Seymour Football Netball Club Inc. President Craig Velt CLUB NEWSLETTER APRIL 2018 April News SFNC Season Launch & Jumper/Dress Presentation night Thursday 5 th April Join us for training, dinner and jumper presentation, including announcement of team captains. Commencing at 7.30pm with football Thirds, U/15 & U/17 netball 8.15pm netball B Reserve & B Grade 8.30pm football Seniors List and A Grade netball President s Message On behalf of the Seymour Football Netball Club, I'd like to welcome our supporters, sponsors and the local community to season Following on from a successful 3rd placing last year in the seniors and the retirement of Brent Colbert, the club has been delighted to appoint ex Richmond AFL player and former state level cricketer, Nick Jewell, to the senior coaching role for this season. Nick is highly credentialed, experienced, enthusiastic and brings a new game plan to the playing group. With some players making life choices to move from the area, off season recruitment has been a priority and includes retaining and return of some big name players for the club and we are feeling confident about this year. The reserves coaching role is yet to be filled but Rick Hager will again take charge as Under 18s coach with his young charges a year older and a whole lot stronger. On the netball front, we welcome U15 s to the GVL ranks. We have a strong coaching line up this year led by Laura Carland A grade coach, Marlee Koopman B grade coach and Sarah Szczykulski B Reserve leading the senior levels in the club league Wellman medalist Elle McDonald returns to the club to guide our younger charges as Junior Development Coach with Ellie O Sullivan U17 s and Courtney Aldous U15 s game day coaches. With excellent leadership, some 2015 A grade premiership players returning this year, new change rooms and court under construction we are very positive about our netball prospects for this season and into the future. Administratively, the Club is continuing to build on the good work done in recent years by the Executive and Committee. The 2018 Committee once again provides a wealth of experience across all facets of management, from finance to social. The theme for the club this year is the same as last year being One Club. Our Club is particularly proud of the positive way in which netball and football articulate one of the Club's main goals: to be a responsible and successful representative of Seymour. Seymour Football Netball Club acknowledges that it is part of the wider local community with obligations to the town that supports it. The Club provides a wonderful physical and social outlet for members of the community, young and old. We encourage players, members and supporters to be responsible and active members of our vibrant community. The Club values its sponsors and the support they provide the Club; equally valued is the loyalty and hard work of the many volunteers and supporters. Without this support and effort the SFNC can't survive as a successful club and would struggle to be a competitive force. Remember that success is not just measured by a
premiership flag on the wall; equally significant is the depth of commitment that comes from those who put in and what the Club is able to offer in return. The Club needs your input to ensure we meet your expectations through responsible management and responsive processes and procedures. There are feedback mechanisms available so, if the need arises, please provide feedback directly to a committee member or via the contact option within the website. As always, Seymour Football Netball Club is a social club and welcomes members and guests. We would be pleased to have you join us during the playing season, either on game days or on Tuesday and Thursday training nights. Home games provide the spectacle of top quality country football, along with the hospitality of our famous BBQ, Greggo's chilled beverages in the bar, Sue & Helen s well stocked canteen and Amy s coffee van for the caffeine tragics. On Thursday nights, Netball and Football training commences at 6.30pm, the bar is open and meals are served from approximately 7.00pm. Visitors, supporters and sponsors are most welcome to share our hospitality. Now, and throughout the 2018 season, I trust you find that The Lions Den website, combined with our Facebook page and newsletters, provide you with an insight into our club. Every effort will be made to keep you current with news and information. Once again welcome and thank you in anticipation of another successful year both on and off the field. Craig Velt President, Seymour Football Netball Club GO LIONS! Seymour Alternative Farming Expo Thank you to all the volunteers for their contribution over the 3 days. Good weather and bumper crowds, made it a great result for the club - one of the best for some time. New players in 2018 Aiden Adams, Alex Johnson, Josh Prudden, Chris Jackson, Kyle Winter-Irving, Alex Lockett, James Wooster, Grant Hateley, Seamus Feery, Cam Muir, Lachlan Watts, Harley Taylor Lloyd, Mat Martin and Todd Elton SPonsorships To sponsor a footballer or netballer for the season, contact Treasurer Ann Maree. Forms will be available in the next newsletter or on the website shortly HELP WANTED If you can help out on game day please contact a committee member. There are many jobs/duties to be done and if we can spread the load it helps enormously. Welcome news (stories by Gary Brown) Phillip Solomon Alick Nai Charlie Angka Muthli We are very excited to welcome Phillip, Alick and Charlie to the SFNC for season The talented youngsters are from Cairns and the Injinoo Community, Cape York, Queensland. The three boys are very promising footballers and we can t wait to see them in action! Welcome boys and GO LIONS!
