SUNLAND GOLF NEWS Sunland Golf & Country Club OCTOBER 2016 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE I hope you are all aware of the new "Make Mike Smile Capital Fund Drive." Just in case you missed the kickoff party, here is why we started the drive the financial condition of the club has greatly improved over the last two years, but we are still suffering from a lack of funds during cost cutting times. One area that was impacted the most was golf course equipment. We made do with old equipment that was in need of constant repair, costing money and man hours. Our Golf Course Superintendent, Mike Snyder, has determined that we need a new rough mower, which will cost about $35,000. We don't have enough money in the Capital Fund to cover this expense. The Capital Fund Committee decided this was a good cause, and to start a new fund drive. I hope that all of you will be able to make a contribution. Keep your eyes on the Capital Fund Thermometer in the Members Lounge to watch us reach our goal. Regarding Capital Fund needs, the club house and parking areas have needs that must be addressed also. I have sent out a letter to all SunLand residents asking them to consider contributing to the Club House Capital Improvement Fund. None of the revenue from this fund will go towards the club's operating or golf course expenses. Thank you for your consideration, and enjoy your club. Fritz Field, President GENERAL MANAGER S REPORT As you know we ve launched a Capital Fundraiser for the new full size rough mower. If you have any questions please let Michael or me know. Recently we purchased a rough trim mower and 2 utility vehicles for the maintenance crew through the Capital Program. Also, after lengthy research and quote process, we have agreed to install new heat pumps for the poolside and banquet rooms. The projected install date for the heat pumps will be 10/4 or 10/18 This will depend on the arrival of the equipment. Thank you to the Capital Committee and Members who have donated to the Capital Program to make these projects happen. At the Annual Meeting we discussed launching an Ambassador Program to help retain members and grow our membership. Membership Chairman Roger Lucas has launched the program and soon the Ambassador Team will be formed. If you have any questions please let me or Roger know. In August, the golf shop started a new tournament series called Friday Night Fairways. So far it has been a success. Participation growing and golfers are eager to see what the game of the week is. Oct 21 st is the popular format - 1 Player Scramble - will be the game. If you are wondering what a 1 Player Scramble is, you get 2 shots every time. We are sad to see one of our team members retiring. Bob Eichhorn has decided it is time to travel more with his wife and enjoy retirement life. Bob will missed, he was truly an employee every company wished they had. Bob we thank you for all your work and mentoring for the team. Tyler Sweet, PGA General Manager Deadline for the November 2016 Newsletter will be October 15, 2016

TURF TOPICS It has been a tough year on the gear. Earlier in the spring I presented a slideshow at the annual meeting summarizing the past year and offering some projections for the coming year. As part of that presentation I commented on our equipment situation, making mention of the need to start replacing some of our fleet. Little did I know at that time, the difficulties we were to face over the summer. This past growing season has been marred by a rash of equipment breakdowns that kept us scrambling just to keep the course mowed. The root of our problem is that much of our equipment has just been kept for too long. When a mower breaks down, not only do I have to commit more labor in the shop to correct the failure, but the mechanic is spending his time making the repairs instead of keeping the other mowers properly adjusted. Subsequently course conditions suffered. Considering the severity of equipment failures this season, I took my concerns to the Capital Committee. After much discussion, the Committee once again showed their support and agreed that allocating Capital Funds toward continuing improvement in course conditions was a worthwhile investment in growing membership and securing the future of the club. While some of our equipment needs have been met with existing funds, the Committee suggested launching a fund raising campaign to purchase another mower. The campaign kicked off on September 23 rd and we are now on our way toward the purchase of a Toro 4700D. This is a highly advanced machine that will enable us to cut large areas of turf faster, more efficiently and with a higher quality cut than the units we currently use. On behalf of the entire golf course maintenance team I wish to extend my thanks to all who attended the kickoff and to all our members who contribute to our Capital Fund raising efforts. Michael Snyder Golf Course Superintendent TREASURER S REPORT Our financial reports ending 8/31/2016 indicate a rough month for the Club. Our income of $43, was under our budget by $6, Our expenses for the month were $97, which is $10, over budget. From a net viewpoint for the month, we had budgeted a loss of $36, and experienced a loss of $53, That means we lost $16, more than we had hoped for. The largest issues for the Club are $5, less income from the Administration Dept. That is all in dues shortages against budget. We also experienced higher than budgeted equipment repairs and course payroll for the month. The Clubhouse also experience $2, in repairs and maintenance over the budget. Enough details, it was a tough month financially speaking. From a year to date perspective, this month put us below budget by $16, That is almost exactly the amount we experienced for the month. That stands to reason as our July financials put us right on year to date budget. I know all of you kept my report from last month? The departments with the largest deficit year to date are the Clubhouse and the Café. The good news is we are only 5 months into the year and plenty of time to rectify the ship, so to speak. Bill Engle Treasurer Page 3

