3 NEWSLETTER Clubhouse News JANUARY 2017 FROM THE MANAGER, PATRICK DILL T h i s is the hardest newsletter report that I have ever had to write. Right now I am three days removed for learning that a good friend and co-worker was killed in a car accident on Christmas Eve. Chip was a great employee of NBGCC for almost 10 years. During which time he became our head bartender and our Assistant Manager for the last 6 years. Everyone that ever stepped foot in the bar area of the Clubhouse was greeted with a smile and their drink ready when they sat down. I would like to send my deepest condolences to his Mother Lousie, his sister Holli, Jeff Quinn and his two nephews, Trey & Sam, along with many other friends and family. Chip was preceded in death by his father and long time member, Dan Stallings. Chip, NBGCC will not be the same without you coming into the main bar each day, ready to make someone s day better. We are all better for having known you, and I hope you knew how much your NBGCC family loved you. REMINDERS: Shirt tails shall be tucked in at all times while playing golf. When parking, please do not park at the end of parking lot rows as it makes it difficult for cars that are properly parked to back out of their spot. Smokers - please respect the appearance of Club property by disposing of cigarette and cigar butts in an ashtray. Walkers please do not use the course for any non-golf purposes, such as walking, jogging, biking and the like between the hours of 8:00 am and 6:00pm. In Memory of Stallings Daniel L. Chip November 19, December 24, 2016 Forever in our hearts we will remember Chip for his kindness and love of family and friends. You are missed deeply by your NBGCC family. Suggestions are always welcome. Please send an to suggestions@nbgcc.com. PAGE 3

6 TENNIS REPORT, BILL JONES Can you believe it is already 2017? And with it brings hope for a bright new year at NBGCC; specifically at your tennis center. We hope 2016 was as good a year for everyone as it was here in tennis. Another ladies league championship for two of our teams with state playoffs this past fall With more tennis being played by more members than ever before, we all feel we are blessed. It is all because of the hard working men and women here at your Club that makes this a wonderful place to come each and every day. We are thankful for you, our members, for supporting all the wonderful causes and programs we have here in tennis department. So we look forward to 2017, and continued growth and exciting times here at NBGCC. We hope everyone enjoys continued success for the New Year Tennis News The Kid s After School Program restarts the week of January 9 th. The first classes will be Tuesday, January 10 th and Thursday, January 12 th, weather permitting. Please give us a call or so we can sign you up. Thank you we are looking forward to seeing all of our Junior Program kids back after the holiday s. Tennis Reminders Don t forget our Refresher Clinic on Tuesdays at 7pm and Men s open play night on Wednesday s at 6pm. We also have a social mixed doubles play on Monday nights at 6pm. Let us know if you would like to involve yourself with any one of these wonderful tennis opportunities. Directors Tip of the Month This is a question I get all the time How often should I string my racquet? It is an accepted industry standard that you should have your racquet strung as often as you play per week. In other words, for example, if you play twice per week you should string you racquet twice per year. Once per week, once per year etc This holds true no matter what type of string you use or what type of racquet you use. Another question I get is, How long should I keep my old racquet? While there is no exact answer or time frame, in general, every 2-3 years is appropriate. The frame loses constructional integrity due to play, weather conditions and restringing. Hopefully that will help when it is time to make those decisions with your equipment. January is usually a good time to regroup and prepare for spring league season. If there is something you would like to add to your tennis game, give us a call. We would be happy to help you with any and all of your tennis needs. From new equipment to a new stroke, we can help you reach your goals. Australian Open starts January 16 th. Take advantage of the first major to look at all the new products they have for 2017 Tennis on the Trent is the ONLY retail tennis shop located in your own backyard. We beat all internet pricing and we can customize what you need to give you the peak performance you want on the tennis court. We are certified members of the USPTA and the USRSA. Do not let just anyone service your equipment. We have the experience and knowledge to do it right. PAGE 6

The Al Mack Member-Guest Tournament Round Up We had the 2016 Mens Member-Guest Tournament Saturday, December 3rd. We had cool weather but beautiful tennis and plenty of sunshine. Four teams fought it out and in the end it was Al Mack and his partner who came through with the victory. The tennis was really well played by all teams. A heartfelt thank you to all the members and their guests for coming to our Club to enjoy some great tennis with friendship, fellowship and good food on a wonderful Saturday in December. Congratulations Al I know you will have some fun this year defending your title PAGE 7

8 Golf Course News AROUND THE COURSE WITH SUPERINTENDENT, TODD HOLT I would like to thank everyone that played or just dropped off food for our Superintendent's Revenge Tournament. You donated 512 meals to our local food bank and we more than doubled our donation from the spring event. THANK YOU We have been very busy this fall with normal cleanup, but also with several ongoing projects to improve your experience while playing at NBGCC. Some are quite visible and others are a bit behind the scenes. We are working on all of the landscape beds to improve presentation. Many high erosion/root areas are being addressed with either soil, sod, mulch and/or pine straw and will continue for all seasons. The benefits of this will improve not only the soil around many of our hardwoods, but create definition on the golf course for each hole. We are continue to update our golf course accessories like rakes, ball washers and flag sticks. Many have already been replaced, with the benches and signage next on the list. The first tee, 17 and 18 river view areas are being addressed for improvement in stages. The erosion on 18 held up to its first heavy rain a few weeks ago. The sodded area will blend in once we get back to growing conditions for the Bermuda grass. A nursery green was built and has grown in great. We are using it to repair any leftover weak areas for play. The chipping green was also redone with a greens mix cap, which will create a much better surface area to enjoy once completed.the next 60 days will be dedicated to our irrigation repair and upgrades for the rest of the greens complexes that we could not repair last spring. So now lets focus on what my first full season experience here at NBGCC means for this upcoming season on the greens. This was a very brutal year for bent grass greens all over the Carolinas from the mountains to the coast. We did have some decline at the end of the summer and some of our areas from last year struggled again. However, looking at the pictures from 10/15/2015 and 10/15/2016 we had estimated 75% less decline and we did not have to close any greens. Our interseeding and cultural practices held up very well on #12 this summer. I talked and met with other superintendents about what we did on this green and also got to compare it to, not only our other greens, but many in our region. At this time we have already done one interseeding on all of the greens but will be doing this again in our spring transition. I believe once we get all of the irrigation coverage improved, along with our cultivational practices, that you will see a greater resistance to historical summer stress decline. I also want to let you know that we are doing due diligence on when and what a golf course renovation would entail. My thoughts on this are that we can have a very good product for the membership to putt on, but in moving forward, a greens renovation makes sense. The reasons for this are numerous and are not all as simple as what you see from a players perspective. I have discussed the layering issue and irrigation head coverage in past communications and I am putting together a much more comprehensive outline plan for the Board and membership. So with those two aside, let s see how many of these other variables you may have on your list: Greensmix depth - a consistent mix allows similar air/water flow this creates similar management conditions for 18 holes. Sunlight - bentgrass needs morning sun for proper plant functions all turf needs sunlight. POA/Weed population - As greens age this becomes extremely problematic. We are doing many chemical trials for this and this helps in early stage management for future greens. Bermuda Encroachment - All our greens have this to a degree. Green size - A10% increase leads to more pin locations and stress reduction. Root competition - several greens have tree roots throughout the green. Cultivar - Many new varieties,t-1 is on chipping green. 962 is on nursery and interseeding. Budget Member Expectations Number of Rounds Played PAGE 8
