It s times like these that activity really gets the summer spirit flowing. Bob Rung's team of food preparers, along with Saul's golf at Blackberry, made the July BBQ a 'better than ever' event this year. This event is always good especially when the cool weather made the typical 'California' day just right. Bob deserves special credit because his plans and frequent reviews assure that each job is covered and the coordination flows like a smooth sewing machine purr. Congratulations to the whole committee for doing the work so well. There were other things of significance this July too. I have picked two to have us all consider for a moment. Our SIRS group is composed of many who have contributed to a great America. That is a part of our age and the accomplishments attributed to the life span we cover. It was 50 years ago when the challenge to put a man on the moon came into being. Then, 40 years ago, it happened. Within our branch 125, we have men who contributed a part of their skills to make that happen. It was one of those proud moments when all the world looked to the sky and thought if not said, 'well done America!', the accomplishment is for all of us. It was thus that our generation demonstrated teamwork in its finest. Toward the last two weeks of this month, we learned that another member of our generation, Walter Cronkite, passed on. He was recognized as being the 'most trusted man in America'. In a four hour program the Discovery Channel reviewed his beginning as a newspaper reporter. It continued by showing him being thrust into giving first hand reports of war-time action in Africa and giving a step by step commentary of 'man on the moon'. What a conical view of the man and the changes that happened. I suspect that many of our SIRS reviewed from the 1940's to today could inspire a feeling of pride in our ranks prompting a 'well done' from us all. We are honored by the many good men among us. Ms. Phillips previously spent several years working for the Gilroy Fire Department as its Education Specialist.

2 Bowling With five weeks of summer bowling left, the Silver/Waggoner/ Harris team is in 1st place, the Alvaro/Madayag team is 5th, and Bill Jansen s team is in 13th place. The league bowls every Monday at 9:30 am at Cambrian Bowl and is open to all active SIR members in SIR Areas 5 & 20. Just drop in and sign up. Vic Harris, Bowling Chairman Area Golf News Several Branch 125 golfers participated in an invitational tournament at The Villages golf course on August 3rd. Each foursome consisted of two SIR members from the Villages and two players from SIR Areas 5 and 20. In Flight 1 Henry Melin s foursome placed 1st, Jon Goldsworthy s team was third, and Bill Shaddle s team was fourth. In Flight 2 Benton White (playing as a Villages resident) placed first; Daryl Jones and Bob Norbutas played in the foursome that placed third. For Flight 3 Gerry O Connell s team was 3rd, and Neal Atchisson s team was 4th. Neal also placed first in the putting contest. Results from the Area 5/20 tournament at Pacific Grove will be reported in next month s Bulletin. The next Area 5/20 tournament is on September 28th at Rancho Canada. San Jose, CA TRAVEL WITH SIR COMPLETED TRIPS FOR THE MONTH: The "Indianapolis 500 Race" was attended by 17 participants on May 22 to 25 and everyone enjoyed a great weekend at the speedway. The "Patti Page Show" in Reno was attended by 40 participants on June 30 to July 1. Every one had time to gamble and take in a great show. NEW TRAVEL BROCHURES: Three new travel brochures were issued this month. (1)"Sebastopol" is scheduled for Wednesday, October 7, This includes Lunch, a visit to Apple Valley Ranch and a stop along Florence Avenue to see the Junk Art. (2)The "Bluegrass, Buggies and Bourbon" is scheduled for May 17 to 23, 2010, a seven day tour to Ohio and Kentucky. This features the Amish Country of Ohio and the Horse Country of Louisville and Lexington. (3)"River Cruising Portugal and Spain" is scheduled for September 7 to 18, This include 3 nights in Lisbon and 7 nights cruising through the Douro Valley on the MS Amadouro cruise ship. TOUR INFORMATION: A six night golf outing is in the planning for Maui, Hawaii in the late January/early February 2010 time frame. This would include three rounds of golf on the Wailea Golf Courses with lodging at the Outrigger-Palms at Wailea. For non golfers there are many other activities included to keep you entertained. Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup, a six day trip, is in the planning for departure on September 25, This includes Mount Rushmore, Iron Mountain Road, Historic Deadwood and Badlands National Park. February, 2010 is in the planning for a trip to Davis, CA to hear the Four Aces. More details later in the final planning. The "Tutankhan and the Age of the Pharaohs" trip for July 23, 2009 was canceled.
