1 SUNLAND GOLF NEWS Sunland Golf & Country Club FEBRUARY 2017 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE We have only two months left to the end of our fiscal year, and your club is in pretty good shape. Last month we did have to tap into our reserve account to cover an operational cash flow shortfall but that's why we have the reserve account. The capital fund is in good shape and you will soon see it at work. In several weeks we will start to completely remodel the pro-shop, and there are plans to make changes to the lounge and to the entry hall. The membership continues to grow, granted at slow pace but it's growing. Don't forget our members are our sales force! Hopefully the below freezing days are behind us, and we can start playing golf again on a regular basis. I played a few holes several weeks ago with Fred Nast who has been a member for twenty-seven years. He couldn't recall a winter where we had so many weather closures. Our golf course superintendent, Mike Snyder is guardedly optimistic that weather didn't cause any major damage to the greens. Enjoy your club. Fritz Field, President GENERAL MANAGER S REPORT As you are well aware, we've had some unusually cold weather these past 2 months. Because of the cold weather, we were forced to close the course for 40 of the 45 day cold weather stretch. The last two weeks of January show temperatures just below 50, which should leave great golfing weather ahead. Some exciting projects have taken place. The Golf Shop remodeling has begun and should be completed early February. During the remodel we will move the golf shop operations to the Member s Lounge. There is also a Members Lounge update in development which includes and outdoor patio and larger bar area. I will update you more on these projects as they develop. 5 MENS CLUB The bad news is our winter weather has not been conducive to golfing. It seems like the course has been closed more days this year than the cumulative number of days since I became a member. The good news is that this has freed up time for your Executive Board to get a good jump on the planning for the upcoming golf season. Our budget for the year has been developed and approved. Half of our members dues will go directly back into prizes. For starters, we have doubled, from two to four, the number of par 3s that will be part of our closest to the hole (KPs) competitions during our monthly mixers. We have also decided to bring back the President s Cup this year. To ensure we get a good turnout to our only match play tournament of the year, we will waive the entry fee. What s not to like about a tournament you can play for free. Stay tuned as we make future decisions about what other events your dues will be supporting. As a final note, I want to thank Mike Schmidt for being willing to serve on the Men s Club Executive Board as the Assistant Captain. Mike just got his feet wet by attending his first meeting in January when he found out I would be traveling for a month and he would be in charge. I m sure he will do a super job and receive needed support from our outstanding Board. Jay Tomin, Men s Club Captain TURF TOPICS Emerging from hibernation, it appears that we have survived the great freeze out of The extended cold spell had the course closed longer than anyone can remember. Most people I ve talked to can t remember it being this cold for that long in Sequim. While the snow melted quickly from most of the course, it remained on the greens because of an ice layer that had formed over the closely mowed grass. With frozen ground and ice covered greens, I had some concerns about possible damage to the turf. When ice forms on putting greens, it can cause problems in two ways: crown hydration and gaseous toxicity. Crown hydration is kind of like frost bite. Water inside the cells at the heart of the grass plant (called the crown), freezes and expands causing the cell to rupture. Gaseous toxicity occurs when a sheet of ice seals off the soil surface. If the soil can t breathe, anaerobic bacteria produce toxic gasses that can build up to dangerous levels. Both these potential problems occur when the ice is clear. Clear ice has no air bubbles and no porosity. The air space in cloudy ice allows for air to move in and out of the soil, even in freezing temperatures, and has an insulating affect around plant tissues. If clear ice remains on putting greens for more than 30 days, turf damage can be expected. Fortunately for us, our ice layer was cloudy. Once we had removed the snow covering from the greens, it melted quickly. Once the greens had cleared, I was relieved to see little or no damage from the ice. There were just a few skid marks left by the deer losing their footing. Let s hope for an early spring and a mild winter next year. Michael Snyder, Golf Course Superintendent. Page 5 -

