2 ANNOUNCEMENTS EMPTY PRESCRIPTION BOTTLES COLLECTION VERY SUCCESSFUL The Anglers Club collected at least several hundred empty prescription bottles for an area church. (We didn t count them but they filled a large garbage bag.) The pill bottles will be donated to rural hospital dispensaries in Africa that cannot afford to buy prescription bottles to use to dispense prescriptions to their patients. Thank you everyone who participated. DONATIONS NEEDED FOR OUR ANNUAL YARD SALE AUG. 12 We need more donations for our annual indoor yard sale, set for 8 am to noon on Friday, Aug. 12. You can drop off your donations during office hours. Items can include all kitchen and household items, such as small appliances, kitchenware and decorative items, children s games, books, and all kinds of fishing gear and tackle. No clothing please. CROSSWALKS REMINDER Now that the summer visitor season is here with many more pedestrians around, please obey the Pedestrian Crossing signs at the highway crosswalks in the Hatteras Island villages. Pedestrians have the right of way, and if you are pulled over for not yielding to pedestrians at the crosswalks you could be facing a citation and a fine of $188 plus a $35 processing fee for your lack of attention. JOIN US FOR BINGO If you are looking for something fun to do and want to get out of the house, join us for Bingo on Wednesday nights here at the club. Beginning June 1 Bingo will be every Wednesday through October 19. Games are all cash prizes, and we have hot dogs, soft drinks candy and popcorn available. Free coffee also! Doors open at 6 pm and games begin at 7 pm. Check the full 2016 schedule on the first page of the Bulletin. Our Bingo nights help fund our scholarship program and help enable us to make donations to a number of Hatteras Island non-profit organizations. SAVE YOUR BOX TOPS, SOUP LABELS AND INK CARTRIDGES We are proud to say that over the past 15 years the Anglers Club has collected 8,369 General Mills box tops and 6,946 Campbells Soup labels to give to the elementary school. In addition, since we started the used ink cartridge and toner program just last year, members have donated 103 used cartridges that we have forwarded to the school. The school receives $2 each from Staples through their Rewards Program. You only have a short time remaining to donate to the Campbell Soup Labels for Education. The Labels for Education program will end August 1. Check the LabelsForEducation.com Web site for more information. Please continue to save your General Mills Box Tops for Education. We donate them to the Cape Hatteras Elementary School. The elementary school gets 10 cents for each box top it collects and sends to General Mills. We need the box tops well before their expiration date to forward to the school to ensure that the school can redeem them in time. Once the expiration date is past, the box tops are no longer good. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE IS SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR CENTENNIAL The National Park Service is looking for local residents to help take part in the Park Service s centennial celebration by assisting with various jobs within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. 3 THREE ANGLERS CLUB MEMBERS HONORED WITH GOVERNOR S AWARDS Longtime Anglers Club members Ray and Claire Schaaf (center) and Sandi Jones Garrison (right) were recently selected for the 2016 Governor s Volunteer Service Awards for their years of volunteer service on Hatteras Island. For 15 years, Ray and Claire have volunteered many hours each day, seven days a week, with the Cape Hatteras Methodist Men s Food Pantry and Emergency Assistance Program. Through their efforts they have developed the food pantry into one of the best in eastern North Carolina. They are an amazing couple that exemplifies the true meaning of volunteerism, said Bonnie Bennett, program coordinator at Dare County Friends of Youth, as she presented the awards. Sandi Jones Garrison s primary duty was to perform direct volunteer hospice and respite care for patients and their families who are receiving Dare Home Health and Dare Hospice Services. She volunteered 343 combined hospice and respite hours during 2015, the highest number of hours ever recorded by Dare Home Health and Dare Hospice. Sandi also will receive the Governor s Medallion at a ceremony in Raleigh, given to only 20 recipients statewide. Also receiving a Governor s Service Award was Natalie McIntosh (left), who was recognized for her work with Hatteras Island Meals. CAPE HATTERAS ANGLERS CLUB AWARDS THREE SCHOLARSHIPS The Anglers Club awarded three exceptional graduating seniors at the Cape Hatteras Secondary School a total of $7,000 in scholarships at the high school s annual scholarship banquet May 31. Sixteen seniors from a graduating class of 30 applied for the scholarships. The Anglers Club scholarship committee selected Macy Quidley of Buxton to receive its $4,000 scholarship to attend a four-year school. Macy plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to major in biology on the premed track. Colby Ian O Neal of Rodanthe was selected for the $2,000 scholarship to attend a four-year school. Ian will attend Appalachian State University to major in physical education. Juanita Wage of Avon was awarded the $1,000 scholarship to attend a two-year school. Juanita has been accepted at the Cape Fear Community College, where she will major in business administration. She plans to transfer to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to finish her final two years. The Anglers Club works year-round to raise money to award the scholarships. Among the fund-raising events are the annual invitational surf fishing tournament each November that is billed as one of the largest in the world, and Wednesday Bingo nights at the club. The Anglers Club has awarded over $135,000 in scholarships since FISHING REPORT AND NEWS Over the past two weeks we have had scattered Blue Fish, Sea Mullet, Spanish Mackerel and the occasional Puppy Drum from the Hatteras Island beaches. On a good note there has been an occasional big drum caught. These were mostly caught late in the evening around the end closure ropes going toward The Point. On Ocracoke they have been catching some nice big drum on the North end as they make their move into the sound for the summer. The Cobia have been almost nonexistent from the surf with only a couple being reported, however the boats have been doing well on both the Cobia and big Drum inshore! Hopefully as the weather breaks the fishing will improve! Thanks to Milton Clapp for this report 6/2/16

4 MORE CHANGES FOR COBIA AND FLOUNDER IN NORTH CAROLINA NEW Effective May 30, North Carolina instituted a season and a new minimum length for Cobia for recreational shore and pier anglers. The Cobia season will close Sept. 30and the new minimum length is 37 fork length, up from 33. The state changed its bag limit for Cobia to one per day in April. Flounder season will close Oct. 15. Minimum length remains at 15 total length with a bag limit of six flounder per day per person. MEMBERS FISHING CONTEST MODIFICATION Due to the implementation of seasons for Cobia and Flounder, we have decided to modify the award criteria for those species from a weight measurement to a length measurement, which must be witnessed before release. This way, if one is caught it can be measured on the beach, witnessed, and then released if caught out of season. Also, we ve added an optional measurement category to the standings. If you catch a fish that is awarded by length, you can also record the weight of your catch, if available. The same goes for fish awarded for weight. We will record the length if you have it.
