SUNLAND GOLF NEWS Sunland Golf & Country Club JANUARY 2017 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE There was considerable discussion at the December Board meeting about our reliance on fund raisers and donations versus dues increases or assessments to cover funding issues. The problem is at our current membership level, the dues would have to be increased considerably, and we would more than likely have to have an assessment. Both of which could result in reduced membership. That's the bad news! The good news is that our membership is growing which will allow us to grow the operating budget without major dues increases. We have a way to go, but we are heading in the right direction. We will be working on the budget over the next couple of months, and will address both staffing and capital issues. Another budget challenge will be how to address the new Washington State minimum wage of $11.00 per hour. Tyler is working on a plan that will allow us to comply with the new wage levels without having to increase dues, more to come at a later date. As most of you know the club relies very heavily on volunteers for a multitude tasks. The board discussed the idea of a "volunteer of the quarter program" and decided that we have so many hard working volunteers that it would be difficult to single out one member for recognition each quarter. That being said, I do feel that it's timely to single out one of our members for recognition. Cheryl Coulter is the outgoing SWGA Captain, and has just stepped down as the head of the Social Committee where she has spent countless hours at the club. Many thanks to Cheryl for her hard work. Rest up and spend some time with Jim. Fritz Field, President FROM THE EMPLOYEES Thank you to everyone who donated to the Employee Christmas Fund. Your generosity is a very special blessing during this time of year. It s always a joyful surprise and greatly appreciated by all. Sincerely, The Sunland Staff Deadline for the February 2017 Newsletter will be January 15, 2017

GENERAL MANAGER S REPORT Hello and Happy New Year! 2016 is in the books and has proven to be very successful year for Sunland Golf and Country Club. I would like to take this opportunity to recap the year and point out some of our successes as a country club. Between April and December 2016 our membership grew by 27 new members, which included 10 new golf and 17 new social memberships. We now have a total of 324 members at SG&CC. Keep in mind, those are memberships, not the total number of members. An important goal for 2016 was to update Capital items at SG&CC. This year we spent $74,933 on capital items which are as follows: $14,934 Toro Trim Mower $11,750 Utility Maintenance Cars $21,989 Ballroom and Poolside Room Heat Pumps $2,710 Office Photocopier $23,550 Toro 4700d Rough Mower In addition, we recently approved $5,000 from the Capital budget to replace the lighting in the Ballroom, Poolside, and entry way. This project is scheduled to start in January I d like to thank all members who have participated in the capital program through one-time donations and the monthly donation program. The Clubhouse looked wonderful over the holidays and this doesn t happen overnight. Cheryl Coulter and her committee did an excellent job decorating for the holiday season. Thank you Cheryl!! It was recently approved that the Washington State minimum wage will increase to $11 on January 1 st. This in an increase of $1.53 per hour. The department that will be most affected by this increase is the Food & Beverage. Our payroll will increase and so will the cost of food. At the current time we are looking at an 8-10% increase on menu items. Please expect this increase to go into effect on January 15, I hope all your New Year s resolutions include playing more golf!! Tyler Sweet, PGA Page 3