6 MEMBERSHIP It is nice to see our members taking advantage of the various social activities this winter. We have also seen continued growth in our membership. This is an excellent opportunity to meet them and welcome them to the Club. Hopefully you can join us on March 24th for this special Happy Hour. Watch for more information to be provided prior to the event. Roger Lucas Membership Chair HOUSE COMMITTEE The New Year s Eve party was a fun affair. Thanks to Tyler for running this event each year. We had a nice dinner and danced to the music of the Barry Burnett band. This was the first event where we used our new silverware. Thanks to Cheryl Coulter for her research in finding the pattern, and thank you to the SWGA for their cash donation. We now have enough silverware that matches, which enables us to set a beautiful table for all dinner functions in the ballroom. Nan Godfrey, who has run Movie Night for years, has decided to step down and turn this event over to Chet Reynolds. He will start with his first Movie Night in February. Nan will continue running the Chix Fliks and the Birthday/Anniversary Bashes. Thanks Nan for doing a great job. The Social Committee is working on new ideas for events this year. If anyone has a suggestion, or would like to be part of this committee please contact me at davemj@wavecable.com. As of now, the committee is working on a Mardi-Gras party scheduled for February 25 th, and a Murder Mystery dinner in March. We also have a Travel Talk, to be presented by Jay and Rosie Tomlin, planned for April 21 st. 8 TREASURER S REPORT I have had the opportunity to review the financials for the month of December. The good news is it was not as bad as it could have been. The bad news is it was not as good as it could have been. It just kind of was. We had total income of $95, and total expenses of $73, That leaves us a net profit from operations of $21, Our budgeted income for the month was $23,216.00, or a shortfall of only $1, Each of our five departments is below budget from a net income point of view for the year to date, except the Bar is over $ That being said I am drawn to two that seem to be correcting themselves monthly. The Course was under budgeted expenses for the month by $4, That was mostly a result of reduced labor. Three months ago, in September, they were $5, over budgeted expenses for the year. Now they are $6, under budget. That is an $11, turnaround. The other department that is progressing is the Café. Year to date they have a net loss of only $1, Both Tyler and Mandy have been pitching in to fill the void without a food and beverage manager. Saving that salary, along with the efforts of these two employees has had a positive effect for the Café. The whole operation is $28, under our year to date budgeted income. We had a budgeted net loss for the year of $11, That is a $39, hole to be filled in out three slowest months of the year in order to break even. Tough assignment, but it must be addressed. Bill Engle - Treasurer, Sunland Golf and Country Club GOLF COMMITTEE New Local Rule: Recently the USGA modified several rules pertaining to accidental movement of a player s ball that lies on the putting green. The new rule has been added to the list of Sunland G&CC Local Rules, posted in the golf shop and in the Local Rules notebook also located in the golf shop. Below is the new local rule which is provided for your information: Rules 18-2, 18-3, and 20-1 are modified as follows: When a player s ball lies on the putting green, there is no penalty if the ball or ball-marker is accidently moved by the player, his partner, his opponent, or any of their caddies or equipment. The moved ball or ball-marker must be replaced as provided in Rules 18-2, 18-3, and This Local Rule applies only when the player s ball or ball-marker lies on the putting green and any movement is accidental. Note: If it is determined that a player s ball on the putting green was moved as a result of wind, water or some other natural cause such as the effects of gravity, the ball must be played as it lies from its new location. A ball-marker moved in such circumstances is replaced. Hopefully, as the weather warms and the course is open on a regular basis. There will be more information to share next month. Stay tuned! 9 SUNLAND WOMEN S GOLF ASSOCIATION Ah, February, the doldrums of winter. But we are past the shortest day of the year so spring can't be far away. We will soon have the SWGA calendar for play for March through October of Our calendar will also include our Monday 9 hole play. As usual, the Christmas tree decorating contest was so imaginative and beautiful. We have a lot of talent here in Sunland. Thanks to all who participated and worked so hard to make it a success. The tree that honored our veterans was inspired. It was fun to see those heroes when they were so young and in their uniforms. They all looked like teenagers! We are all grateful for their service. The notice for SWGA dues has been ed or paper bills sent. The dues are $25. The same as in prior years. Please pay as soon as possible so that we can have a full and accurate count of members for our booklet. Happy Valentine's Day to all.