HOUSE COMMITTEE The Hawaiian BBQ had a good turn out and many favorable comments were made about the delicious food. The entertainment was fun. Kudos to the men & women who got out on the dance floor and showed off their hula moves. Great job everyone! Another event to mention was the Wine Tasting event organized by Pam Grandstrom. Much goes into putting an event like this together. A BIG Thank You Pam, to you and your committee, along with all the other volunteers, who worked many hours to make this event a great success. Thanks to those of you who took the bartenders class and earned your WSLCB license. Many of you have already stepped up to volunteer for various events. It won t take you long to master the pouring of spirits, and it is a great way to get to know our members. Speaking of bartenders, we are losing our scheduler, Bob Eichhorn. I want to take this opportunity to thank him for doing such a tremendous job in scheduling the bartenders for all our social events. I know this was just a small part of what he has done for our Club, and he will truly be missed. We have many upcoming social events, such as; the return of Movie Night, another Travel Talk, a Wine Pairing dinner, more Seahawk game parties, and our last Birthday/Anniversary Bash for the year, just to name a few. Check out the Calendar of Events for the dates and times. Hope to see you at the Club, M.J. Anderson, House Committee Chair GOLF COMMITTEE By the time you read this article, the Sunland 2016 Competitive Golf Season will be history, and we will be looking forward to Many of our members will be departing for warm weather locations, while those of us who spend the winter here in Sunny Sequim will continue to brave the elements and enjoy the game of golf and social activities. Others will pursue other interests and hobbies. The biggest golf social event during the Winter Season will the 6 th Annual Golf Fun Night, which will be scheduled during mid to late January. This event is open to golfing members, social members, SG&CC employees, and guests. You don t have to be a golfer to participate as the Golf Shop will mix golfers and non-golfers to create foursomes. More information on exact January dates will be forthcoming. As a reminder, those of you that have monetary credits in the Golf Shop have until the end of the calendar year to spend your winnings. Shop early and avoid the rush! Thanks and Cheers, Dan O Claray, Golf Committee Chair Page 4 -

I do hope that everyone who played enjoyed themselves and Ladies we will look forward to next year. Due to a full agenda of golfing activities there will not be a Mixer/Field Day in September. The August Mixer was won by the team of Tom Chirhart, Mike Main, Bill Engle, and Tom Caufield. Taking second place was the team of Jay Tomlin, Dan O Claray, Ed Jones, and Don Claussen. 6 EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION Congratulations to Kyle Kiesser, our second recipient of the Employee Recognition Award. In just over a year, Kyle has established himself as an essential part of the golf course maintenance team. Kyles consistency, dependability and willingness to tackle any task serves as an example to us all. For his dedicated service to the club Kyle has been presented with a gift certificate to the Dockside Grill. His name will also be listed on a plaque displayed in the clubhouse. Thanks to all who contributed to the program. Look for our next award to be presented in December. Michael Snyder, Golf Course Superintendent DID YOU KNOW? COUPLES As this bulletin goes to press, our Couples' Championship tournament will have been in progress. Therefore, the winners will be not be in print until the Nov. Bulletin. Sorry about that. We had a very good number of players signed up to play and good weather forecast. Good luck to everyone! Nonie Dunphy, Co chair with Hilda Duncan LADY NINERS The Niners club held a Wine & Cheese get together on Thursday August 25th, hosted by Helga McGhee Greer. A fun time was had by all. Thank you Helga for being a great host. Lani Warren and Helga Greer formed the committee that put together our Field Day and luncheon September 1. The winners of the proxies were Gwyen Boger closest to the line, and Sue Fowler longest drive. Lani and Helga also provided delicious desserts. Many thanks to you both. September 8th was a mixer with the SWGA and a no host lunch. Another event with SWGA, on September 22nd, was a 18 hole par three course and a no host bar with snacks. Thanks to SWGA for putting these great outings together. October is a busy month. Our business meeting is on Thursday Oct. 13th. A short meeting will be held at 10am before golf. Our award luncheon will be in the pool side room on Thursday Oct. 20th immediately following golf. October 27 is the big Halloween tournament and the last official day of the golfing season. Kathy Tiedeman and Janice Orth are working very hard to make this a "spooky" day. Everyone is encouraged to come in costume. Thanks Kathy and Janice. Wishing you all a great winter and looking forward to seeing everyone next March. Gwyen Boger, Niners Club Captain Page 6 -