GOLF COMMITTEE 2017 Annual Sunland Golf Fun Night Will be held on Saturday, January 28, 5pm. Hole assignments for those organizations participating in the 2017 Golfing Fun Night are as follows: Hole: Social Committee General Manager/Staff Admin/Café Pro Shop Lady Niners Board of Directors Course Maintenance SWGA Men s Club More information on Fun Night rules, details, and signup sheets will be posted at the club in the next few days. Mark your calendars now before you forget! Golf balls will be provided by the Golf Committee. A limited number of putters will be available to share with your team should you need one. Weather Alert: It s Cold and Wet Out There: For those of you who have the courage and are brave enough to battle the winter weather to venture onto our fine golf course, please remember to respect the course and follow the inclement weather instructions that are posted in the golf shop. Also, please observe the caution flags present on each tee. A Flag System will be used to notify golfers of any course-wide restrictions. The system works as follows: If there is no flag displayed on the #1 Tee, golf carts should use the defined regular scatter system. If a Checkered flag is on display at the #1 Tee, only those golf carts that have been issued and display a checkered flag, (Medical Exceptions), may drive on the course. However, the person issued the medical flag must still follow the following restrictions: Follow the cart paths on all Par 3 holes, except for #1 Hole, and the area from the 150-yard markers through the green on #9 Hole. All other golf carts are to remain on the cart paths. If a Red flag is displayed on #1 Tee, all golf carts must remain on the cart path, including carts displaying a checkered Medical Exception flag. If course conditions permit, golf cart traffic is allowed on the fairways. For certain holes that may be subject to damage, those holes will display a Red flag at the appropriate tee box. Very Important! For all golfers, including those golfers walking the course, please do not walk on frost covered areas if possible. This could damage the grass growing underneath. Dan O Claray, Golf Committee Chair MEN S NINERS The recent weather has limited play for the Niners. Weather permitting, we are still teeing off every Thursday at noon. On behalf of the Men s Club Niners we hope you and your family had a safe and enjoyable New Year. Our expectation is that 2017 will be a productive year both on and off the course for all of us. Roger Lucas Co-Captain Men s Niners Page 4 -

MENS CLUB Roger Lucas, and Rick and Shannon Archbold were the primary force behind the Men s Club Christmas Tree this year. Our theme was honoring those who have served in the military. I want to thank all our members who provided the pictures to decorate our tree. But more importantly, we owe a deep level of gratitude to our veterans who served our country. I believe that is the reason our tree came out on top during the tree judging contest. I mentioned last month that we still had one position on the Men s Club Executive Board (MCEB) to fill. I am pleased to announce the Mike Schmidt has volunteered to fill our Assistant Captain position. The MCEB is busy preparing our budget for the coming year. We are allocating a good portion of the membership dues back into prizes for our events. We will also be spending some of the funds for the betterment of the Club. We have decided to sponsor one of the Employee of the Quarter awards. This is our way of saying thanks to our employees, and letting them know we appreciate their work and don t take them for granted. The winner for this quarter is listed elsewhere in this newsletter. Jim Harlan was a long-time member of the Men s Club. He not only had many friends here, but also in California. Jim s Californian friends made a donation to the Club in recognition of Jim upon his passing. Purchasing a kegerator to provide draft beer in the bar had been in the planning stage. Management with the consent of the Board, decided to apply the donation toward this purchase. Additional funding was needed so the Men s Club is contributing the balance as a gift to the Club and a remembrance to Jim. Jay Tomin, Men s Club Captain TURF TOPICS A Great Big Thank You. The holidays are always a time of reflection for me. Perhaps it s the spirit of the season, or maybe just the extra time I have to think about things. Whatever the reason, I seem to become more mindful as the holidays pass. As I sat down to write this article, I started thinking about all the nice things people have done for me. Not a day passes without someone saying good job, or the crew impressing me with their work, or a plate of cookies showing up on my desk. All around me are reminders of how nice it is to be here, so I thought I would make this article one big thank you letter. First off, I need to thank the members of the maintenance crew. These guys show up at the crack of dawn and are ready for whatever crazy idea I ve come up with for the day. To the management team, Tyler, Mandy, and Donna, thanks for all the help and support (and mini chocolate candies). To the staff in the kitchen and Café, thanks for the warm welcome each morning and for my special breakfast sandwich. To the members of the greens committee and the board of directors, thanks for listening to my informational ramblings and technical talk each month, and for supporting me through every challenge. To all our members who say thank you every day, and to those who have bought us breakfast, lunch, pizza, and even made us cookies, cakes and pies Thank you. To everyone who has contributed to the Capital Fund, the Christmas Fund, the Mower Drive and takes care of our needs Thank you. Finally, to our entire membership for making Sunland a great place to work. On behalf of the maintenance department I offer a sincere and enthusiastic Thank You! Michael Snyder, Golf Course Superintendent Page 6 -

