Editor: Mark Romer October is here. Time to swap the golf clubs for curling brooms. We all look forward to hitting the ice and making those great take-out shots. Once again this year we will be making this first edition of the ROAR shorter as there is only limited information to report. You will notice that the name at the start of the ROAR has changed. Our dedicated editor for the past quarter century, Jim Matchett, has decided to trade in his computer for a Netflix account and is handing over the editing duties to his apprentice. He will continue to be responsible for special features and for contributing jokes. On behalf of all members - thank you Jim. Farewell - ROAR After 24 years I have decided to end my time as the editor of the ROAR. As I approach 50, or thereabouts, years of age, I thought it was time to retire. I have been working with Mark Romer for the past 2 years in producing this monthly ROAR so I feel really good about leaving it in his very capable hands. It may seem like a long time doing the same job but, it was a labour of love. I wouldn't have done it if I hadn't enjoyed doing it. I always tried to keep it as informative and humorous as possible and I have made fun of a lot of people over the years. I'm sure they know I did it in fun and it wouldn't have happened if I didn't like them. Mark has asked me to continue supplying the bad jokes for the ROAR so you will not be getting rid of me entirely. I hope you have enjoyed reading the monthly report. I have enjoyed writing it. JIM MATCHETT (I must get that upper case key repaired. It continues to stick when I type my name.)
Remembering those who have departed this summer We are sad to report the passing of several club members who were active in the MWCC. Our condolences go out to their many friends and family. Bruce English July 6, 2017 Gabriella Gay RISK July 13, 2017 Evelyn LE HERON (no photo available) 1933 July 3, 2017 William 'Bill' GELINEAU, August 8, 2017 PATRICIA GRAFTON (Marsh), Nov 5, Aug 30, 2017 GREG STACHURA September 2, 2017 Last March, Greg & teammates succeeded in winning the Lakeshore Bonspiel (a first for the MWCC). The club has been presented with a ceremonial plaque which will be hung in the lounge.
Here's a message from our President, Douglas Allan: Welcome fellow members to the start of the curling year. During this season, we will be marking the centennial of the Ladies Branch of the Montreal West Curling Club. Plans are underway to make this once-in-a-lifetime event truly memorable. Of particular note is the Gala Dinner on December 2, 2017 as well as the Bonspiel on February 24, Further notices and exciting news will follow in the Roar and the Bulletin Boards in the Club so keep on the look-out. As the teams are being formed and the Leagues are preparing their schedules, I want to thank the many volunteers who worked throughout the summer to prepare our Club for the start of the season. Significant work was completed on the ice-making equipment as well as painting, repairing, and cleaning the building. A lot of work is done behind the scenes by a small but dedicated group. Next year will see the completion of our Refrigeration Modernization Program as well as the installation on new lighting in the playing area. We keep getting better and better! While many things in our Club may change, be replaced, or upgraded, the one thing that has remained constant has been the devotion, loyalty, and support of its members. For this I thank you, one and all. Who pushed the outhouse over the cliff?" asked the supervisor on the work site. No answer. " Who pushed the outhouse over the cliff?" Still no answer. You know, many years ago George Washington cut down a cherry tree. When his father asked him who did it he confessed. His father didn't punish him because he was truthful." OK" said one of the men. I did it." The supervisor proceeded to punch the worker in the mouth. Ow" shouted the worker. " But George Washington's father didn't hit him." He wasn't in the cherry tree when George cut it down."
