Roger Danielson, our Big SIR Elect, now has the task of filling the 99 positions that help our branch run smoothly. He ll be making the rounds to see if some of the active members are willing to volunteer for one more year, but chances are he will need to recruit new volunteers for some positions. re is always room for additional helpers when it comes to organizing the Christmas luncheon or the annual BBQ, etc. What s that old proverb? Many hands make light work. If you know of someone that would be a good speaker for our branch, join the Programs group and recruit that speaker. By the way, if you use Excel you may be able to help with the building of a speaker database for our Region that is currently evolving. In the end, volunteering is sort of a selfish act; the good feeling you experience far outweighs the effort you put in. Over the last 16 years, our average membership has been at 180 and, over the last ten years, we have been as low as 170 and as high as 185. We are currently at 181, and that s good, right? Yes, it is but, our annual attrition rate runs at 20 members; fortunately, so far this year we have lost only five members but we can t count on good fortune when we are dealing with the inevitable. During the year we added three new members and with the six we inducted at the meeting we find ourselves needing 11 more for our membership level to remain constant. Please take a look at your friends and see if some can benefit by joining us and help our branch continue its history of stability. Our August meeting is one of the longer ones of the year. He is responsible for facilitating interview requests for players, coaches and front office staff. He also oversees the production of all football publications, football publicity items, team-issued media materials and press credentials. Beckler has been a member of the 49ers PR staff that has twice been named a finalist for the coveted Pro Football Writers of America Pete Rozelle Award. Several months ago, when we had a representative of the San Jose Water Co. speak to us, several questions were asked that, according to our speaker, were the responsibility of the Santa Clara Valley Water District and not her company. Our Programs Chair found that Linda Lezotte, currently Vice Chair of the Santa Clara Valley Water District, was available and booked her. It was like a perfect storm, long meeting and lots of questions forced us to end the meeting with lots of unanswered questions. If you still have questions you need to ask, ed them to: llezotte@valleywater.org. Linda told me that either she, or one of her staff, will respond to our questions. We are the first branch she has spoken to and liked the experience and even informed Gene, our Programs chair, that she is willing to return to speak about flood control. John Figini, Big SIR THANK YOU TO AUGUST SPEAKER Linda LeZotte, Vice Chairperson of the Santa Clara Valley Water District and a former San Jose City Council member, was presented with a SIR Branch 125 commemorative mug by Gene Plevyak, following her talk at the August Luncheon meeting. MATCH PLAY FINALISTS STATE TOURNAMENT At the end of July, seven members of Branch 125 ventured down to Crazyhorse to compete for a chance to go to the State Individual Championship. group consisted of Grant Beech, George Bassi, Henry Melin, Vince Endter, Ray Gilcrest, Bob Lopes and Jimmy Birlew. field was divided into seven flights with the top two going to the SIR State Tournament at Bayonet. results were: Henry Melin 1st in Flight 1; Grant Beech 1st in Flight ;6 Bob Lopes 4th in Flight 2 and received $20. It should be noted that Grant Beech beat the second place player by 8 strokes and tied for the lowest net score of the day. Finalists in the SIR Branch 125 Match Play Tournament were, left to right, Dave Brown, Charles Nieto (runner-up), Alan Wieteska (champion), and Vince Endter. DATE NIGHT UPDATE Date Night was held at Benedicts Cafe on Aug. 23. Seventeen couples came for a great time of drinks and food. Service was exceptional and food was terrific. This restaurant is an offshoot of the Three Flames. Breakfast is served all day but there are tasty dinner entrees and desserts that satisfied our wide range of tastes. Wish us luck and/or join us at Individual State Next and final dinner for the year will be at the Blue Championship and Open Play on Tue, Nov. 13 and Door Restaurant on Oct. 23. Only a few openings are Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Bayonet Course in Seaside. left. This is a small Mediterranean restaurant that has Day 1 will be open play ladies welcome. Receiving free sleeves of balls and the widely-acclaimed and highly coveted title of Golfer of the Month for July were, left to right, Ken Rose, Jim Light, Duane Oberquell, Larry Barwacz and Bob Fraka, STATE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP Team of Henry Melin, Bob Norbutas, Grant Beech and Earl Schmieding competed in the SIR State Team Championship at Rancho Solano on Aug. 13. We negotiated the tremendously large greens and shot a exceptional 9 under par. Never were we in danger of getting a Bogie and just missed several other birdies. When the final results were in, two other teams also had 9 under par with larger handicaps. So we placed 3rd out of a field of 35 teams. It was a good showing!
