Secty. Gary Robertson Treasurer Paul Schwabe Asst. Treas. Frank Gire BRANCH DIRECTORS Big SIR Message Last month s speaker Steve Blank presented a well prepared, most informative talk on The Secret Story Of Silicon Valley. So many of our members spent their working days at the companies that were either spawned or grew as a result of the collaboration of academia (initially Stanford) and the government. These partnerships made this area a forerunner in defense/private industry cooperation. He shared unknown situations during WWII that necessitated the brightest scientists be brought here to work on advanced radar, microwave, telemetry, etc. This was to combat the German capabilities. Many companies got started as a result, because it took industry to bring to fruition what the think tanks dreamed up. The rest is history. For us who associate Silicon Valley with the chip industry as the growth driver, we can not forget that our area s true growth beginnings really got started much earlier in the 60s. I want to call your attention to the slate of candidates for Officers and Directors for next year s leadership of our branch listed in this bulletin. You will be asked to vote for approval at our August Luncheon. Don t forget the annual barbecue takes the place of our regular meeting in July. Hope to see you there! Big SIR Little SIR Secretary Asst. Secretary Treasurer Asst. Treasurer Directors Daryl Jones Don Rosenbaum Cliff Yamaoka Gary Robertson Paul Schwabe Frank Gire Neal Atchison Michael Cronk Dave Grant Don Johnson Paul Piligian Gene Plevyak Daryl Jones, Charlie Hanson, Jerry Oliver, 2016 Nominating Committee BOWLING REPORT We have almost reached the mid- point of the summer bowling schedule. After seven weeks out of 13 our two teams are positioned nicely to make a run at the championship. Team 6 with Tomix Alvaro and Rich Madayag are in second place one point out of first. Team 5 with Joe Spada and Frank Gire are tied for 4th place, three points out of first. There was some excellent above average scoring in June: Rich Madayag: 205, 228, 235 games and a 663 series. Joe Spada: 213, 211, 211 games and a 635 series. Frank Gire: 200, 183, 203 games and a 586 series. Tomix Alvaro: 180, 149, 172 games and a 501 series. BRANCH 125 TEAM QUALIFIES FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Three Branch 125 teams participated in the Area Qualifier for the State Team Championship at Spring Valley on June 19. Team 1 went into the 18th hole at 6 under par and needed a 3.5 foot putt to go 7 under. Being a scramble format, all four team members had a chance to make the putt. All four players missed. Team 2 came to the 18th hole at 5 under par. They needed a 30 foot putt to tie team one. Mike Patterson was up to the task and snaked the 30 foot putt in the tie Team 1. Team 2 had a slightly higher handicap so it moves on to the State championship to be held at Poppy Ridge GC on Aug. 10. Congratulations to Team 2 members: Rammer Ramirez, Bob Lopes, Mike Patterson and Frank Gire. Henry Melin, Reporter Chuck Waggoner, Bowling Reporter SIR Westgate Branch 125 July 2015 Page 5

He included historical events and the actual systems developed to counter the enemy electronics, such as: WWII The First Electronic War, The Electronic Shield- Electronic Warfare, Stanford and the Cold War, and Lockheed Comes to Town and We become Silicon Valley. Steve is a Silicon Valley serial- entrepreneur and academician who has spent more than 30 years within the high technology industry. He has founded or worked within eight startup companies, four of which have gone public.
