5 We held our Annual Meeting on the 15 th, and we had a full house, most of whom stayed for the buffet. For those not able to make that, here s a summary of what transpired: I first introduced and thanked our current Board, then thanked the staff, our 40 committee members, and our various volunteers, all of whom have dedicated themselves to improving things at the club. Then, the membership - by proxy and by those present - voted to accept the slate of Officers and new Board members proposed by our nominating committee. See elsewhere in this Newsletter for composition of next year s Board. Next, Steve McClaskey, our Treasurer and just elected President for 2018, presented our current financial status; at last year s meeting we had proposed an aggressive budget whereby we would try for the first time in a long time to come in at year-end with a zero-operating loss. We re probably not going to quite make that, but be off by 2%, which will be covered by leftover funds in our Capital Account. But it s still a significant improvement over the 4-6% losses we ve experienced in previous years, and we will still look for ways to close the gap before year-end. Even if we finish at -2%, we will still be carrying over $30,000 into the 2018 Capital Account. Steve then presented our 2018 budget, which similarly is designed as breakeven, while meeting the following goals: no member assessment and no dues increases (except for Introductory Memberships entering their 2 nd or 3 rd years). I then reviewed briefly some of our accomplishments this year, also describing challenges we faced while operating without a General Manager, and while experiencing many retirements and other staff changes. And how these challenges called upon many staff, committee members, volunteers, the Board, and the Executive Committee of the Board to step up and cover operational needs. And again how, in late summer, it became evident that we shouldn t try and continue to manage the club as we had been doing. Long story short, Steve and I presented the management team that we ultimately have installed effective November 6 th and the basis on which we will operate going forward. To summarize: we now have a four-person, management team of full-time employees to whom the rest of the staff report, with the management team reporting to the Board through its Executive Committee. The management team is comprised of the following (in alphabetical order): * Cecilio Balmoria, our new Executive Chef who joined us in September, and whose production I hope by now you have sampled. He comes to us after 12 years with Legal Sea Foods, and another 13 years running both front-of-house (FOH) and back-of-house (BOH) operations at both fine dining restaurants and 2 micro-breweries. *Tricia Hare, our CFO/Business & Human Resources Manager who has been with us since April, and comes to us following 5 years as Office Manager with Mosher Physical Therapy, and six years managing a retail store of 40 employees, plus other endeavors. Her college degree is in restaurant management! *Andrew Howard, Grounds Superintendent, who our golfing community knows well and appreciates, has been with us since 2013, and prior to which was superintendent or assistant superintendent at several golf courses further south, following obtaining an all-important degree in agronomy and golf course management. *Alisa James, our most recent addition who, as Operations Manager, will have oversight for all of our services that interface directly with our members (customers). The Dining Services Manager (Theresa), the ProShop Manager (James), and the Bar Manager (Vickie) will report to her. Alisa comes to us trained in the culinary arts, and with more than 16 years of experience managing both FOH and BOH restaurant operations, as well as 5 years experience working in restaurant kitchens and 3 years experience in retail sales. As part of the kick-off for the changes made, in early November several Board members held a meeting attended by (almost) all staff members, to announce the revised structure and to discuss and exchange ideas for best practices that will facilitate everyone working effectively together to achieve both financial and customer-service goals in 2018 and beyond. I am excited. As I complete my third year as your President, I thank you for your confidence in trusting me to lead improvement efforts. I m optimistic about our future and am confident that we are going into 2018 with a strong team of managers, department heads, staff, and Board and committee members, all of whom will be dedicated to making your club experiences superior. Meanwhile, will YOU, please: Use the club more, and/or look for ways to engage with more of the activities that are offered Make suggestions Join a committee, or volunteer for a work group! The very best of the holiday season to you, and thank you for listening! Eric Dodge

