4 A Message from the President I would like to extend a warm welcome to one and all on this the start of the 2017/18 curling season. A special congratulation goes out this year to the Ladies 100th Anniversary of curling at MWCC. As the compressors start and the ice begins to freeze, I want to thank Greg Kehoe, our Director of Ice, who spent many hours this past summer planning, coordinating, and implementing the first half of the two-year modernization and upgrade of our ice-making facilities. As well he, along with his hard-working group of volunteers, repaired, rebuilt, and painted most of the ice shed interior. One of the greatest assets of our club is the strong and active participation of so many volunteers. It has been a great pleasure for me to be working with so many dedicated and talented individuals. I would encourage everyone to volunteer, be it for a few minutes or a few hours. All assistance helps and is appreciated. Noteworthy events coming up shortly are: 4th Annual Golf Tournament & BBQ on Saturday, September 23,2017 Open House (general public) on Sunday Oct 1 st and Monday Oct 2 nd Junior Open House on Saturday Sept 30th President s Open Funspiel on Tuesday Oct 3 rd Opening Dinner on Saturday October 28 th I would encourage you to come out and support these events and show why the MWCC is one of the best curling clubs in the country. 14 Friday Night Curling Wilkinson / TGIF In 2017 we will decide on the composition of the Friday night leagues after we receive responses from the membership as to their interest in participating.. The Wilkinson Mixed League uses the format where two males and two females play on a team for the curling year. If the skip happens to be female, the second is also a female and the third and lead are males. Should the team wish, the skip position can alternate for any or all games. The TGIF has teams formed from all of the available players and the F/M composition of each team will be set by the coordinator in an attempt to balance the teams. Once the teams have played all of the other teams, a new session will begin and the teams rebalanced. On October 6th, Wilkinson games will start at 6:30 and TGIF games will start at 8:45 pm. The following week the TGIF will start at 6:30 and the Wilkinson will start at 8:45. The schedule will alternate each week for the curling season. Another tradition is that food is available from about 8:10 on because many players who start at 6:30 have not had time to eat before play starts and many people who start at 8:45 prefer to eat out on Friday evenings. We are looking for a coordinator for the TGIF league and would also need someone to coordinate the food this year and another volunteer to run the Half and Half draw each week. Please contact me to volunteer for these important positions. For more information or to sign up for Friday night curling, contact: Wilkinson: Jim Doyle < jdoyle@enviromark.ca > We look forward to filling 8 sheets on Friday night and having fun. Jim

15 Juniors Dear Junior Curlers and Parents: Welcome back to the Montreal West Curling Club Junior program. The season is about to begin and we are looking forward to seeing everyone. The Junior Open House is on Saturday, September 30 th from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The club s Open House is Sunday, October 1 st from 2-4 p.m. and Monday, October 2 nd from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Junior ice time is on Saturdays from mid-october through April. The MWCC Junior program has two sections: Little Rock and Big Rock. Little Rocks runs from 9:30 to 10:30. Big Rocks goes from 10:30 to 1 p.m. The practices blend skill development exercises with mini-games and are combined with in-house league play (the Myke Wilder League) in which all juniors can participate. MWCC juniors may also participate in various interclub events and bonspiels throughout the season. Below is an overview of the components of the junior program. Little Rock Program: Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Curlers from the age of 8 to 11 learn about the game from qualified coaches and volunteers. The primary focus is on ice safety and slide and delivery mechanics in order to give the curlers the best basis on which to build their game. Big Rock Program: Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Curlers 12 and up continue to develop their curling skills. Qualified coaches work on skills and strategy development. The coaches typically teach a skill or strategy for the first 60 minutes and then the curlers play a four-end game to further develop that skill. Myke Wilder Junior League: This is the MWCC Junior In-house league and is scheduled about 8 times during the season at the club during the Big Rock time slot. It is primarily for the Big Rock players but Little Rock players may also stay and play if they have the interest and stamina. During league weeks, games typically start at 10:30 a.m. and the curlers play 6 ends. Interclub competitions: Various curling clubs in the Montreal area host games for both Little Rock and Big Rock curlers. These clubs include Montreal West,

16 Pointe-Claire, Glenmore, Baie d Urfé, St Lambert, Mont Bruno and Laval Curling Clubs. Games are held at the participating clubs throughout the year on Saturday and Sunday. The schedule is currently under development and MWCC junior curlers are encouraged to participate at least once in interclub play. Other Bonspiels and Events: Various clubs and the local curling Branch organize bonspiels with different degrees of competition throughout the season. Two examples are the annual Quebec Games (very competitive) and Tim Caverly Christmas Bonspiel (fun competitive). The junior committee helps individuals/teams enter these events with qualified coaches as required and requested. The annual fees for juniors are $ Fees are payable by cheque (payable to the Montreal West Curling Club) or by Interac at the club bar. In addition, the Junior Board collects an additional $20 for each child which will be used to provide the weekly snack and special treats throughout the year. This $20 is payable preferably by cheque to the MWCC Junior Program. We encourage you to come out to the Open House and get ready for the season ahead. Please contact us with any additional questions. Coordinator Jim Cochrane or jim.ccr@sympatico.ca Member-at-Large Lester Shepherd or lestershepherd@gmail.com If you wish to help out on the ice or support the program in any way, please feel free to contact us.

17 Instructional The Montreal West Curling Club has, for several years, organized an Instructional Group to teach curling to new Adult members. This year we plan to continue this activity and it is operated on Monday evenings. The Junior program has its own instruction on Saturday mornings. The Instructional classes will start on Monday, October 16 th at 6:30pm and people attending can decide, after the first lesson, if they would prefer a later start on subsequent Monday evenings. In addition to the actual classes, the club provides people with curling equipment for their use while on the ice. Once someone is familiar with the game they may decide to purchase some or all of their own equipment. As you would expect, a curling rink is kept at a cool temperature. Please bring a warm jacket a fall jacket will be perfect, gloves and clean running shoes (cleaned and not worn outside) with rubber or non-slippery soles. Existing members can join the classes to work on Improving their technique starting in November. Jim Doyle jdoyle@enviromark.ca