MWCC Women s Curling Celebrates 100 years
100 Years of Women's Curling at Montreal West Here's a report from Joslyn Schultz: The Montreal West Curling Club was founded in 1912, but women s curling began in February 1918 with the formation of the Ladies Branch. During the season, the women of our club will be celebrating the centennial of women's curling at Montreal West, honouring the past, celebrating the present and promoting the future. As our club s only present day league exclusive to women curlers, the Women s Day League the Day Ladies is giving leadership to these celebrations. Several special centennial events are being planned, and the participation of all women of the club is strongly encouraged. The two main centennial events will be a Gala Dinner on Saturday, December 2, 2017 and a women s bonspiel on Saturday, February 24, Watch for details about these exciting events and mark your calendars! This is literally a once-in-a-lifetime event, as we will none of us get to celebrate the next centennial of women s curling at Montreal West; let s make the most of this one! Day Ladies Report Here's a report from Mary Sutherland: This season we are celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Women s curling at the Montreal West Curling Club. Six years after the founding of the club, women were granted ice time to curl but only on weekday afternoons and they were not allowed in the club on Saturdays. Times have changed and so on Saturday, December 2, 2017, all the women of the club are invited to celebrate 100 years of women's curling at a Gala Dinner. Then, on another Saturday, February 24, 2018, the Day Ladies are hosting a Centennial Bonspiel, inviting women from area curling clubs to celebrate with us on our ice. We will keep you posted on all our events so read the Roar and watch for notices around the club. The Day Ladies opening coffee party is on October 4th at 10 am. Come and sign up for curling on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Come also, if you are only able to curl on a few mornings as we would love to have you as a spare. Sandra Jones will be holding a clinic to perfect everyone's technique on Tuesday, October 10th and before serious curling begins, we will have a Fun Day on October 12th hosted by Bonnie Allen and Victoria Gomez. Happy Curling to All When it came to education, my father wanted me to have all the advantages he never had. So, he sent me to a girl's school. 5
Ladies Curling Association Here's a report from Angela Geoffredo: Hello to all curlers from the Ladies Curling Association (LCA). Another year has started for all curlers new and seasoned to participate in our various competitions. As the LCA rep for Montreal West, I hope that I can provide all club ladies information and incentive to play in some of the competitions throughout the year at various Clubs in Quebec and Ottawa area. Our first competition is the St. George, played at the Pt Claire and Lachine curling clubs in the Montreal region. This competition is open to all Ladies who are members at Montreal West Curling Club and any Club that is associated with the LCA. For those curlers ready to go, sign up a team by contacting me at a.geoffredo1@sympatico.ca Additional information can be found on the LCA web site, Mtl West web site or in the Day Ladies Locker room on the LCA bulletin board where you will see green sheets (available only by October 10) outlining all the particulars needed. St. George Composite rinks allowed (all levels of curling skills) No rated skips One day only 2 8 end games (Total points) Entry fee = $60 Lunch to purchase Date of Play = OCTOBER 30, 9:30 and 1:00 pm draw Club = Pt Claire, and/or Lachine (depends on number of entries) Happy Curling.. It took me three hours yesterday to stuff a turkey. I was so angry at the end, I could have killed it! A New LOGO to celebrate the 100th anniversary! The MWCC Board and membership are proud to celebrate the 100 th anniversary of Women s involvement at our club. To honour this event, we decided to produce a Logo which will be apparent under the Ice as well as in our publications and Social Media outlets. The idea for the Logo came from a pin that has been used by the Ladies Branch of the club for many years. We decided to add the French text and to make a more current version which replaced the word Ladies with Women s. Both versions will be used to honour all our past and present members. 6
Ice & Shed Here's a report from Greg Kehoe: Hello everyone...the curling season for some of us started in early August. We had our talented crew of volunteers that did a bang-up job painting the shed walls and side boards along with other much needed repairs and modifications. This year we took on a particular difficult project...we completely renovated the wooden framework to the front decking. My thanks to Jack Ford (Jack can repair anything) Eddie Jones (painter extraordinaire including t-shirts) Joe Balough (never ceases to amaze me of all the things he can do). This year we had some new members join the crew...the new Prez Doug Allan dug out his coveralls to help paint and assist in other areas. Gord Bowles came in to give us a good day's help. Martin Jacobs and Daniel Phillips were responsible for demolition/construction of the new framework for the front deck...these two big boys came in fully equipped and with help from Joe Balough did an excellent job that should last for decades. Al Kmec cleaned and marked all the club brooms for another season (as he does every year). The new chiller unit in our refrigeration plant was installed and then the two compressors were completely overhauled as planned. The compressors were fired-up for the season on the 5 th of September and even with the heat wave we've experienced lately, the compressors pulled the temperature down in the shed in a matter of days. Karl and Mirko have been hard at work preparing the ice for another great year of curling. One modification we did this summer was to install an audible alarm on the emergency door in the NE corner of the shed. We've had problems in the past with people leaving through the door and not ensuring the door is fully closed and locked. So beware as this alarm is LOUD...good curling everyone. There are 2 words in a person's life that will open a lot of doors for them...push and pull. 7
