Paul Schwabe BRANCH DIRECTORS Big SIR Message I would like to welcome two new members to our branch: Ed Kinney, sponsored by Alan Patmore, and Gary Shrader, sponsored by Harry Coulter. Sponsors of new members receive the coveted SIR ball cap. Paul Piligian and I attended the Annual State SIR meeting in Vallejo on August 4. In addition to the election of our new state officers for 2015, a discussion was held on the need to recruit new members. Our branch has a lot to offer to retirees... many activities such as golf, bocce, bowling, monthly guest speakers during our luncheon, and other fun activities. You can help us grow our membership by inviting a friend to join us at our next luncheon. Our BEC and Directors for 2015 were elected during the August Luncheon. Congratulations to Paul Piligian who will be our new Big SIR for I am sure that he and the other elected officers will do an outstanding job. Our golf group had two qualifying teams for the Area 5 State Team Championship Scramble at Rancho Solano on August 11. They came in at 12 th and 30 th place. We also had members participate in the Villages two best ball area golf tournament where we had winning members in all four groups. Congratulations to all participating members!! I would like to encourage our new members to attend the next BEC meeting on September 16. We are looking for your participation and ideas to strengthen our different committees. Our meeting starts at 10 a.m., with coffee and donuts available at 9:30 am. Look forward to seeing all of you at our September luncheon. 4 BOWLING REPORT SEPTEMBER SPEAKER -- RETIRED U-2 PILOT MIKE BANKS The SIR summer bowling league is finished. There were 10 teams total and two teams had members from Branch 125. Team 12 with Frank Gire, Don Williams, and Chuck Waggoner finished tied for 2nd place, just one game out of first. Team 1 with Rich Madayag and Tomix Alvaro finished in 8th place. Top summer scores for Branch 125 bowlers were: High Scratch Game Rich Madayag 235 High Scratch Series Rich Madayag 600 High Handicap Game Frank Gire 256 High Handicap Series Don Williams 675 High Average Rich Madayag 180 The winter league starts on Sept. 8 at Cambrian Bowl in San Jose. We start bowling at 9:30 a.m. and are normally done by noon. We need more bowlers! If you are interested give me a call or an and we will get you signed up. Bowling fees are $15 a week plus the league fee and almost half of that goes into our prize fund so everyone gets a good payoff at the end of the year. Chuck Waggoner, Bowling Reporter AUGUST SPEAKER: LANCE WEST Mike Banks, U.S. Air Force Colonel Ret., was a pilot of the U- 2, the first operational airborne spy vehicle. Built by Lockheed (Skunk Works), this unique aircraft could reach altitudes of 70,000 feet, had speed to 500 MPH, and could travel more than 6,000 miles with its one pilot. This aircraft first flew on Aug. 1, 1955 and was accepted into service in spring The public became aware of it on May 1, 1960 when Frances Gary Powers was shot down by the Soviet Union. Mike will provide a brief history of the U- 2 aircraft and describe typical missions over Cuba and Vietnam. He will explain how he became involved with the program and how very difficult the aircraft was the fly. His presentation will include an eight- minute video and questions from the audience. Don Rosenbaum, Speakers Committee WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Lance West, right, of the State of California Consumer Protection Agency, Bureau of Automotive Repair, was presented with a commemorative SIR Branch 125 mug by Don Rosenbaum following his talk at the August Luncheon meeting. West described how the bureau can help consumers whenever there is a problem with auto repairs. Two new members were welcomed at the August Luncheon. 5 PLAYERS OF THE MONTH HONORED AT AUGUST LUNCHEON Two sets of Players of the Month were honored at the August Luncheon. All received free sleeves of balls and the widely acclaimed and coveted title of Golfer of the Month. TRAVEL NEWS The SIR Area 5 & 20 Coordinated Travel Bulletin is issued six times a year. To be on the mailing list for this Bulletin ( ed unless you request a hard copy) call Bob Shields at Detailed brochures on individual trips are available at the monthly luncheons. Six trips have been completed in 2014 and six more scheduled. In July, nine participants enjoyed the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon (with a stop at the Blue Ox Mill Works and Napa wine country) and 17 participants went on the trip to the Festival of Arts in Southern California that included a tour of Catalina Island. Lopez got his ace on the 155- yard 2 nd hole at Dublin Ranch on June 15 while Bassi aced the 160- yard 15 th at Poppy Hills on June 25. Jerry Davis joined the Ace Club with a hole- in- one on the 158- yard 4 th hold at on Aug. 13.