6 Makes a great Christmas Gift! Play Unlimited Golf from December 1st 2017 through March 15th 2018 for just $299 The winter golf membership allows an individual 31/2 months of unlimited golf! Golf cart use is at the prevailing rate. Driving range use will be made available at either the daily rate or a pro-rated fee of $33 for the period. Additionally, this membership category allows winter golf members and their family to use club facilities; tennis, dining, and social events without any limit. Well we have had a few rain days in November and it put a damper on a few events. We sent an invitation out to the old MISGA clubs and offered them the opportunity to come down and play like the old days. The response was overwhelming, This is a good sign. We had the Veteran s Day nine hole tournament, It was cold but the Army team came out victorious. Congrats to Dan Meisenhelder, Vince Bocchichio, and Esther Corpus. I realize that you can not play 9 holes once a year and think that you will play well. Sorry team Coast Guard. I owe Tom Watkin s and Gerald Davis a sincere apology. Next month is a lot of end of year parties. You have Nick Klein s golf dinner, LGA breakfast, and the start of Christmas Parties at the club. We look forward to the St. Nick s Tournament on the 9 th of December and a mild winter so we can all play through the year. Remember Social and Introductory/Bronze Members that the rate for 18 holes with a cart is after December 1 st. We look forward to a great Holiday season and a Happy New Year. Remember if it was easy to hit out of it would not be called rough. Thanks for your support, James, Alan, Todd, Sinjin, Mike, and Sarah Pro Shop Staff Eastern Shore Yacht an Country Club Country Club Road Melfa, Va

7 Tennis News 1. Open Social Tennis has ended for the season, but the courts are in great shape so continue to enjoy the game. 2. The Annual Tennis Dinner was another success, with much laughter and great stories. 3. The Tennis Committee is working on getting more tennis gear in the Pro Shop; more to come on that issue. 4. Any member seeking tennis players is requested to let the Office know so that the Tennis Committee is informed. The Tennis Committee Hi from the LGA. Hi again from the LGA. I decided that this LGA Corner would be a reflection of First, however, to some unfinished business. We finally have the Eighteen-Hole LGA club championship finished. The first flight winner was determined when Lisa Harlow and Ginger Meisenhelder played their match, and Lisa was victorious. Congratulations, Lisa. Unfortunately, we were not able to finish the Nine- Hole matches so no finalist was named this year. We ve already decided to make some changes in regards to the time of the club championship next year, so we are hopeful we will not have this problem in the future. We started our 2017 season in March with our opening meeting. Being the vice-president, Melanie was given the task of coming up with the types of games we would play on our second Tuesday tournaments. She did an excellent job coming up with some unusual, but fun, tournaments. Have you ever played Devil Ball, Bramble, or Bingo, Bango, Bongo? Well, neither had we until Melanie introduced us to these games this season. I think everyone enjoyed the unusual formats. I can t wait to see what she introduces to us in The WPGA traveling team matches began in May. Unfortunately, we were not as successful in 2017 as we were in 2016 when we went to the finals. As those of you who either play or watch sports know, when some of your key players are out of commission for the season, things can be a little shaky. That s our excuse for this year when three of our regular eight team members were sidelined with either surgery or other health issues. Here s hoping for a healthy team in Even without our regulars, we each did the best we could but fell short. Of well, we can t win all the time. It s nice to give other teams a chance sometime, I guess. Throughout the year, we had some special tournaments. June brought our Member/Guest. Many thanks again to Terris and Margie for making this a success. I believe I am correct is saying this was the first tournament that either had run. It, like all special tournaments, takes lots of work and brings on a level of stress since the hosts for the day want everything to go well. With August came our Invitational/Charity Tournament. Once again this was very successful. Many thanks to Barbara and Lynne for the Invitational and Peaches for the Charity portion. Our last special tournament was the Member/Member in October. Sue and Lisa were in charge of this tournament. Like all the other people in charge, they did a great job. I m already looking forward to next year to see what our hosts plan. I would be remiss if I didn t also give special thanks to Susan for keeping track of the ringer board and also for filling in for Sue as Team Captain while Sue was recovering from surgery. Thanks Susan for being willing to cover both jobs. I m sure that there are other people that I should thank for making this year a success. So please know that I thank each and every one of you for all you do for the LGA. Probably the thing that I am most proud of that took place in 2017 is the reinstatement of the Nine-Hole group. We had a group of ladies who only wanted to play nine holes so the decision was made to restart the nine-hole group. Nine ladies joined the LGA after this decision was made. It has been a pleasure to see them out on the course playing golf. It has also been good for the others of us in terms of meeting new people and making new friends. In closing, I want to wish each and every one of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy Also remember, even though the calendar says it s December, or January, or February we can still play golf when the weather permits. Just give someone a call if you are interested. Peggy Tilghman