MEMBERSHIP As we usher in the New Year please join me in welcoming the following new Social Members to our Club: Bob & Judy Reinking Susan Shawgo Richard Jones and Faye Croat Theresa and Bill Alcayaga Jean Wooldridge The Holidays are a time to reflect on the past year and look forward to the future was a year that presented both challenges and opportunities for our club. From a membership standpoint; in 2016 we saw growth in our membership which is a trend we expect to continue. The Ambassador Program is up and running, and we have a dedicated group of volunteers who are serving on the Membership Committee. We are positioned well as we take advantage of the opportunities and challenges that 2017 will bring. Happy New Year. Roger Lucas Membership Chair HOUSE COMMITTEE Happy New Year! I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and are looking forward to Thank you to the Social Committee, and all the ladies & gentlemen who volunteered their time to decorate the clubhouse for the holidays. It looked amazing. Also, thanks to everyone who helped decorate a tree for The Trees of Christmas. These trees were placed throughout the clubhouse, and were voted on at a function which included entertainment from the Rain Shadow Ringers, and songs by Dennis Blair. The tree that won was the Men s Club tree Honor Our Veterans. The Snowman tree, put together by the Lady Niners, coming in a close second. Congratulations to both groups. The announcement was made at the Club Christmas dinner, which was excellent. Thanks to Michelle, Lewis, Bernadette, and all the servers for presenting a delicious and enjoyable sit down dinner. New Year s Eve was our last fling of the year, with dinner, dancing, and ringing in the New Year on East coast time. We will start 2017 off with Steak Night on Wed. Jan. 11 th ; Movie Night on Fri. the 13 th ; Bingo on Mon. the 16 th ; Chix Flik on Mon. the 23 rd ; and then Fun Night on Sat. Jan. 28 th. There will be a Super Bowl Party on Feb. 5 th, which we hope our Seahawks will be in. We are planning a Mardi Gras party for Sat. Feb. 25 th and a Murder Mystery dinner is scheduled for a small group on Sat. March 25 th. Watch for more information about these and other upcoming events via your s, and on the Social Board in the hallway of the club house. Your Social Committee will be working on more events for the 2017 calendar. See you around the Club, M.J. Anderson, House Committee Chair Page 7 -

TREASURER S REPORT November was a very good month financially speaking. From a net standpoint we lost $32, with a budgeted loss of $39, So we gained $7, for the month. Year to date we are $26, below our budgeted income. That, when considered by its self, may seem to be trouble. Not so when you consider that just two months ago we were $37, below budget. We still have a ways to go but at least it is now heading in the right direction. Management deserves a pat on the back for their efforts these last two months. Be sure to acknowledge them and say thanks. Each of our departments is at or over budget as far as income is concerned, except for Administration. We are still down approximately $15,000.00, the amount we had budgeted for that garage sale that did not happen. On the expense side Administration and Course Maintenance are the only departments below their budgeted figures. The Café and the Clubhouse continue to struggle and between these two we have a net loss of almost $23, for the year. That is almost equal to our total shortage. Once again management has made significant progress this month. We have just four months left in our fiscal year. Our goal is to be within budget by then. Bill Engle - Treasurer, Sunland Golf and Country Club Page 8-

SUNLAND WOMEN S GOLF ASSOCIATION I hope everyone had a joyous holiday season and New Year's Eve. Can't believe it's already The years do fly when you're having fun! It won't seem long before we're out there on the golf course again in sunny, warm weather. We should all visit the driving range in the meantime, so we'll be ready for the nice weather. Don't forget that we can still play the 10:00am shotgun through the winter. SWGA will have a kick-off breakfast early in March, and the booklets will be ready by the end of March. We are still working on our yearly calendar. It looks like we'll have a busy and fun summer. The GHIN dues will be on your club statement probably in February. We don't have an exact amount for these dues as yet, but they will be around $31. Our SWGA dues stay the same at $25, and will be due in January. Christie Wilson will be billing for the dues. Checks should be made out to SWGA and given to Christie, or put in the SWGA box in the Business Office. Please pay these as soon as possible upon receipt so that your name will be included in the booklet. USGA has a new rule starting Jan regarding movement of the ball on the putting green. The rule is posted in the men's and women's locker rooms. SWGA is doing the 6th hole for the Fun Night on January 28. Hope to see you there.
