2 From Our Board President I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas with their friends and family. It is hard to believe that Christmas has come and gone, and 2019 is upon us. It seems like we just began. It is always fun to look back and reflect on the year of our club s 60 th anniversary when the board voted in early 2018 to take on the clubhouse renovation project. Our house chair, Mark Dula, spearheaded the project with a $200,000 budget. With the last dining room chairs delivered the week before Christmas, the project was completed, and we came in well below budget. What a difference all the renovations have made on the appearance to the club. Thanks again to Mark and all the other members that helped directly with many of the renovation projects. Our clubhouse is now ready for the next 60 years and beyond. When Bob Roney talked me into being president-elect, I had some reservations, but agreed to serve. While your board didn t always agree on every item that came before us, I feel that, in the end, we made the best decisions for our club and its members. I am proud of what we were able to accomplish with the limited budget that we had. I want to thank the entire board for supporting me during the last year, making my job much easier than it might have been. In addition to the support of the board members, it was the entire membership that came out and kept the club busy all year long. It was great seeing all the activity at the club on a regular basis. Congratulations to our five new board members: Jimmy Armentrout, Scotty Hill, Tony Hill, Gary Thrift, and Mike Southern. It is a huge commitment to serve on the board. I, as well as all the members, appreciate your service. I would also like to recognize the board members that have completed their three-year terms: Collins Fulcher, Bob Roney, Doug Collamer, and Herb Young, Sr. Thanks for your time and dedication. While my three-year term is also up, I will serve as past president, and also chair the long-range planning committee, supporting the new board in any way I can. I would like to personally invite each of you to attend our annual meeting on Monday, January 14, 2019, at 7:00 P.M. We will be reviewing the financial position of the club as well as formally electing officers for I would like to see a full house in support of the newly elected board. Thanks again for a great 2018, and I look forward to great things at Colonial Country Club in 2019 and beyond. See you at the club!

3 From Our General Manager It is a New Year. That means the beginning of new and big things. The annual membership meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 14 th at 7:00pm. We will announce the new board members coming on and recognize the outgoing board members. The Board of Directors this past year has done a great job accomplishing some of the goals that were set to improve the Club House. We have had nothing but positive feedback from members and guests on how the Club House looks. We should be proud of the work that was done and in the future we will make necessary improvements as needed. Once the new committee members are set, one of our main goals for the new year is increasing membership. As we all know, membership is the key to the long-term success of the Club. Even though we are in the colder months, there is still plenty of activity at the Club. We will have several dining events for all to enjoy. Blue Plate specials continue to be a popular night. Chef Eric has been coming up with some great menus. There will be lots to do, so check the newsletter for all the details. Ben Miller and Kim Dillard will keep us informed of the playing conditions for both golf and tennis. As we know with North Carolina weather, we can always have a warm spell this time of year. 6 CCC Book Club Meeting Thursday, January 10th 10:30am Please join us for book club on Thursday, January 10th at 10:30am. New members are welcome to join at any time. Plan to stay for lunch after the meeting! Friends and former college bandmates Elizabeth and Andrew and Zoe have watched one another marry, buy real estate, and start businesses and families, all while trying to hold on to the identities of their youth. But nothing ages them like having to suddenly pass the torch (of sexuality, independence, and the ineffable alchemy of cool) to their own offspring. Back in the band's heyday, Elizabeth put on a snarl over her Midwestern smile, Andrew let his unwashed hair grow past his chin, and Zoe was the lesbian all the straight women wanted to sleep with. Now nearing fifty, they all live within shouting distance in the same neighborhood deep in gentrified Brooklyn, and the trappings of the adult world seem to have arrived with ease. But the summer that their children reach maturity (and start sleeping together), the fabric of the adults' lives suddenly begins to unravel, and the secrets and revelations that are finally let loose about themselves, and about the famous fourth band member who soared and fell without them can never be reclaimed. Straub packs wisdom and insight and humor together in a satisfying book about neighbors and nosiness, ambition and pleasure, the excitement of youth, the shock of middle age, and the fact that our passions be they food, or friendship, or music never go away, they just evolve and grow along with us. 17 As I mentioned last month, 2018 has been a year to forget for a lot of turf managers. Mother nature has not been kind, and I suppose she wanted to get one last laugh in to end the year with a record snowfall event. The golf course received about 10 of snow in total and forced us to close down for over a week. Due to all of the rain events prior to the snowfall, and then 10 of snow, the golf course has been very wet for most of the month. We have also seen significant rainfall after the snow which has led to saturated soils throughout the course. Carts have been asked to stay on paths on select holes pretty much the entire month and that will more than likely continue throughout the winter as it does not appear mother nature is going to give us a break from the wet weather. It is important to follow these cart path rules to ensure we don t leave tire tracks and mud in areas that will not be able to heal themselves until Spring. Driving over these saturated areas can also lead to turf injury and damage that won t recover on its own. We have also seen our share of frosty mornings this month and that will probably be a trend that continues throughout the winter. It is important to note that any traffic on frosted turf can cause significant damage that will lead to turf loss. Please check with the golf shop before coming out if you have an early morning tee time and the temperature is close to freezing. The following picture shows why even one foursome can cause significant damage to frosted greens: Foot traffic from one foursome of golfers on a green The following articles offer a good overview of why we must be careful when dealing with frosted turf: I hope everyone has been able to enjoy the holidays with friends and families, and I look forward to seeing you all on the course in 2019! Addison Scott, GCS