Building and Grounds Here's a report from Jim Doyle: Greg Kehoe and members of the Mixed Day Curling have been working very hard this summer to get the club ready for our curling season to begin. The wall in the shed has been repainted. There were no major Building projects this year and all of our efforts were put into the shed & ice plant improvements (described by Greg earlier) as well as improvements to the walkway from the garage to the inside of the club. In the lounge area, Anne organized the annual cleaning of the carpets and washing of the windows. A new security camera system has also been installed with cameras in all sectors of the club on a 30-day tape loop. A Note concerning Friday Night Curling Please note that unlike the past few years, there will only be one Friday Night Schedule this year - the TGIF group is being incorporated into the Wilkinson schedule and anyone that joins Friday night curling will have 2 options : [1] Play as a 4-person mixed team (FMFM/MFMF) and be eligible to compete in the Quebec Regional Mixed Competitions or [2] Play as a non-mixed team (any combination of M or F players) Any curlers who are not part of a team will be assigned to a team by Norm Savoie and those teams can play either in the Mixed format or not. ( Teams playing in the Mixed Format throughout the year will be competing to play in the Regional Mixed competition.) Our club will be represented in the Quebec Mixed Competition this year by the Philion Team of Marc Philion, Trish Dempsey, Daniel Philion and Dominic Jean who won the Wilkinson in April. Trish Dempsey is joining the organizers of the Wilkinson and has many ideas to liven up our Friday evenings. A man and a woman went to the check-in desk of a budget airline. Do you have reservations?" asks the clerk. Of course we have reservations" said the man. But we are flying with you anyways." 8
Entertainment MWCC Annual Golf Tournament The Annual Golf Tournament was held on September 23rd at the Caughnawaga Golf Club. Thank you to Mother Nature for a golfperfect day! Congratulations to the winning team Eddie King, Bruce Thomas, Hyun Lee and Michael Sinclair. Closest to the pin winner was Joe Balogh. Longest drive winner for women was Angie Marszalek and for the men Hyun Lee. The Bar-B-Q dinner that followed was delicious. Steaks and salmon were grilled to perfection by President Doug Allan and Marc David assisted by Chris Morrin, Gord Bowles and Mark Romer. A buffet table with an abundance of corn on the cob, baked potatoes and salads followed by apple crisp, ice cream and coffee ensured everyone was satisfied. Many thanks to Suzel, Anne-Marie and Sophie for making this social event a success and a special shout-out to the Clean-up Crew motivated by the master Ray DuBrule. 10 Public Service Announcements [1] Alcohol in the club The ice is back in the shed and we all look forward to celebrating our curling season together! Part of that celebration includes the consumption of spirits and alcohol. The Board of Directors would like to remind you that all alcohol found within the club premises must be purchased from our bar and bear the SAQ ID label. (see Bylaw below). A violation of this bylaw would result in the loss of our alcohol permit and this would have a severe impact on our financial situation and the happiness of our members. Since acquiring our new cash register, we have had an increased number of visits by the city inspectors and these unplanned visits often involve searches for untagged alcohol. Please do your part to keep our club liquid and keep all outside alcohol off the premises The holder of a permit authorizing alcoholic beverages to be sold or served may tolerate the presence of alcoholic beverages in his establishment only if such beverages were acquired, in accordance with his permit, from the SAQ, and bear the correct label.as well as that alcoholic beverages must be marketed by the society des alcools du Québec or are manufactured, or bottled and delivered under a permit issued under the Act Corporation alcohols Quebec (chapter S-13) [2] A few Words about Fair Play and the Spirit of Curling Excerpted from Oh sure, we all want to win. But we re also drawn to our curling clubs week after week for more than just those two hours spent on the ice. We come for the people, the socializing, the exercise the culture of our game. And that culture includes curling etiquette. A curling game starts and ends with handshakes. That may sound like a simple thing, but think of those heart-breaking losses or, on the other side, heart-lifting victories on the national and world stage. The most gracious winners and losers are the first to put out their hands to their opponents. Only after that ritual sign of respect can the celebration really begin. That same ritual governs the action at curling clubs across the country. We shake hands before and after the game, no matter whether it s a friendly jitney, a playoff-deciding league match, or a weekend bonspiel. For all curlers, it s Good curling! or Bon curling! and a firm handshake to start and end the action. The rule book might dictate where you can stand when the other team is throwing and who s allowed in the house when the score is being decided, but it s etiquette that shapes the game. Standing still when the other team is throwing and allowing the vices to tally up the score without interference from a gung-ho front end shows the players respect for each other and their roles. 10
The Canadian Curling Association s Curlers Code of Ethics says, in part, I will play the game with a spirit of good sportsmanship. We don t need referees to keep us in line; it s part of the game to referee ourselves on the ice. We do a darn good job of it, too. And although it might be tempting to let the adrenalin flow in a tight game, the expectation is that we will refrain from throwing our arms in the air and cheering wildly when the opposing skip misses that crucial last rock draw to the four foot. It s not just common courtesy it s simply curling etiquette. Sportsmanlike behaviour should be demonstrated both on and off the ice, the CCA s rules for Fair Play continue. This includes modesty in victory and composure in defeat. Okay, so if you win the Brier, Scotties, Worlds or Olympic gold medal, and your modesty slips a little, we might cut you some slack on this one! I believe that when my skip told me to stand still and be quiet all those years ago, he was doing me a favour. He was teaching me not just the rules, but also the traditions of the game: sportsmanship, courtesy and respect for one s opponent. And, of course, let s not forget that other important rule of etiquette. Winners buy the losers a drink, and the losers return the favour in round two. That is how the game is played, and we curlers wouldn t have it any other way. For more detailed guidelines about other aspects of curling etiquette, check out these guidelines written by EHL s Genevieve Lemieux : Curling Etiquette. A couple told their 7 year old that they were going to have to move because another baby was coming. Aw, that won't work. He'll just follow us." 11
