1 THE CLUB AT 12 OAKS MEMBER NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2015 Greetings from the GM s Office Mike Biscotti, General Manager Mike Biscotti Despite the wet conditions, the 2 nd Annual Fall Festival was well attended, with families enjoying food and beer tastings, as well as festive games and activities. The 12 Oaks Haunted Trail was full of spooky fun! We want to thank Kris Henke and the volunteers for the countless hours they put into this event, without them it would not have been the success that it was. We are working with Talgrace Media and Marketing to design a 12 Oaks app that will allow you to pick and choose which information you would like to receive from the club. More information on this app will be shared in the coming months, until then remember to check the calendar and your weekly s so you don t miss out on club events. Thank you for being a member. 3 Golf Maintenance - James Reese, GCSAA Class A Golf Course Superintendent We were pleased that the Member-Member Tournament went well and were happy to hear that the weekend was enjoyable! With the fall weather, we are shifting our focus from mowing everyday to keeping the leaves under control. The cooler weather often brings frost delays. The USGA explains the importance of frost delays as follows: Frost is essentially frozen dew. Ice crystals visible on the outside of the plant can also form on the inside of grass blades. The grass plant, normally resilient to footsteps or cart traffic, becomes brittle and fragile when ice crystals form. Under the pressure of traffic, ice crystals puncture living plant tissues and rupture plant cells. Damage will not appear right away, but it will show up in footsteps and tire tracks the following days as the plant is unable to repair itself and begins to die. Frost damage can occur on any turf grass mown at any height but it is amplified when the plant is mown low, as on a putting green. In a best-case scenario, damage will be limited to leaf blades only, which will eventually disappear once active turf growth resumes. However, if the plant crown, or growing point of the plant, is compromised, damage will be more severe and recovery could take months. Keep in mind, a foursome typically takes several hundred footsteps on each green, so even allowing just a few groups to play when frost is present can be very damaging to the greens, and the rest of the golf course for that matter. It is not completely understood when frost will cause damage, so the decision to keep traffic off the golf course must be made conservatively to protect the condition of the course. For this reason, golf facilities are wise to close the course to play or delay starting times until frost has completely melted. Join us on Wednesday, November 11 for our 2nd Annual 12 Oaks Veterans Day Classic, as we host both active duty military and veterans for a day on the course. Sign up to play with a group or become a sponsor. Details are available on the calendar section on the 12 Oaks website. Don t miss our first ever 12 Oaks Toys for Tots Tournaments. Help the staff collect toys this holiday season by playing in a fun event! Your entry fee is an unwrapped toy or $25, and details are available on the calendar section of the 12 Oaks website.

Member-Member Tournament 2015 Member Member Champions Billy Duerbig & David Blackmon Member-Member Tournament The Main Event Member-Member Tournament was held October 17 &18.

Each of the flight winners advanced to the Championship Shootout beginning on the 10th hole.

On the Par 3 11th, defending champions Tim Driver and Brian Urban made a par, which was matched by Championship newcomers Bill Duerbig and David Blackmon, setting the stage for the two teams to play

The golf course was in perfect shape for the Championship, and after 36 holes of team competition, 7 flight winners were determined. Each of the flight winners advanced to the Championship Shootout beginning on the 10th hole. Highlighting play on the 10th was Dave Kinnard, who holed a bunker shot for a birdie to help his team advance to the 11th hole. On the Par 3 11th, defending champions Tim Driver and Brian Urban made a par, which was matched by Championship newcomers Bill Duerbig and David Blackmon, setting the stage for the two teams to play the final hole. David Blackmon calmly rolled in a 4 ft. par putt to win the hole and earn the coveted Championship belts for the year! 5 Events & Activities - Rachel Roos, Lifestyle Director We started the 2 nd Annual Fall Festival off with a Family Pumpkin Carving Event, giving members the opportunity to show off their artistic abilities and yielded some fantastic pieces of art. Congratulations to the first place winners, Jeff Brown, Paula Stapleton, and Jayden Brown, for the Ortho Pumpkin and to our runners up, the Staubus Family and the Brooks Family. The 2 nd Annual Fall Festival was enjoyed by many in spite of the rain. Members and guest enjoyed a mechanical bull, Putt Putt, sumo wrestling, and excellent food from a variety of food trucks. Over 100 members gathered on the lawn to enjoy perfect weather, S mores and each other s company on October 23rd. We wrapped up our month with the 12 Oaks Haunted Trail. Nearly 1100 members and friends enjoyed this event with all proceeds going to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Thank you Kris Henke and the volunteer committee for their hard work and dedication to making this a successful event. The Club at 12 Oaks will be hosting the 1 st Annual Turkey Trot and Food Drive benefitting Inter-Faith Food Shuttle s Backpack Buddies program on November 21. Fitness classes are $8 per class; please purchase a 5 class Fitness Punch Pass from the Pro Shop. At this time, we do not have the facilities to offer childcare during fitness classes. However, for Zumba classes only, Angela is open to allowing younger children sit in the back of the room if they are occupied and well behaved with the understanding the safety and enjoyment of the participants is our primary focus. If a child should become disruptive or distracting, we ask that you remove your child. Cashman Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Chef Chad has called North Carolina home for more than 30 years. After working in interior design for the majority of his career, Chad decided to follow his passion and pursue the culinary arts. That decision came with a lot of sacrifices, says Chad, But I knew exactly where I wanted to be in the culinary field. After graduating from the International Culinary School at the Art Institute in March of 2012, he has focused is talents on the country club atmosphere and fine dining establishments. A Message from Chad C. Cashman: It is an honor to have such a creative culinary team.
