The 81st National Championship is just around the corner! Seneca Hickory Stick is eager to welcome you to the 2016 NALG National Championship, June The entry form and additional details are included in this newsletter. The course was designed by world renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones II. Mr. Jones has designed over 270 courses in 40 countries. Named to reflect the presence of rare and protected Shellbark Hickory trees on site, Seneca Hickory Stick features a picturesque layout highlighted by tranquil lakes and ponds, native plants and grasses that are surrounded by large mature trees. The Robert Trent Jones II design weaves its way through some of the finest topography for golf in the entire region. In addition to golf, you can enjoy the world renowned Niagara Falls, which are only about five minutes from the host hotel. Niagara Falls is actually the collective name for three waterfalls: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. All together, they form the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world. The volume of water approaching the falls during peak flow season may sometimes be as much as 225,000 cubic feet (6,400 m3) per second (per Wikipedia). What a sight! 2 2016 NALG National Championship Details Host Hotel: Quality Hotel and Suites, 240 First Street, Niagara Falls, New York Website: Telephone: (877) Hotel rates are $88.00 plus tax per night for Sunday June 12th - Thursday June 16th. For example, it is only a 5 minute walk to the falls and also 5 minutes to Seneca Niagara Casino. The tournament course is an easy 15 minute drive from the Hotel. A trolley runs in the Niagara Falls State Park. The Canadian border is a five minute walk from the hotel and there is a lot to do on the Canadian side. A passport is needed to cross into Canada. A wedding chapel is located in the hotel for anyone wanting to renew their vows. Your partner can be a lefty or righty. Ladies are encouraged to play, as are husband and wife teams. Lefties are especially encouraged to bring another lefty. Lefties can play in the Lefty Tournament without a partner. All lefties will be included in the Lefty Championship and will have to play their ball out on every hole. Lefty players must play all shots, including putts, left-handed (trouble shots excluded). We will attempt to pair single lefties together in the Partner Tournament. All righties will be included in the Righty Championship and will have to play their ball out on every hole. Righty players must play all shots, including putts, righthanded (trouble shots excluded). Prizes will be awarded in each tournament. Individual lefties, righties, and teams will be flighted after Saturday's round. We will also be running a Skins game on Saturday and Sunday. 10 23rd Annual Dave McCall Southwest Shootout INVITATIONAL Lefty-Partner Format Albuquerque, NM / May 11-13, 2016 Information Sheet If you don t have a partner and want us to get you one, just give Donald Lightburn a call ( ) or e- mail (dlightb@q.com). PAY OFF WILL BE 25 % OF THE FIELD with a special prize for FIRST LOW GROSS/LOW NET TEAMS. The format is Scramble, Modified Scotch and Best Ball. All players must have USGA GHIN Handicap Index or equivalent. Awards and prizes will be given at end of play of third day. All three days of play will take place at the UNM Championship Golf Course. There is a maximum score of DOUBLE PAR taken per team per hole. If team score reaches an equivalent of double par in strokes before holing out you are done for that hole. Handicap adjustments will be based on tee selection (see last sheet). Maximum team handicap for Scramble and Modified Scotch play will be 26 strokes. 13 Obituary William Vernon Gibson Jr., DDS William Vernon Gibson Jr., DDS, age 82, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., husband of Mary Virginia Smith Gibson, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 6, Bill was born on Aug. 5, 1933, in Cleveland, Tenn., the son of the late William Vernon Gibson and Hazel Duff Gibson. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University. During his Naval career he served on the USS Wasp and USS Forrestal. He retired as the Chief Dental Officer at Charleston Navy Base, Charleston, S.C. Bill s passion was golf and he accumulated nine official holes-in-one. He was a member of the Snee Farm Golf and Country Club and enjoyed many days with friends on the local courses. See more at: Obituary Thomas W. Stevenson Thomas W. Stevenson, 74, of Leland, NC went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016 after a short battle with cancer. Tom was born in Syracuse, NY on November 12, 1941, son of the late Donald Stevenson and Lillian Hart Stevenson. After retiring after 30 years with UPS, Tom moved to Leland 17 years ago to enjoy the warmer weather and his love of golf. 14 Jim Pfrogner of Sarasota, FL scored his 11th hole-in-one during a practice round at Heron Creek CC on December 17th. It was on the 15th hole, 155 yards into wind and a setting sun with his 5-hybrid. He reports I never saw the ball after I hit it due to the sunlight nor did my playing partners. After looking all over for their shots I went up to the green to look for mine and after some time looked in the hole. Surprise, surprise. We want to know about your hole-in-one!
