It s December already. In January I took the reigns to be your Big SIR for I had a pretty good idea of what to expect, but I must admit I was somewhat nervous. However, thanks to the many volunteers that serve as officers or committee members, the Branch runs itself, and thankfully we ended the year in much the same shape as when we started. My one disappointment is that we didn t achieve our membership goal to add one to our membership total in (We lost one instead of gaining one.) I hope I instilled in all of you the importance of continuously looking for new members. We have to grow in order to be successful. I also want to encourage each of you to volunteer to serve the Branch the satisfaction you get will enrich your SIR experience. Check out the list of committees in your roster. Come to one of our Branch Executive Committee meetings before our luncheon and get a feel for what s going on behind the scenes. I want to thank all of you that have helped me throughout the year, and I look forward to our future together. Checks need to be received no later than 4 p.m. on Dec. 15, along with a note specifying meal preference and table seating. IN MEMORIUM: BILL AVERY One of our members, Bill Avery, passed away last week. Bill was 82 years old and was married to his wife Doris for 62 years. He was a member of our SIR Branch for 10 years and volunteered for several activities. He was a member of our golf committee for 5 years where he distributed score results and prizes for our weekly tournaments. He volunteered for the Christmas committee and was Master of Ceremonies. An important position is the branch chaplain who prepares and gives the invocation at each monthly luncheon. Bill always had something new to say and also reminded us of how lucky we are to be SIRs and be Americans. He was our chaplain for three years. He also enjoyed golfing and bocce. His funeral will be held Sunday, Dec. 11 at 3:30 pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Saratoga Ave, Saratoga. His wife, Doris, has requested that no flowers be sent but if you want to make a donation she prefers a donation in Bill s name be made to the church. LOOKING FOR PROGRAM IDEAS We are looking for someone who is interested in helping find informative, interesting speakers for our monthly meeting. There is a committee to help you and a lot of information on speakers used by other SIR branches. The need is for a person with organizational skills who will lead the committee and bring your ideas to the board for approval. If you would like step up to help with this interesting job or just get more information, contact Grant Beech at Thank you for your consideration. SIR Westgate Branch DECEMBER 2016 Page 4

5 FALL GOLF TRIP On October 4-6, 28 SIR Branch 125 members spent three days in the Sierra foothills playing golf, eating, and having a great time. We played Saddle Creek in Copperopolis and Greenhorn Creek in Angles Camp. The group stayed at the WorldMark condos in Angles Camp and had its evening meals in the Greenhorn Creek restaurant. Both the meals and accommodations were at their usual high standard. On Tuesday, playing the Saddle Creek course in a two best ball format, Jon Goldsworthy and Jerry Davis shot 85 to share the best low gross scores. Gene Plevyak had the best low net with a score of 65. Bill Croxton came in second with a net score of 68. On Wednesday, playing the Greenhorn Creek course, Steve Pinn scored a 90 to win the best low gross award and Larry Barwacz scored a 69 to win the best low net prize. That evening, Larry Peck gave out the awards for best score for the two days combined. Roger Danielson won the award and $50 for having the lowest combined net score. On Thursday, the group played the Greenhorn Creek course in a scramble format. Team 6, consisting of Steve Pinn, Cliff Yamaoka, Bill Wittemore, and Gene Plevyak won the tournament with a score of 69, three under par. Team 5 consisting of Ken Rose, Dave Brown, Bill Croxton, and Kevin Kavanaugh came in second with a score of 70, two under par. The planning and organization of the semi-annual trip was a joint effort. Working to make the trip a success were Neal Atchinson, Larry Peck, Pat Doran, Daryl Jones, Bob Norbutas, and Jerry Davis. In addition, other members pitched in to help where needed. SIR members make this trip twice a year, spring and fall. The spring trip is usually the last week of April or the first week of May. The fall trip is the last week of September or the first week of October. If you are interested in making either or both of these trips plan ahead and keep those dates open.
