2 FROM THE MANAGER, PATRICK DILL In an ongoing effort to let the members know of the changes that the Board of Directors makes to our wonderful Club, I want to let the membership know that it was decided to add another handicap parking spot to help our more senior members access the Club. We would also like to ask members that do not need special parking please refrain from parking in the reserved spots. In addition, we just completed painting the exterior of the building and installed new windows on the front of the building. Both projects were required maintenance issues that we continually address. In addition to improvements to the building, we have added a new elliptical machine to the fitness center and removed an older outdated machine." I have to admit I cannot believe it is already October and getting close to the holidays. This year our children s Halloween party will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 starting at 5pm. We changed the format xlast year and will continue to make it the best party yet. Please look for more details in this newsletter. 3 Clubhouse News If you haven t noticed, our walls have recently been brightened by artwork from Fine Art at Baxter s. Every 2 months the membership and their guests get the opportunity to see the work of some of their newest artists, and if you like them, purchase them. Two of our newest artists that you are seeing this month are David Aiken (his work to the side) and Gale Smith. David is an avid boater and travels the water routes around the US and captures images of what he sees in a delightful impressionist style. The work we currently have at the gallery and the one above reflect his visit to the Charleston area. Gale Smith is a painter who has turned to the use of copper as her medium. She paints, cuts and weaves two abstract images together to create a dimensional piece of art. The soft gentle curves that she cuts into Pictured above is Making Ready, a 24 by 30 Acrylic painting by David Aiken, a Virginia artist. One of several hung at the Club by Fine Art at Baxter s. the copper allow her to form the piece into soothing and thought provoking structural designs. One of Gales works is in the hallway across from Patrick s office. If you are interested in one of the works, they are willing to let our members try it in their home or office. If you are redecorating and would like to include some new art in your plans they would be happy to help you at no charge. If you have some older pieces in your home and you want to refresh, they can also help you market your pieces. If any of these needs fits you, please give the Gallery ( ) or Jim Bisbee ( ) a call. 6 TENNIS REPORT, BILL JONES Tennis News Happy Fall We hope you are enjoying the cool fall weather now that we are into the holiday season. School has been back in for a month, so we are settling into the fresh clean air and no humidity. The fall schedule is always busy and as I am writing this we are preparing for the annual Fall USTA Kids L4 Tournament. We will update you next month on the outcome. As we go into winter, we hope you enjoy this newsletter and get out on the courts for some fall tennis with friends and families. Tennis Member of the Month This member is a true player, he works hard daily taking care of the health needs of many of us here in New Bern. He is a husband, father and grandfather who still has a passion for the game of tennis like no other. We love to see him playing whenever his busy schedule will allow. He is a no nonsense gentleman with a competitive fire that fuels his tennis and his life. Many affectionately refer to him as Doc do you know who this is? One more hint, as you play with him or you watch him play he will make sure the word GO is used with help and direction. We wanted to make sure Doc Ken Wilkins is recognized as our tennis member of the month. Doc you are an inspiration to us all, to be fit both mentally and physically and to play this game we all love. Keep up the great tennis play and we hope to be as on top of our game as you always are. Thanks Doc for all you do Directors Tip of the Month Daily we put quotes on the information board to inform and inspire you. One of my favorite quotes goes like this: Either I will find a way or I will create a way; but I will not create an excuse. How often do you come off the court, or worse even, on the court hear your opponent say, I just can t play in this type of weather or my racquet needs to be restrung, that s why I am playing so bad. One of the worst excuses, You are lucky I am making all these mistakes and giving you this match. It is too bad that most people don t own up to their own shortcomings. Some days you do not play well, but that is no reason to make excuses.play hard, play well and give your opponent the respect they deserve no matter how you play. Work harder on your game rather than blaming your opponent, yourself, your equipment or the weather. Don t be an excuse creator, be a problem solver and a difference maker Happy Birthday to Caroline Wilkins Thank you Caroline for celebrating your birthday at the NBGCC Tennis Shop PAGE 6

7 Tennis News League Season Update The ladies teams are doing well, with the 6.5 combo team fighting it out for the league championship and will come down to the last few matches to decide the outcome. We have some great news to report out new 2.5 team, captained by Ms. Jan Mizelle, The team has already wrapped up their league championship and will be headed to the state championships in November. CONGRATULATIONS to everyone on the team for being brave and putting yourselves out there to go win another yellow ball for the great tradition we have at NBGCC Tennis Court Update Your courts were supplementally resurfaced on September 26 th, to repair the run off from all the rain over the summer and early fall. The NBGCC Tennis Department took part in repairing and replacing surface material to make your courts the BEST in Eastern North Carolina We take a tremendous amount of pride in keeping these courts in the best possible condition over all other facilities in the area. Thank you for noticing.we appreciate it. We are in full swing with our After School Junior Program: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5 pm, 5-6 pm or 6-7 pm, based on age and ability. You can either have your kids in one day or both days. Call Hank or him at: hsumner@nbgcc.com to sign up today. The NBGCC Tennis Department would like to let you know about an exciting new game to the Club, called Pickleball. We are holding a demonstration on Friday, October 7 th at 9am. The local league coordinator for Pickleball will be on hand, with some volunteers, to demonstrate how to play. Pickleball is a fast paced mini version of tennis, played on a smaller court with paddles and wiffle type balls. The rules for Pickleball differ from tennis, so the demonstration will be helpful for anyone interested in the game. The demonstration will be held on the hard courts, which are already lined for Pickleball. No sign up is necessary and just come out ready to play if you are interested. We look forward to seeing you on the courts. PAGE 7