MEMBERSHIP The number of inquiries about joining Sunland Golf & Country Club has increased over last year. Please extend a warm welcome to our newest Associate Golfing Member, John O Rourke Jr. who joined in August. John is already actively engaged in the Club. This fall we will kick off the new Ambassador Program. The objective of this program is to ensure that new members have a positive and smooth integration into our Club. To accomplish this an existing member, (Ambassador), will be assigned to each new member or couple who join SG&CC. The Ambassador will help introduce our new member to our club, our members, and the various golf and social opportunities which we enjoy at SG&CC. Ambassadors will be from SWGA, Men s Club and the Couples League. While we will have designated individuals as Ambassadors, it important to remember that we are all ambassadors for our Club. It s our current members who make the difference. Thank you for all that you do in making new members feel welcomed and a part of our SG&CC Family. Roger Lucas NEW MEMBER INTERVIEWS by Monica Ostrom I had an interesting conversation with new social member Clark Reeves and his wife Austin. They are finalizing the renovations of their condo on Fairway Drive. Clark is an architect and Austin an architectural designer (they met sitting in side by side cubicles), so nothing will be overlooked. But they are not newcomers to Sequim. They previously owned homes and acreage on the corner of Woodcock and Sequim Ave. They thought it would take a wile to sell, but it sold long before they were ready to move. Over the years they have owned and rented out several homes in Sunland. They always knew they wanted to eventually retire here, but the timing wasn't exactly convenient. However, they are happy to be well on their way to settling in and meeting other club members. We're pleased that you folks finally found your retirement home with us. Welcome to Georgina and Larry Batson, new social members at the club. In short, they lived and worked in the Salem/Albany/Corvallis OR. area in the 2,000's. They then moved to their retirement home in Port Angeles in August of Soon discovering that the larger, 2 story home on 5 acres was too much work they decided to downsize last year to Port Hadlock. Upon reconsideration, Sequim was a better fit for their lifestyle, not to mention connections they still had in Port Angeles, (e.g., Larry golf/tennis, Georgina, Elks Club line dancing among other activities). They now reside in a home on Leslie Lane. They are looking forward to making new friends and taking part in many of the activities Sunland has to offer. We're delighted to have you with us. Page 7 -

SUNLAND WINE TASTING On Saturday, September 17th, the ballroom was filled with the largest turnout ever 130 guests! Those attending enjoyed 27 great wines from 9 wineries through the state, Oregon and California. We also tasted specialty foods from WeDo Fudge Sequim; Mt Townsend Creamery-Port Townsend; and Chuckar Cherries-Prosser, WA. Sarah Shea and her three-piece band jazzed us the entire evening. Many thanks to our 14 volunteers for the night, the Sunland staff and the event planning committee: Cindy Ostrom, who prepared divine appetizers; Elaine O Brien set up the elegant ballroom; Rosie Tomlin created all our promotions, including two newspaper articles; Donna Carson helped with promotions and handled the after-event clean-up; Mandy Abrams processed all the paperwork mounds of it! Thank you to all these dedicated members. Proceeds from the evening fund future social events as the club.
