A message from Mike, your Indiana South District Governor Hello Fellow Optimists, It is my honor and pleasure to serve as your Governor of the Indiana South District during the calendar year. And what a year it will be, as we will be celebrating the 100 th anniversary of Optimist International. It is a time for us to reflect on our past roots, how we began, how we expanded and grew throughout the world, how we as Optimists have served many needy kids, how we have come together to form lifetime friendships, and recall those Optimists that have gone before us. It is good to learn and remember our past, but we must always press on to the greater achievements of the future. The Centennial Theme this year is, Bringing Out the Best into the Next Century. We have a proud history, a legacy that has been left to us to continue for the betterment of the world. It is our time to lead, to grow our local clubs and District so we may continue our work as Optimists into the next century. The world yearns for The Southern Exposure 1
2 Optimism and we as Optimists need to give the kids and our communities, hope. I would like to quote our International President Rebecca Butler Mona. My theme for the year is Promise Yourself - and I hope that resonates with each of us not only with our Optimist Creed, but with the commitment we each make to bring our own personal best to everything we do - to make things better for our clubs, our communities and the young people we serve. May we try to live the Optimist Creed every day to the best of our abilities. My District Theme is, Make a Difference Today. Every day is a blessing and is filled with unique and special experiences. We meet several individuals each day, try to Make a Difference Today in someone s life with a kind gesture, a word of encouragement, or even a smile. Spread Optimism. Now let s put the three themes together. Promise yourself to bring out the best into the next century and make a difference today. Let Optimism shine. Awesome! I would like to invite everyone to our first quarter conference at the Hampton Inn in Greensburg. We are looking forward to having with us once again, Russ Thomas from Optimist International. He will be presenting the Optimist 100 program. Some of the sessions of the day will include topics on 100 Years! Let s Celebrate, 100 Ways to Appreciate Our Members, Bridging the Generation Gap, Back to Basics-Budgeting Club, and much more. Come dressed in your favorite sports team for the day. It doesn t matter what sport or at what level; high school, college, or pro. It should be a colorful and exciting day. I m looking forward to seeing you on Saturday, November 3 rd, at the Hampton Inn in Greensburg. Mike Novak, Governor The Southern Exposure 2

All four Indiana South participants that competed in the oldest age groups made the cut (top 50) to compete in the final round. In the Girls tournament, our District winner Kayla Benge, from Plainfield, finished 16 th. There were 138 players in the field. Kayla is now playing on the women s golf team at Xavier University. In the Boys tournament, our District winner Alex Heck, from Greenwood finished 22 nd, Jacob Deakyne of Noblesville finished 42 nd, and Jackson Franchville of Coatesville finished 47 th. Jackson was also a member of the All-Scholastic Team and is now a freshman at Purdue University. The boys tournament, also had 138 participants. Alex Heck will also be competing at the Optimist Tournament of Champions in Orlando the first weekend in November. The District could have sent more participants to the Championships.
