1 SIR WESTGATE BRANCH 125 June 2016 A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION FOR RETIRED MEN Devoted to the Promotion of Independence and Dignity of Retirement 3 rd Tuesday of each month Three Flames Restaurant 1547 Meridian Ave., San Jose CA Executive Committee Meeting 10:30 a.m. Fellowship Hour 11 a.m. Lunch at 12 noon State President Donald Dill Reg 7 Director Patrick Misener Area 5 Governor Bob Taylor BRANCH OFFICERS Big SIR Daryl Jones Little SIR Grant Beech Secretary Cliff Yamaoka Asst. Secty. Gary Robertson Treasurer Paul Schwabe Asst. Treas. Frank Gire BRANCH DIRECTORS Big SIR Message Big SIR Message We are almost to the halfway point for Time seems to go by so fast (a phenomenon we don t like to see at our age). Our Branch continues to thrive, and our membership count is headed towards our goal to have more members at the end of the year than we had at the beginning. To keep up this positive trend we need to focus more on our new members. I get the feeling that we induct a new member, say Cock-a-doodle-do, and then forget about him. We need to do more to welcome new members and fully integrate them into our branch. We need to do more to ensure that our new members are satisfied with their decision to join. We need to do more to get feedback from our new members to learn about what they like about our branch, and what they think we could do to improve. I want to establish a New Members Committee to focus on these issues. Let me know if you d like to help. Our annual Barbeque Luncheon is coming up in July. Buy a couple of tickets for yourself and significant other. It s a lot of fun I ll see you there. 4 THANK YOU TO MAY SPEAKER WELCOME NEW MEMBER PGA Professional Bill Menkemeller, left, is presented with a commemorative SIR Branch 125 mug by Little SIR Grant Beech following his presentation at the May Luncheon meeting John Thompson, right, was welcomed into SIR Branch 125 at the May Luncheon meeting. He was sponsored for membership by Dave Butt, right. AGE LESS JUNE SPEAKER Rob Tufel, MSW, MPH, Executive Director of Cancer CAREpoint, will discuss the free support services available from this San Jose nonprofit organization to anyone in Silicon whose life is touched by cancer patients, family members and caregivers. Pat Brennan, right, was commended for Shooting Your Age a 77 at ARE YOU PAYING YOUR FAIR SHARE? A special message from Big SIR Daryl Jones Here s an interesting fact concerning the financial contributions we receive from our members at each luncheon. Our Branch asks for a $2 or $3 donation each month to cover our expenditures. However, our average is only $1.50 so there must be many members who give us just $1 or nothing at all! Our treasury balance has never come close to bankruptcy, so we don t have a dire need for more money, but just on principle, everyone should pay his fair share then our average contribution would be closer to $2.50. Thank you. Paul Piligian, left, was honored for Shooting Your Age an 84 at. Roger Danielson, right, said Piligian has scored his age or less six times while golfing with SIR Branch 125. 7 BOWLING REPORT The summer season has begun! Our one contending team with Rich Madayag and Tomix Alvaro lost the first playoff round but won the second round and took 3 rd place. However, for the year they lead the league by winning 57 games. This resulted in a nice payoff of over $200 for each team member. The summer league is being played at the Fourth Street Bowl. This facility is a big step up as the equipment is newer and well maintained. We can use a couple more teams so if you are interested come to the alleys about 10 a.m. on Mondays and sign up with our league secretary, Don Slama. Cost is $15 with about half going into the prize fund that is distributed at the end of the year. It is a 100% handicap league so all teams have an equal chance of winning. The league is made up of great bunch of SIRs from various South Bay branches so you will enjoy the bowling. SIR STATE INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP SIGN UP Signups will be at our Wednesday tournaments in June. Just pay Peter Morrone $3 and you are in. This will give you the opportunity to play in the Division Qualifier at Hills on July 25. Players are divided into 7 flights. The top 2 qualifiers in each flight get to play at the Individual State Championship" at Laguna Seca on Oct. 17 for free. The Hills Division Qualifier will be a Shotgun Start at 9 a.m. and costs $43. Questions? henrymelin@gmail.com. GOLD COUNTRY GOLF TRIP Chuck Waggoner, Bowling Reporter TRAVEL NEWS The SIR Area 5 & 20 Coordinated Travel Bulletin is issued monthly. To be on the mailing list for this Bulletin ( ed unless you request a hard copy) call Bob Shields at Detailed brochures on individual trips are available at the monthly luncheon. To date we have completed three trips with 10 more scheduled for 2016, 11 scheduled for 2017 and two scheduled for On Wednesday, June 15, there will be a tour presentation at 3 p.m. at Mama Mia's Restaurant, 200 E. Hamilton, San Jose describing the Pacific Northwest Colombia River Cruise scheduled for October 15-23, Please RSVP to Allen Daily or Don House Larry Barwacz, right, posted the lowest score at the recent Gold Country Golf trip. Jerry Davis, left, presented Larry with the tournament trophy at the May Luncheon meeting. Beach Blanket Babylon is scheduled for an evening show on Nov. 30, 2016 in San Francisco. The show is great for first timers and repeaters. The basic story is the same but you have all the mayhem and antics of today s political scene with the tallest hats ever to be put upon a stage. Prior to the show includes a hosted dinner at Fior d'italia, America's oldest Italian restaurant. 8 GOLD COUNTRY GOLF REPORT Twenty-eight of your fellow SIR members spent three beautiful days in the Sierra foothills on the semi-annual golf trip May 3-5. The weather, as well as the condition of the two golf courses, could not have been better. As always, we stayed in the WorldMark condos at Greenhorn Creek outside Angles Camp and ate dinner in the Greenhorn Creek restaurant. Both were excellent. On Tuesday, we played Saddle Creek Golf Course in a best ball format. Pat Doran s team of Jon Goldsworthy, Bill Whittemore and Daryl Jones won the team competition. Pat Doran s 78 was the best score of the day and Daryl Jones had the low net of 61. On Wednesday, we played Greenhorn Creek in a best ball format. Dave Signorotti s team of Ken Rose, Mike Patterson and Ron Handley won the team competition. Bob Norbutas had the best score of the day with an 87 as well as the low net of 66. Wednesday evening awards were given to the combined scores for the two days. Larry Barwacz was the big winner having a combined low net of 131. Bob Norbutas was second best with a combined score of 133. Our Big SIR, Daryl Jones, came in third with a 134. All participants were recognized for their scores. On Thursday, we played Greenhorn Creek in a scramble format. Peter Morone s team of Bob Norbutas, George Bassi and Marty DeVries won with a team score of 65, seven under par. Again this year, Bob Norbutas developed scramble teams that were balanced for handicaps. This year, the organization of the trip was a team effort. Eight people helped to make the trip a success: Pat Doran, Jerry Davis, Neal Atchison, Larry Peck, Henry Melin, Daryl Jones, Bob Norbutas and Tom Ranweiler. As with all SIR events every participant jumped in to help when needed. Thanks to all for making this spring trip very successful. The fall trip will be the last week of September or the first week of October. Jerry Davis, Golf Trip Reporter SIR Westgate Branch June 2016 Page 8