Todd Elton It is with great pleasure that we welcome Todd Elton to Seymour Football Netball Club for the 2018 season. Todd was drafted by Richmond with the club's second pick and 26th selection overall in the 2011 AFL Draft. Todd made his debut in round 14 of the 2012 season, in a match against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium. Todd managed 10 AFL games over his six year tenure at the Richmond Football Club. Battling through injuries Todd was a versatile utility for the club and played almost every position in his time there. Todd was thanked for his time by Richmond at the conclusion of the 2017 season. He has agreed to make Seymour his 2nd club while he continues his VFL Career with the Frankston Dolphins. Todd s experience will be great to have on board for Age 24: Height: 197 cm: Playing Position: Ruck Forward Playing History: TAC Dandenong Sting Rays Richmond FC 10 AFL games 60 VFL games (Coburg and Richmond VFL) Welcome to the Den Todd! Go Lions! Lachlan Watts We are extremely excited to welcome back Lachlan Watts to the SFNC for season 2018! Lachy is a product of the Lions U/18s and had a break out season in 2005 winning the U/18 Best & Fairest by a streak! He made his senior debut in 2006 and was a quality senior player in the 2007 premiership year. Lachy has silky skills a strong set of hands and a great work ethic. He returns after a lengthy stint with the Dimboola Football Club where he was a key player in their 2013 premiership side! Seymour is very pleased to welcome Lachy and his young family to the Den. Go Lions! Seamus Feery Mr Seymour 2013 returns! The SFNC is very excited to welcome back to the Den a fan favourite. Seamus played his first game for the Lions in the U18 s in His senior career kicked off in 2013 however ankle and shoulder reconstructions in 2014 and 2016 hampered some of his best footy. A solid member of the back six, Seamus is hard working, skilful and has great vision. We are confident there is plenty to come from the original Mitts. Seamus spent 2017 with the Queanbeyan Tigers in the ACTFL and we are told his on field and off field game was strong. We look forward to seeing this rangy Lion roaming the back half once again! You beauty Seamus, and GO LIONS!
Football Under 18 football update: The thirds commenced their 2018 season with a practice match against Eaglehawk in warm conditions at Kings Park. With a number of players unavailable, it appeared we were going to be short of numbers, but a few calls to some mates and we managed to get 19 players together. The scene was set early by our onballers, with a strong attack at the ball together with good ball movement forward, we were able to kick early goals and take the lead. Eaglehawk started better in the second quarter and started to get some possession but we steady and regained control of the game. At half time the side was rearranged for players to have the opportunity to play in different positions. Whilst we outscored the opposition, our third quarter was a little untidy. In the final quarter both sides were showing signs of tiredness but our effort remained consistent. Our defence was excellent throughout the game together with some strong tackling, you could see a clear improvement from With what appears to be better numbers in 2018, this will provide real competition for spots right across the ground. Final scores: Seymour to Eaglehawk: Goalkickers - Hockley 3, Grant 2, Nai, Turvey, Jones, Collard, Sharp Overall many positives came from the first hit out, with 21 scoring shots Membership This year s card features club legends Mick O Donnell, Rhonda O'Donnell, Bluey Shelton, Jan Cresswell and Trevor Elliot. Memberships are currently on sale at the Club from 6pm on a Thursday evening. To purchase on game day, please make contact with the club Gate Keeper on your way into the ground and you will be re-directed with a gate deduction entry pass to see Treasurer Ann Maree at the club room s office where you will be issued your membership ticket. Family - $170 (2 adults) Single - $100 Student/Pensioner/Concession - $50 and GO LIONS! Our future depends on what we do today Go Lion
Vale Russell Cole Over the seasons the Seymour football Netball Club has been renowned to have many notable personalities in the club s proud history. In retrospect Russell Cole meets this criterion; there are many examples that serve to illustrate his love of the game and his passion for the SFNC. Russell first played senior football at the club in 1983 and retired in 1990 playing approx. 88 senior games. He finished third in the senior club best and fairest in both 1985 and 1986 and was appointed Senior Coach in It was also fitting that club assurance and tradition was the choice of senior coach Paul Cox, when Russell was appointed as his chairman of selectors in A great respected family man; loved husband of Donna and devoted father of Brittney, Gabriel, Darcey and Tom. The celebration of Russell's life was held at the SFNC clubrooms on Friday 23 March. Rest in Peace Russ, a true Lion.
