1 Around THE Club Don t forget, we are on Facebook check us out at St. Andrews Arc Leesburg, FL Ann Carter - Editor July, 2015 NEWS FROM Craig Misch, Golf Pro Field trip to Royal St Cloud was a huge success. Closest to the pin winners were Kathy Sjogren and Bob Keating. The course was great and the food after was too, but nothing was better than the fellowship of us all being together. We had a wonderful time I will be doing another next month after my vacation so stay tuned for details. There are several things going on with the golf course that I would like to tell you all about so you know what we are doing. The 16th green is now re opened and should remain so from now on. I believe after the next aerification (June22) this will become one of the best greens on the course. We have also re sodded several areas on different greens which I assure you will grow in properly after aerification. We also rented a machine to cut some of the tree roots we felt were affecting the greens. There are several areas on both the front and back nines where this was done. If you notice a long strip of dirt about 3-4 inches wide just off the collar of the green that s where the treatment was done. The reason for this treatment is to cut the tree roots that are going under the green. The roots will no longer take all the water because they will die off leaving the green to prosper in areas they have not. We are throwing everything at the greens to make them respond. We had Aquatic Systems out to the course to address a few issues with our ponds. They sprayed the pond on hole 3 which should take care of the algae problem that was causing the fountain to clog up. They will continue to treat the pond so the problem will not come back. They are also working on hole number 4 to give us permanent line of sight relief so we can always see the green on hole 4 no matter what tee box your playing from. It will take a bit of time but you will begin to see a clearing in the next few weeks. It takes time for the foliage to turn back, but we will have hole 4 back in full view very soon. 1

2 NEWS FROM Mike Kowalski, Golf Chair Couples outings: Several times this year Couples have been allowed to pick their own four person teams and this has worked out very well. However, the Golf Committee recommends that couples do not play with the same couple more than once a year. Taking a DROP: When a golfer takes relief or is granted relief for whatever reason, a drop ball must be dropped from shoulder height. Taking a drop means that the ball should never be moved with the club or placed on the ground---this is illegal---a drop is a drop. Handicap flags are meant to be used by those with a medical condition the same as a handicap sticker for the car. So if you have the need for a handicap flag when you play golf you are required to display the flag on your cart. Having the flag in your cart is not good enough---display it! Pace of Play: What is pace of play? It is keeping up with the group in front of you throughout the round of golf. You should always look for ways to speed up your play like: enter the scores at the tee box at the next hole; play ready golf whenever possible; limit you practice swings no more than one per shot on the golf course---use the driving range to practice; walk to your ball while your partner is addressing his/her shot. There is little that we, as members, can do about the condition of the putting green and sand trap, but we can contribute to the maintenance of the driving range. Terry and his crew do an excellent job of moving the placement markers on the driving range in order to minimize the damage done by divots. They also tend to the job of reseeding the used areas. Here is how we can help. If you have ever watched the pros hit practice balls, you will note that while they hit scores of balls, the grass area that they damage is quite small. After they make their first divot, they place each subsequent ball at the back edge of that divot. This significantly reduces the amount of damaged sod per practice shot. In the diagram below, note the difference in the damaged area of grass. Your area of divots may not be as perfect as the one in the diagram, but we can all make an effort to keep that damaged area compact and as small as possible. 2

3 NEWS FROM Betty Gibson, MWGA Representative June has been HOT to say the least. We ve had some HOT contests as well. Flight winners in individual Odd Holes were Helene Olchowik, /Sandy Cookson and Suong Berndts with Nancy Beighley winning the Woodie side game. First place team in Sises was Betty Danish, Nancy Oberts, Michelle Penski and Sue Scappaticci with Gay Whitlock winning closest to the line. Flight winners in the FONE game were Betty Hudi, Carolyn Skorich and Nancy Oberts with Linda Carey winning longest putt. The highlight of the month was the Hawaiian Scramble where so many people came out in a variety of tropical fashion. The winning team was Edith Boom, Christa Bowen, Karen Teeguarden and Brenda Watson. Therese Buono won the closest to the parrot. We had a wonderful luncheon afterward and Brenda Watson was deemed to have had the best outfit. July s games will be: **7/2 Team Red White and Blue (1 best ball red flags, 2 BB white flags and 3 BB blue flags and closest to the American Flag on #4. Dear Monarch Members, It is that time of year when the students are looking at one more month of summer break and then back to the grind. My daughter Kim and I come to you looking for help with school supplies for the needy children of Minneola Elementary. Every year the need grows as the students approach the most important thing they will ever do in their lives, getting a good education. Minneola Elementary is a school of about 1100 students. 53% of them are on free or reduced lunches. Many students will come to school that first week with no supplies at all and many students with just the bare minimum. Teachers will supply, out of their own pockets, as much as possible, so anything we come up with will be of great assistance to them and the kids. This is our 9 th year in helping the students, and the teachers really look forward to our donations. Bill lives on Scotland Court and he and his wife Connie have one daughter and two grandchildren. Please welcome Larry Demaline as a General Limited Member effective July 1 st. Bill is still employed as an Account Executive enjoys golf and travel. Connie s hobbies are sewing, quilting and making curtains. Larry, also known as The Golf Cart Guy is married to Barbara and has 3 children. He worked in the IT Dept. at the VA Medical Center in Atlanta Georgia. He has a shop in back of the cart barn where he performs maintenance and repairs on all golf carts in the community. (no photo available) His hobby is model ship restoration. Esther & Keith Patterson Also welcome Keith & Esther Patterson who have joined us as a Family General member effective July 1 st. They live on Royal St. George s Lane. They have three children and three grandchildren. They enjoy bowling, golf & fishing. 5
