had come from seven goals down to beat Mt Gravatt in the preliminary final a week earlier, were not about to be denied. Again.They kicked the last three goals of the second quarter and the first three goals of the third quarter to cut the margin to nine points. Suddenly it was game on. And none answered the challenge better than Rees.The 19-year-old midfielder, who finished third in the Gold Coast s TAC Cup B&F in 2009 before playing three VFL games with the Suns in 2010, was a magnificent contributor around the middle of the ground and topped off his work beautifully around goals. Rees kicked Redland s 10th and 11th goals to stem the Southport charge after having bagged an earlier goal in his side s brilliant first term.by three-quarter time the home side had taken back the ascendancy, leading by 32 points, and they were never seriously challenged again.justin Carey sparked the early Bomber onslaught.having missed the first half of the season through injury after being a senior regular in , the powerfully built forward kicked three goals in the first term and could easily have had a fourth, having also hit the post.it was all about the Bombers most experienced and better credentialed players early.anthony Corrie, former Brisbane Lions and Collingwood AFL player, also kicked an early goal while looking dangerous up forward. Like Rees, he finished with three. Adam Oxley, a Queensland U18 representative in who has caught the eye of several AFL talent scouts, kicked the other goal of the first term and he also finished with three.redland led 6.3 to 1.5 at quarter-time and when Carey, Oxley and Corrie bagged the first three goals of the second term it looked like it was going to be a blow-out. But Southport skipper Jarrod Searle had other ideas. Having kicked his side s only goal in the first term he kicked two quick ones to spark a revival, and when Mitch Hopkins followed it was a slightly more manageable 9.3 to 4.5 at halftime.brad Scalzo, picking up a stack of ball around the midfield, opened the scoring in the second half ahead of Matt Fowler, another Gold Coast trialist, who was swung into the midfield by Southport coach Paul Marshall to good effect. Fowler kicked the Sharks sixth goal, and was followed closely onto the scoresheet by Fraser Thurlow, winner of Queensland s Most Valuable Player Award at this year s NAB Australian Under 18 Championships.Southport had kicked six unanswered goals, including three in three minutes, to pull within two kicks. But as quickly as they gained the momentum they lost it via Rees and his spirited Redland side.oxley kicked truly from 48m right on the three-quarter time siren to make it 12.9 to 7.7, and as hard as the Gold Coasters tried to rally there was nothing left.having conceded the minor premiership to Redland in the final round of the home-and-away season and then lost to them again in the major semi-final, it went on to become three Redland victories in a row against the Gold Coast powerhouse. Dalton Tucker, the State Under 18 captain, was judged best overall for the Sharks from former Gold Coast Suns signing Jesse Haberfield, Thurlow, Scalzo Brock Askey and Matthew Smith.Rees and Carey, who finished with a game-high four goals, were named best for Redland from Kyle Thomson, Travis Reynolds, Tyler Jones and Joel Conroy.Winning Redland coach Chris David acknowledged not just his 22 grand final players but the entire squad of 35 who were eligible to play in the Reserves finals.he spoke of the self-belief in the group in the lead-up to the grand final while also thanking his assistant coaches, the support staff, Redland president Colin Tobiasen and club development manager Craig Millar, and the ever-vocal Bombers supporters who turned up in good numbers for the early start. 11 Mystery Man? The Dirt - The Redland Social Page Welcome to another month everyone! Congratulations to the reserves boys on a great win! Well deserved and great to top of a great season. With the end of a season comes a few exiting players and we wish them all luck where ever they head to next. Now, it seems there's a bit of trend going around Victoria Point. A few of the kids on holidays having been knocking off a few garden figures and not returning them. Now it's all fun and games. But on a serious note, if you stole Alan Jenkins, the senior assistant coach could you please return him to the garden you took him from? It just doesn't look right with the bald headed centre piece missing from the small pond feature. If you don't have club favourite Jack MacDonald on Facebook, Mystery Man suggests you add him. There are a few FANTASTICALLY embarrassing pictures of the Mad Monday aftermath out the back of his place.
